In Europe, we buy and throw away billions and billions of plastic bottles every year. But what happens to these bottles once you put them in the recycling bin? Have you ever wondered where they end up?
Watch the full video and go behind the scenes at one of the biggest recycling plants in Europe!

Cool. It seems to work on coloured plastic, too, which is something that, according to the news this morning, we can't do in NZ. So they go to landfill. Whatever happened to Kiwi ingenuity?

It sorts coloured plastic with non-coloured plastic, but you can't just mix coloured plastic with non-coloured plastic (else you will get a mix of the two). You can recycle coloured plastic, it's exactly the same process, what should absolutely not be done is mixing different colored plastic. Also most industries need non-coloured plastic, and then they color it themselves.

What happens to the PET waste that ISN"T recycled? I'm extremely interested in their waste and what can be done with the "undesirable" materials. Thanks for your response. -Eric C

Ends up in landfill, gets exported to a less wealthy country for further sorting where much of it just gets burned. Exporting "recycled" plastic is also how plastic ends up in the ocean.

Good thing about PET is it’s the least toxic and more stable of the plastics type. That’s why they’re use for food container and into your Polyester clothes. It is the most recyclable plastics. As long they are collected and stored properly, they can easily recycled later with minimal degradation.

Interesting, most say plastic can only be down cycled. Only glass and paper/cardboard is recycled back to same new product, some metals also.

The First World can do closed loop recycling of plastic, but with some plastics more than others. Where it can be done and is done is because the First World has the brains, the investment capital, the advanced technology, and government under-writing. PET is foremost in plastic recycling, but beverage company and petrochemical company resistance to bottle-to-bottle recycling has had to be overcome. But there is beginning to be considerable volumes of post-consumer PET going into beverage container production.

Paperboard is usually downcycled too. As fibers break down, they become weaker, so a virgin fiber corrugated box might turn into a cereal box which might turn into newspaper, etc.

They also make fleece clothing from it - PET - I understand. I actually came on here to find out how they remove the bottle caps, along with the security band (that stays on the bottle when the cap is removed) but there was no mention of the process, if it takes place, at all. I did notice a lot of blue particles mixed in with the clear plastic at the end of the sorting and shredding process which I'm guessing are the caps. If that's the case, then I can only presume that the caps are also made of PET. If so, then it must be only a recent development, as the advice used to be to remove the caps before placing them in the recycling bin, whereas now they tell you to keep them on, and even have designed the caps to remain attached to the security band.

@@Dawkinsbulldog You also can't mix colors if you recycle plastic because then you will get a mix of color instand on the color that you wanted The blue flakes are crystalized PET, which happens when the PET is heated do a temperature that isn't high enough to make it melt (and apparently even when at the correct temperature? but if you check the pellets, they are all transparents, so i guess cooling them decrystalize them) I don't remember exactly how they do it, but if i remember correctly it has to do with chemicals. But yeah, they do ahve to remove the caps one way or another, not only because of colors, but also because it's not the same plastic. I think it's PP, but i'm not 100% sure. And mixing differents plastics is even worse than mixing colors

They chopped down trees to burn in their homes for heat. Ceilings were mayby 2 m (6 ft) high to conserve heat. Took an hour to ride the buggy into town via horse drawn carriage. Things are different and we like our bottles. They're cheap, easy to make and don't break during transport to your store. The list goes on...
