The big question of whether to invest in formal photography education or not. Do you self-teach or be taught? The pros and cons of each from my viewpoint.
Wanna be taught by ME?

I believe the true learning being a photographer is through experience. But studying in a Photography school gives you more opportunity to know people in Photography Industry.

I've been to school twice, it's a waste of money. At least for creative fields, If you have the time, you can just sponge up cheap online courses/youtube, make friends with people who have more experience than you, and just do lots of trial and error. You can get really decent at something by spending a very small sum of money and a lot of your time practicing. I find it's also good to get some kind of teacher or coach just for a month or two to start off, because it gives you a proper base to build off of. Not just photography, but any creative field. After personally learning so many skills for myself, the creative thinking just kind of translates over... The technical quality in whatever field it is will just build over time and refine your ideas. But it's the ideas themselves that make work good. School will simply save you time with the technicals, maybe a year or two of head scratching ( Could cost you tens of thousands of dollars ). Just doing something all the time is what's going to make you good ( Costs no dollars only time ).

I agree with this 110% Having just picked up photography out of the blue and learned from only using KZfaq it's super easy and fun. Took me I'd say a month to learn about the exposure triangle and the other stuff as well. Sure, you can learn in school properly but why waste the money when you can learn for free? Plenty of pros out in about on KZfaq teaching you basic stuff like Luke!

Thank you. I’m just now deciding to pursue photography professionally even though I’ve never had “professional” training/education and was wondering should I go to photography school; you just made it plain and simple. I’ve already learned so much from KZfaq and reading articles and figure the best teaching will be to start learning/using a camera. Thanks for the inspiring words; I plan to continue your videos on the topic. 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

In the arts, I've had a hard time finding a good teacher in school. I always have to search to find someone that I connect with as a teacher. While the teachers are great artists, they aren't great teachers. I always felt I could go back to them and review what they taught after I found a good teacher that could get through to me in the beginning. A lot of what you've said about photography school and lighting went along with my intuition about photography before I ever came across your videos.

Thanks for showing this - I like your viewpoint - and I just wish to add - that (I believe) the other reason why formal training would be important for other professions, e.g. engineers, science, teaching, law, etc - is because those professions have a sense of responsibility attached - towards other people. E.g. If you cook something and they get sick - you are responsible for the customer, or an engineer with building a project - others need your services. But with art - there is freedom - and it's a special area - where people do not feel responsibility placed on you that relates to a person's survival, well-being or career, but truly are attracted to your area of creativity. I think that's one of the defining factors in the artistic realm - only exception would be if you wish to collaborate art with education or with another kind of service - e.g. cooking - where you artistically show something nice, but also need to make sure it is safe to eat. But the practice of the aesthetic - alone, is one of freedom and exploration, imagination and reaction. Just a thought.

Thanks for a great video. I tend to agree for the most part with you. However there is one scenario (which I have encountered first hand) that I missed in your video. That is the reverse scenario. You mentioned (rightfully so) that going to school to master the technical aspects is great, provided it will not fence or limit your creativity. But the reverse happened to me, I did photography classes purely out of interest with a pair of tech glasses on. While going thru the course I discovered an unknown territory: creativity. By learning the technical side, me creative side opened up and is now leading (ps and that happened at age 60)

Either you are an artist or you are not. Musicians, painters, actors, dancers, sculptors, etc.. When asked where his ideas came from my friend who is an artist told me he saw the drawings on the wall when he was standing in his crib.Another friend told me he sees and hears the music in his head long before he composes.

When you have a certain picture in your mind, then you will need the technical know how to let it come to life. Or you should convey your idea to others to make it happen!

To school or not to school... There is no one simple answer! Liberal Arts Higher Ed. studies are for self-discovery & personal development; it's about using the classics of human history, thought, & civilization as a starting point & mirror to understand oneself & one's place in the time-space continuum while socializing with folks from various backgrounds & life experience. A higher ed. science & engineering degree aims to teach critical thinking & the scientific method for systematic examination & research for progress & discovery. A business degree teaches fundamentals of business administration to leverage systems for scaling. Technical college is for skill development; a kind of shortcut for mastery of the fundamentals instead of wasting time with endless trial & error. All that said, the creative act is ultimately quite personal.

There's KZfaq i probably cant afford photography class. There's vlog like yours can teach us a lot. U r right ART is imaginations of individual, i need to find that individuality in me, i have no ART talent, i see all arts as one beautiful concept, if i make any sense. Ehheheh. Great advice, i probably need to save that money for retirement instead.

Why do I watch you rather than others? You in the main do not start your videos with “Hey guys wasup” and you manage to limit dude and bro to a manageable minimum. LOL Education can accelerate the learning process. If you want to be successful in photography, you must know your equipment inside out, operating it should be second nature. Do not become a slave to your equipment, it is just a tool. Stop buying new shit that you have to become familiar with, when you can stick with what you know. Pray that you have the X factor Luke is speaking of. If you want to do a photography course, do it with someone who can help you find your X factor. Without that you will aways struggle as a photographer.
