12 Great Footballers Who Became Awful Managers
Who better to start with than Wayne Rooney? Surely, you would agree that he had a great playing career. But sadly, we can't say the same about his coaching career. Just recently, he got sacked by Birmingham City after winning just 2 out of his 15 games in charge.
The same could also be said about Alan Shearer. He holds the record for the highest goalscorer in Premier League history, and many of those goals came for Newcastle.
Thierry Henry is also enjoying his time as a pundit but didn't really enjoy his time as a manager. Now, just so we're clear, he had a decent spell with the Belgian national team as their assistant coach, but it went downhill from there.
As a pundit, Gary Neville isn't scared of tearing into players and coaches. But one thing's for sure, he's a pretty bad coach himself. While he was an assistant coach with the English national team, they got knocked out in the group stages of the 2014 World Cup.
Another person who got embarrassed was Diego Maradona. If it weren't for Messi, he would have easily been the greatest Argentinian player of all time.

I wouldn't say that Gerrard is bad, just not trained enough I mean he just needs a bit more training and he can maybe go back to the prem for a bottom 10 team

It is Aston Villa that painted him black. He was good at Liverpool U19, great in Scotland with Rangers and over performing in Saudi Arabia according to the standard of his team.

It’s funny how this mostly the case with English managers. Spains golden generation are doing great in management, you see what Xabi Alonso is doing in Germany. Xavi won Barcelona la liga last season

@@Leo-xs1niThey are still in transition let's not forget that, with a huge list of injuries and a huge debt, he still managed to win the league last season, if he has a proper backing and Barca get out of financial mess he can be great he has already shown that

Your chronology for Henry is just wrong. He did poorly in the MLS and Monaco, but has done remarkably with France U21 and Belgium (assistant manager).

I think all this proves is the skills of being a manager aren't the same as those for being a good player.... Just look at SAF fair to say he was a pretty average player... but Clough was a great player and manager and there are some people that were never players Arrigo Sacchi, Roy Hodgson, Gerard Houllier to name three. I don't think you can't be a great manager if you have been a great player, but I'm not sure how much help it is either.

Gary Neville was never a great footballer either....he was an above average right back who played for a world class United.Only one so many caps for England as Rob Jones' career was cut short because of injury.
