We lived in suburbia with a goat. It ate our hibiscus hedge back each year, and we loaned him out all over the place, mostly to eat back grape vines, after which he laid down for 3 days. I grew up in south Georgia and my father raised livestock with the majority of it being goats. On average I would say he always had atleast 20 give or take a few. He had them all fenced in on about 5 acres and from my earliest memories I could never recall a time where any section of the field was overgrown. all the pine trees on the fenced in section where completely bare up to the point where the tallest goats could just not reach the pine needles anymore. they are essentially living breathing lawnmowers.

Man what a life. I would love if someone dropped me off at a buffet every day and said , “Get to work!!”

Ten years ago I rented a house in suburban Melbourne (Aus) which had a wildly overgrown garden and thick ivy up all the fences, plus some stunted soft fruit and apple trees. I spent some money getting a couple of guys to come and tame it but it was getting too costly so I stopped that and hit on the idea of having a goat. I found an old nanny that was supposedly a bit past breeding and let her have at it. Two months later the place was much improved and after four months it was completely cleared of everything I didn't want. When the soft fruit and apples were about ripe the goat ate the whole lot of them over one weekend and became so ill with bloat that she nearly died, but she survived the episode and I kept her for another few months until it was time to rebuild the back fence. At that post I returned her to the farmer who was so impressed with her condition that he thought she would breed again. No more goats for me after that but the garden was easily maintained from then on. Goats are great way to clear a bit of land and there is only minimal need to take stuff away afterwards because the bulk of the problem has been eaten; not to mention that the land will have been fertilised into the bargain.

Pros: A cleaner backyard, didn't have to pay any wages, and a very healthy happy goat family. Gotta love it. :)
