they made this song first and shot the music video with a phone because of the pandemic and wanted to make a funny video with the dance and costumes. then they changed the whole song because of ESC rules and turned it into an even more badass version and still used these costumes as a tribute in the official music video, they are so wholesome, clever, talented, amazing. Pavlenko noted, that the band struggled to cut the original version of the song to three minutes. So, rather than shortening it, they decided to come up with a "sequel". Pavlenko explained that the original Shum was not written with Eurovision in mind and was intended for their concert tour after the cancelled Eurovision 2020. The purpose of the original track was to recreate the folk ritual at live gigs with their audience. The new version of the track, however, was "adapted" for Eurovision and is based on vesnianka folk songs. So, This will be a very nerdy comment, please feel free to ignore it as it’s a rant from an amateur producer. I originally became a fan of the Eurovision edition of the song, I have it pumping in my ears every time I do cardio, it has replaced the Illennium Hardstyle remix of “Don’t let me down”. It got me through a full playthrough of Hades 1, on loop in my speakers while i decimated wretched souls in the underworld. BUT BOY OH BOY OH MY FREAKING BOY This is like… The Eurovision song went on its villain/antihero arc. Incessant drums, a much moodier atmosphere, this is the difference between the normal version of Cyberpunk 2077 and the Cynosure facility mission. The droning chords and the pulsating bassline create a hellish soundstage, perfectly complemented with the sine bleep, recalling a beating ECG, and the sneaky substitution of the “standard” kickdrum (Which I have the tiny suspicion that it’s not _actually_ there, the gain was set to -99 and used just as a sidechain trigger compressing all the track, but unless the producers themselves answer this comment, we will never know) for the sound of a heartbeat is donwright TERRIFYING. And then there’s the thing that kills me: the freaking flute. God only knows how much of a sucker I am for flute parts if they are done the right way, and that flute WAS. ASTONISHING. And then, the vocals. THOSE VOCALS. Катерина shot it out of the freaking park. The straight fact that they decided to apply such minimal processing to her voice is a testament to how much of a _great_ singer she is. I love the double-tracking of her vocals, á la Sia, even though I think it was not actual double tracking but either Neutron Chorus or the AVOX suite working its magic, it felt a little too “perfect” to be human. But alas, I might be wrong, and she might be a robot, we will never know. As far as I’m concerned with the video, it was very good, very evocative and the vibes were there, buuuuut, I still think the Eurovision team did a better job (naturally, they have a much larger budget, it was clear that their clip was going to be cooler). I am not sorry, the Černobyl' Mad max / S.T.A.L.K.E.R. rave party was objectively cooler. Overall, I think that both versions get an average vote of 9/10. Very, VERY good songs.
