On February 26, 2016, at 3:04 pm, Sheriff’s Helicopter Henry 1 was dispatched to Goat Rock Beach along with deputies from the Guerneville Substation and Fire personnel from Bodega Bay Fire, CALFIRE and Monte Rio Fire, to assist a State Parks lifeguards with a rescue of several persons who had been swept out into the rough surf and now were in distress. It was later determined that several family members visiting Goat Rock Beach were walking along the beach’s edge when a large wave struck the family members causing them to be swept out into the rough surf. Another family member entered the water to render aid and all parties became distressed in the rough condition of the surf. The State Parks lifeguard entered the surf, swam and contacted the distressed family members and stabilized the situation until Henry 1 arrived on scene. One of the family members was able to swim out of the rough surf and return back shore without assistance. The Henry 1 crew landed on shore and reconfigured the helicopter for a 100’ long-line rescue. They attached a 100’ rescue rope to the bottom of the helicopter. The pilot flew the crew member on the end of the rope, out to lifeguard and the distress family members in the surf. The family members and the lifeguard were secured in the “horse-collar” rescue device and the pilot flew the rescuer and the family members back to shore. The family members were turned over, exhausted, to State Parks and Fire Department personnel for medical transport to local hospitals. The State Parks lifeguard was flown by Henry 1 to a Santa Rosa hospital for follow-up medical treatment as a precaution. The Henry 1 crew consists of a pilot, deputy sheriff/EMT and a paramedic, all trained to perform long line rescues in the ocean, on cliffs and other remote areas located along the North Coast. Prepared by Lieutenant Al Vernon, Watch Commander

Kate, excellent effort on the video! It's understandable why news outlets as well as search and rescue operations want this coverage. You have done a great job, thank you.

Whoa, that's terrifying. I've been on part of that beach - it was where it really hit home that you *never* turn your back on the ocean. And the waves when I was there were were only about 10-20 feet high! Folks just don't know, or don't understand how dangerous it can be. Really glad they got them out of the water so fast!

Hi there, the lifeguard in the water was a California State Lifeguard. May California State Parks post this video to State social media accounts and other media outlets? Thank you.

+California State Lifeguards Please thank him, without his actions there would be a few drownings yesterday. Yes, please share, I hope it can be a good educational tool. I can also provide a Dropbox link with the raw unedited footage, which was also requested from the helicopter pilot. Just provide an email address to send it to.

I’ve been in a tight spot here before but you have to know how to swim in that. A lot easier with a board but if your not experienced thanks stay out the water. It took me a few years before I surfed comfortable there.

Amanda, I am very happy that you are all safe. When I walked to the beach the kids were behind me.The boys had on swim trunks with towels, the blond girl had a beach bucket. She said, "I don't think I want to go in the water anymore," when she saw the big waves. I turned to her and the teen boy and said, "there is a high surf advisory, it would be extremely dangerous to go in the water." I got the sense that that is what they had intended to do. I didn't see you get swept in but heard you were walking into the surf? Anyway, I didn't intend to insult you if it wasn't warranted by saying "how stupid" in the video, but as soon as I heard those sirens, I knew it was going to be your group they were coming for. Again, just glad everyone made it out alive, that is the important thing!

+Yo Momma I'm glad you are safe. But it's not fair to put down Kate for simply commenting off the cuff during an unfolding situation. She didn't have all the info about you were or weren't and it was a developing situation. Her mistake of misidentifying your identity is nothing compared to the mistake of not respecting the dangers of the pacific ocean.

+Robert Bowles How do you know their intentions, are you a member of the family? Believe me, at this point I wish I was never there. However, these are the facts as I knew them at the time of this video: the family parked next to my car and I walked ahead of them to the beach. From the parking lot, you can't see the surf. The 2 little girls were talking about how excited they were to get in the water. Then, when they saw the waves, one said," I don't think I want to go in anymore." Several of them had on swim suits and towels and they appeared to think they were going swimming. I said to 2 of the kids, " there is a high surf advisory, it would be extremely dangerous to go swimming." Then, I walked down to the mouth of the River. I came back when I heard the sirens, knowing it would be for this family. And sure enough, there they were bobbing 100 yards offshore. While videotaping the rescue, I made an off-the-cuff comment about telling them not to go swimming and how it was "so stupid" that this happening. I emailed a few pictures to my local newspaper and they called me and encouraged me to post the video. Then ABC and Fox News and even the pilot of the helicopter contacted me to use the video footage. Then, the family began attacking me here in online comments. I am done trying to argue about it with the family. I'll just delete the entire video. But I am hearing similar accounts of how reckless they were from other witnesses like this one on the Press Democrat: Lucas Michael • "I was there when it happened and me and my brother saved one of those people getting swept back into the ocean. The lifeguard really saved both the mother and the girls life. Th kids were way too close to the water and when I saw a big wave crash onto the beach I looked over at those kids and saw them all fall to their feet and got dragged into the brutal waves. Me and my brother tried for 10/15 minutes to grab the kids from the waves while risking our own lives. My brother went in way too far to try to grab the girl and almost saw him get swept away with her. Scariest experience I have ever been a part of and I think the way that first life guard went into save the little girls life was the most heroic thing I hav ever seen but I am also mad me and my brother put our lives on the line to save these people because their mother let them get way too close. 5 minutes before they got swept away we made a comment by saying they were too close and within minutes we were trying to save their lives." Instead of being grateful they are alive, they have spent all day online attacking people.

