Hello Model Railroaders!
Tonight, on the Second Section Podcast Mike and I are going to talk about what is the deal with all the craze about the shelf layout??? Can we build the big sprawling basement empire by applying the principles of the shelf layout? We think you’ll be surprised with our answer.
We will also dive into a new Shortline of the Show and dive into our summer schedule!!!

I didn't know what I was doing when I started and probably bit off more than I can chew - Andy Right there with you. Exactly the same thing, the ideas far exceed my abilities.

Looks like a good plan for your layout, Andy, you've got a great amount done and it's looking good. You did a fantastic job on your 🎨 painted backdrop. C&NW 💯

If you do not know Seth Neumann from MRCS, you should definitely get him on your show. He is a really great guy and very helpful in the community. I got the MP5's where the Cobalt DigitaliP would not fit. The MP4 is a nice improvement with the screw terminals.

Do the caboose in Farlin Terminal. Lots of short lines use them as mow platforms or even mobile tool storage. You could even do a patched out Soo scheme!

Now there is an interesting concept...a patched out Soo!

The MP switch machine is actually produced by MTB in the Czech Republic and is part of a series of switch machines. Some have fewer terminals, some more, there are even versions that contain a DCC accessory decoder. The MP1 is even cheaper but contains the same mechanism. You should try servos, they are extremely cheap and can be easily controlled. They are controlled by 255 angle steps, so you can digitally set both throw limits for the switch, meaning you only have to install them roughly in the right place, and then you can correct everything from software. I use DCC decoders with them that I can set up in about a minute by programming 3 CVs. I only have to double-sided tape them to my foam, no need for screws or harnesses. I use S3003 knock-off servos, about the same size as an MP4, and at a particularly tight spot I used an SW90, that's about the size of a playing die, just a little oblong.

MTB can also be interesting because they produce SW1200 switchers in TT:120 scale.

The Alaska and the UP have the Alaska Car Ferry from Seattle to Alaska. My South Olympic Branch Update #87 has some video of that.

There was a post a few weeks ago in one of the "S" groups that there will be three more releases for S. One this year, and two more next year. Beyond that, they are very uncertain of their future commitments due to the poor showing of their last two releases. I believe they are also not doing anything with track or new locomotives. As far as MTH, they did a SW9 but it was limited. You will run across their F units more than any switcher they did.

At 1:09 Mike says “the hobby’s gotten expensive.” I wish people would stop. It costs money, to be sure, but there are ways to counter that. I have a friend whose total bench work investment is three 4’-long modules. Sure he’s got trains. And more than enough of those (I won’t tell his wife), but it’s not ridiculous. So I have to ask - what’s a cheap hobby? I don’t think there is one.

I love this conversation. Thanks for taking it on! Ive pondered this extensively myself and even went as far as making a video on the subject myself. (See below if youre interested) To me it really just comes down to not necessarily large or small, but rather "model within your means"... Model whay you jave space for, model ehat you have money for, and model whay you have time for. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qc9zZMKF0t-qYWw.htmlsi=tcpAqVfyP6Y1T1Hs
