@wtnomad they didn't just sample, most Goa hippies were junkies and later cocaine addicts but the worst part is they financed the utopia by drug smuggling. The results of that were devastating, on one hand gullible people working as mules ending up in 3rd world dungeons and on the other dwindling supplies of heroin and cash made people even more selfish than they might have been if they had stayed at home. How did you think they were financing the utopia, some lived there for years, it's not like you can live on the beach in a foreign country getting high making chai lattes on the beach for people. It was a utopia, wasn't sustainable, the entire hippy thing wasn't, someone always has to foot the bill.

@wtnomad I was never there but I read Cleo Odzer's book, Odzer was one of the central figures in Anjuna and in her book she describes in considerable detail the descent of the community into first heroin and then also cocaine addiction. I can agree that weed is pretty much harmless and that most hippies weren't junkies, but based on Odzer's book, and I've never heard anyone disputing her claims, the "inner circle" of Anjuna hippies financed their utopian lifestyle with drug smuggling from the get go. I guess they broke the don't get high on your own supply rule.
