My big takeaways from the audiobook version Sargon read are: - "Do nothing that is of no value." This is easy to apply to daily life, without extrapolation. Spend your time on something useful, however small. For instance, if you believe it would be of no value to complain about the hardship of life, or that it would be of no value to laze about all day smoking weed, then do not do it. Don't "do it and then feel bad about yourself later." Just do something useful instead. - Keep your mind focused on what you want to do. This is incredibly important. You may have heard of self-help books or meditation techniques about "visualization." You may have heard about how important it is that soldiers have a "fighting spirit." This is all the same thing. If your mind is on cutting your opponent, your body will subconsciously react in ways that facilitate that. That means you have to focus on it intently, have no other aim or goal. You have the same thing in rock climbing. If you become afraid, you will lose your footing as surely as if a gust of wind blew you off balance. That's not mumbo-jumbo, it's a real thing. Being of a singular, focused mind gives you strength in pursuing what you're focused on. It also makes you weak at what you're not focused on. So do what Musashi says, and stand up straight, and focus on principles that apply to all situations. - You must practice, constantly, if you want to achieve understanding. It is not going to come quickly, but it will come.

In The early 1980s I started studying shoto kan as a freshman in High school. I never read through this book completely. many years later I finally went through the whole book. At that time I realized how much we was talked directly from this book. It Make me realize that I am the person that I am today. Now that i'm in my 50s My body does not move like it used to. But I still work out when I can. Now I have taken a new art. I am studying Blacksmithing. Now I take this book and apply it to my art. If you read this book read it with a open mind and Apply it to everything.

I 100% agree. The most insightful book on life for people that are willing to risk their life and everything else for something bigger. To your work: where are you learning blacksmithing? Are you an apprentice or are there classes where they teach this? I'm in europe and sadly there aren't many traditional works left.

It’s fascinating and intriguing how everything you see on television was once reality. As the century ages and destiny plays out the relationship of unity falls apart along with creativity. Every perception you see is real, all the ancient artifacts and intuition has far left the paragon unfortunately, who else is thinking in such precedent for there future. There’s no accountability, therefore there’s no progress just arrogancy and naïve people. No one just shuts the fuck up listens in hope to become better.

Nice to have access to this. I listen, while I slowly remind myself that, once upon a time, I depended upon the resources of my body. Now I must depend upon my mind, instead, for my body is an old, worn, horse, whereas my mind is at last a soaring dragon . . . or a blustering turkey. In either case, this is a good lecture to listen to when warming up.

+frozenbinarystudio How exactly did it change your life? Not being sarcastic, just interested as to how one implements eastern warrior philosophy into everyday life and still prospers in modern society.
@frozenbinarystudio
@frozenbinarystudio 8 жыл бұрын
TheLordboki I simply adapted the meanings into a more modern setting. What I learned is that while Musashi was not a man of means he became one of the most revered people in his countries history. During his lifetime. He did so by studying hard, not taking shortcuts, and even doing things that no other person would do. Those that scoffed at him, he challenged, only to defeat them soundly and mercilessly. He taught me to not give up on what you want if it can be done. Not to listen to those who will bring you down without first having the experience to back it up. To tackle your detractors with an aggression and strategy that will make them beg you to stop. Then crush them in the most brutally effective way you can, to ensure they are unable to retaliate. This is how I changed my life for the better.
@frozenbinarystudio
@frozenbinarystudio 8 жыл бұрын
TheLordboki I have also used the book of 5 rings as a programming manual by taking its lessons and abstracting them. It's why I don't get so upset at my computer for not compiling my code. I see that as a "crushing the heart" tactic, as machines are heartless foes and I am the one with the potential for emotions to be a weakness.

I feel like there are a lot historical texts that have a big reputation based simply on the fact that they are historical. There are others that gain esteem due to one reason or another. The Book of Five Rings is just pure truth (taken in with a bit of context). It's one of the greatest pieces of actual "ancient wisdom" that we have especially in regards to combat and strategy, I find it to be many times more wise than The Art of War, although The Art of War has a cooler title. Just a bit of an anecdote, I was a coach at Straight Blast Gym (MMA gym). I had read this book when I was in my teens, and read it again when I was in my late 20's. Something about reading it again made a lot of my techniques "click", combined of course with years of training, mindfulness and study. There are often unseen... "things" that limit our performance, with the void scroll fresh in my mind I had a sort of breakthrough. Sounds silly, but I firmly stand behind this book.

Yes - its more of a manual for application but presented with generic strategies/theories and concepts. When you reflect on your own experiences and use it - well I lost my chain of thought but yeah its actually practical. Great for all strategy especially for adversarial situations where its not so co-operative or horizontal.

I'm 37, this is my first time hearing this book, and I already know it... I've learned these lessons through a long hard life... although it is a very important thing to know and can help with every aspect of your life, I've found it latley to be more of a curse.... I cannot accept what I see is coming because I can't assure it.... then it happens, some say I manifested it, some say I have psychic sight, they are both wrong, I've simply mastered strategy and can see what ppls choices are from the very min I see the situation that is at hand, if I could only find a way to prepare and defend against these things I know to be true but can't be assured until it's to late....

How would you run out of ink, it's just carbon from burnt wood finely ground and mixed with water or some other form of suspension.

So much wisdom, I'm going to soon order a official printed Japanese copy to master the keys in it's words. There is real samurai spirit in those origins scrolls that they were written on.

But this is a great read that has a easy narrative in voice. Though it sounds more documented than announced in martial arts tone it was written in yet it is still a great works of literature from a time of history that is long gone. Good job and nice translation, I'll be keeping in tuned. See you around.

My greatest belongings are my books...five rings, art of war,art of peace, ki:a road anyone can travel, zen and japanese culture, the sword of no sword.......my world has been diluted. people think of UFC as having real martial arts that are superior to anything before.

I personally believe the world shifts from peace to war naturally and those "strategiests" born in times of peace are bread for peaceful competition while those in times of war risk and pay the ultimate price for true skill and knowledge in their artform.