For next time: Don't stand on wet sand at that beach. Wet sand means waves have been coming up that far, really recently. And with a high surf advisory, even more important to stay up on the dry sand. I saw the family photo in the newspaper, with you all standing ankle deep in the wet sand. How quickly can you turn and run uphill in sand? How quickly can you judge how big that next wave is, how fast or far it's going to come up after you? The big warning signs in the parking lot say this is one of the most dangerous beaches on the California coast, and shows a diagram of the beach and how it drops away quickly. Maybe you didn't see the sign, or haven't been to the beach before. It's not Clear Lake, it's the ocean. I will choose to believe that the family put itself at risk out of ignorance, not stupidity. They are not the same thing. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I will presume they had never been to a beach before, did not see the warning signs, and had no idea there was a high surf advisory, and truly had no idea that Goat Rock beach is notoriously dangerous. If those things are true, it doesn't mean they are stupid. Just ignorant. On the other hand, if you saw the signs and didn't read them, or read them and ignored them, Reminds me of the story a few years back where some young people waded out into the water at the top of that waterfall in Yosemite, with all kinds of signs strictly forbidding that. At least one of them slipped and fell off the waterfall. Not a good outcome. And especially not worth it, for a photo op. Go forward, be safe, be grateful. And to the members of the family who are cussing and using foul language to attack folks who are making comments about your ignorant behavior on the beach, the bad language just makes you look even more foolish and defensive. Take a breath, be grateful, and walk away from the keyboard.

+elleretnahc, great remarks. Thanks for pointing out the difference between ignorant (and uneducated) and stupidity. I would like to add that my husband and I used to spend a great deal of time at Goat Rock in the past but one day last Summer we witnessed three incidents that were so ridiculous that I decided never to go back as my heart couldn't take it anymore. In a nutshell, one mom fell asleep in the sand leaving her 2 kids to play in the water (lifeguard came after about half an hour and educated the mom), a young mom left her 18 month old in the white foam alone to grab her backpack, about 5 feet away, that was floating away and a family with 4 kids let their kids race down to the water's edge, climb onto a WET rock (meaning a wave had recently crashed over it) before the parents made it out of the parking lot. Again, luckily, a lifeguard came and told the kids to get off. This all occurred in one day with many other lesser instances (one being an adult woman knocked over in the surf and she couldn't get up initially while her elderly husband stood by unable to help her). Who needs it. We no longer visit Goat Rock but choose other, safer spots on the coast to wave watch.

Sounds like Goat Rock is only for certain people. Become ocean savvy. Learn how to be safe in and around the sea. Every place and every beach is different. Conditions vary at the same beach. Local authorities should post detailed information like the first poster on this section did for each beach, with pictures and videos. Offer online tests people can take. People can learn. A few points: Rogue waves: A larger wave suddenly comes along. One reason to keep distance from you and the ocean. Beaches can be like neighborhoods, some are safer than others. Some are safer during certain seasons.

+Lisa Wolfe... So you've never been to the ocean... It's not a pool, there is not an edge of water. Standing on dry sand is not safe but standing ankle deep in wet sand with children looking at 15 foot waves is almost criminal.

I'm always shocked when people show up to Marin/Sonoma area beaches and go in the water without a full body suit. The water is ice cold year around and unforgiving without any surf. I can't imagine what they were thinking to attempt this with the current conditions.

People need to read the signs and understand the risk of just wading ankle-deep at any steep beach with a very big shorebreak wave. It's not a matter of not meaning to go for a swim: just don't stick your legs in the water because you will get swept by the outgoing water. This is especially true for children. Every year parents let kids play knee-deep in dangerous shorebreaks where these kids get dragged into the impact zone and drown, some of them never to be recovered, as happened this winter in Santa Cruz with a 12-year-old boy. There needs to be a better understanding from the uneducated beach-going throngs of exactly what the danger is. Always keep and eye on your kids, don't let them play in shallow water when the beach is steep and the shore break waves are high - Goat Rock is probably one of the most dangerous of these types of beaches. If the above is not clear, just watch this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5Z4hM2UstfYqoU.html

Hey! Since this video still gets comments and views every so often, i'd like to say, we never spoke to kate. I am the little girl she claimed to have spoken to and it did not happen. And to those who feel the need to call my family 'idiotic'; you do not and did not know us. You have no clue what we were planning on doing that day. Even though, for the record we did not plan to swim we were pulled out against our will. We were not idiotic, we were scared victims who still have traumatic episodes about this day. Remember to be kind to everyone, those you don't know especially because there's always a lot more to a story than what you're told.
