The time has finally come - Buckeye Week.
When I first learned about football, I didn't know who my local teams were. So I took a liking to the St Louis Rams for Pro Football, and the Florida Gators for college ball. It didn't take me long to realize that Cleveland and Columbus were major Ohio cities which housed the local mainstream football markets. I'd see Browns and Bengals jerseys at school, and the occasional Buckeye jersey. I saw them in the stores too, and I guess my love for the sport made me want to get some jerseys of my own - Northeast Ohio being my local market area, the natural options were the Browns and Buckeyes.
My first football jersey was actually my dad's - he had an oversized, white Washington Redskins jersey - I dont quite remember whose name was on it. Soon after, I had a Packers jersey that fit me well enough to wear to school - I just liked how it looked, and it didn't matter that I never watched the Packers because I just loved football. But once I had an opportunity, I finally got my hands on a Browns jersey and eventually a few Buckeye jerseys too. That's the moment in my life that solidified my allegiance to my local sports teams - I'm a Die Hard Massillon Tiger, Die Hard Ohio State Buckeye fan, and a Die Hard Cleveland Browns fan. From that moment, til my heart stops beating.
Note: If you noticed the wording, I am not a Massillon Tigers fan, I am a Massillon Tiger. I was born there, received one of the traditional Tiger footballs on my day of birth, and I played in a Massillon uniform for 4 seasons, from Ages 11-14. I wish I'd kept at it - you know what they say, be careful what you wish for. I always wonder what legacy I may have had if I let my love for the city, and my love for the sport drive my actions, but that's hard for a kid to remember in the heat of the moment. In any case, T-I-G, and Beat-Beat McKinley.
In those early days, I made sure to never miss a game. When you're so young, it's easy to watch a Buckeye game from start to finish, feeling like you don't know what's going to happen, so I absorbed hours of Troy Smith, Tyrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, watched some of my own peers go on to cement amazing careers in Buckeye Uniforms (Devin Smith & Gareon Conley). These days I must admit, I either don't have the time to watch them, or I may not even have the interest. I can usually tell how things are going to go, when the Bucks play against teams like Rutgers, Miami of Ohio, Akron Zips, Kent State, etc. So most of the time, I'm only tuning in when it "matters" but in reality, we all Buckeye fans are so blessed to have such a talented team year after year, and most of the time our season doesn't end unless it's in the College Football Playoff (CFP).
If you watch the entire video, you'll get to see a throttling. I can't tell you who does the throttling. But let's just say, I love the Buckeyes no matter what.
O-H.
