Emily Berry Well sadly a movie about talking food won the awards, and this movie (Kubo and the two strings) costed $60 million to make while it only earned $68 million. That's only a profit of 8 million dollars! It's time to lose our faith in humanity yet again.

I really hate those who hate cgi. what is wrong it. I really love stop motion too, but that is no excuse to dis on cgi. cgi has the same amount of skills and creativity too. especially some of many the cgi stories on youtube, that express far more dark, deep and yet happy mixed emotions than any hand drawn animation, which mainly tends to copy alot from the 16th century and make them more babyish.

I felt that way when watching Coraline and Corpse Bride (Also by LAIKA Entertainment, LLC.) I felt like watching CGI Because it felt so natural and seamless, and also the textures were different than Plasticine and the design was more realistic, then years after I find out it was stop motion and I was really surprised! and also to find that the texture was different because it was made out of silicone. But yes, even the Web of "the other mom" wasn't CGI

This is an insane amount of work. I would like to know why the filmmakers didn't go for totally digital animation but exactly replicate the style. Surely digital has to be easier, faster more cost efficient or is it about keeping a tradition. Amazing film anyway. Great work. Fascinating to watch. The artists are very talented.

I would not say digital is "easier." It is still a lot of work. However, I would agree that animating in stop motion is a lot of labor and leaves very little room for screwing up. It is basically animating straight ahead so a lot of planning has to be done. There is no "Undo button." Laika is a studio that cares very much for quality and are like the modern Jim Henson studio.They have built a brand for themselves, just like Dreamworks and Disney has with their style and technique. There are some things that can be done with stop motion that can not be done in digital and vice versa. I truly admire this studio because they are not doing this for the money, they are doing this for the story and the craft.
@carlotta4th
@carlotta4th 7 жыл бұрын
Part of it is just a love for the craft. If you like making models, then sitting at a computer making 3D models instead wouldn't be as rewarding. But I'm sure another part of it is also just that you CAN'T capture this sort of feeling with computers. The closest they've gotten was "Flushed Away" (a CGI rendered film made to look like traditional stop motion animation). And it's a good film with parts of it that get very VERY close to feeling like stop motion--but still not quite the same. A little too clean, perhaps. Maybe the computer lighting gives it away, maybe the fluidity of the animation or scale of detail... I'm not sure what it is. It's a very good imitation but it just doesn't have the same textural feel as a Coraline or Kubo. There's some sort of detail present in the physical animation that computer models can't imitate. Simply put: It's an aesthetic choice. =)

One word: passion. Sure, stop motions expensive. Sure, it's long and difficult and tiring. Sure, it may not be as polished. But the love of the art form is what keeps laika going with these projects. And just the dedication and love is enough to make it all worth it. I have all my hats off to laika.

I find kinda ironic how the main characters of the Laika movies(with the exception of Paranorman) are voiced by child actors who are somehow connected,I mean we had Dakota Fanning voicing the main character in Coraline and her sister Elle voiced the love interest of the main character in Boxtrolls,and then we had Isaac Hempstead-Wright as the main character in Boxtrolls and Art Parkinson as Kubo in Kubo in the two strings,and for a weird irony both of them were in Games of Thrones as the younger Stark brothers.

radtemmie Well most people don't use reviews to decide the movie they are going to see, but honestly you don't need to read any reviews to see that this movie looks fantastic and unique while something like suicide squad looks average and stupid, but oh well.

This is really impressive. I'm Japanese. I went to theater and watched KUBO today. I found a lot of homage to Japanese (old) culture and tradition. The trailer for Japan says that this movie is made with the highest technique in the world, but I felt the strongest PASSION !!!! I knew that this is stop-motion before I watched actually. But I doubted when the movie started. It looked like 3D CG animation. So just now I researched video about KUBO on KZfaq, came here and watched this. Then I REALLY realized this is a stop-motion actually ! So long time, So many stuffs, So many ideas to make something happen in reality, to express their passion !! I hope many Japanese people to watch this and like it ! And I believe it !

What a mind-blowing wonder! There was so much concentration in those workers' faces, so determined to get every last detail of each model right. They didn't even take notice of the cameras recording them work, also highly impressive. When the footage was in fast pace, to think of how the camera people had to sit there for hours while the staff spent just as long animating less than 1 second of the film. It breaks my heart that this film bombed at the box office! Please don't tell me that most people think stop-motion is old school. So many stop-motion movies throughout history have been much more complex and adult than most CGI movies we get today. Laika and Aardman are full of geniuses and I DO NOT want to see either of them fail in the future. I'll make sure to spread the word to my friends about future stop-motion movies.

This movie was one of the most visually stunning pieces of animation I've EVER seen. And the amount of handcrafted work just makes it even more impressive. Voice acting was on point. Story, well told, it may have not been mindblowing in terms of plot but it was definitely good and not too heavily cliché filled as I expected coming into it. Overall this move was amazing, huge props to every individual who was apart of its production process.
