God of War Ragnarok Graphics Comparison: PS5 vs. PS4 vs. PS4 Pro

The long-awaited follow up to the stellar God of War (2018) is almost here, and there are a lot of ways to play the game. God of War Ragnarok will be launching simultaneously on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. So whether you're up to date with a PS5 and want to see how Sony Santa Monica has utilized that extra hardware, or if you're still rocking a base model PS4 or even a PS4 Pro, this video should give you an idea as to what you're visually in for. Make sure to sound off in the comments how you'll be enjoying God of War Ragnarok!
All platforms captured were using version 1.003.000.
God of War Ragnarok has a lot of different graphics options to choose from. If you're playing on a base model PlayStation 4 or PS4 slim, unfortunately you won't get acesss to any visual options. The game still looks stellar, but when playing on that platform, you get what you get. However, owners of both the PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5 get a few more options. Both the Pro and PS5 allows user to select if they'd like to play the game in a mode that Favors Resolution, at the cost of a lower frame rate, or Favor Framerate, that smooths out the gameplay all while lowering the visual fidelity.

Can someone tell my why we do need a Ps5? This newest console generation is the most useless console generation in history every single Ps5 game can run the same on Ps4 with just 1080p instead of 4k and 30fps instead of 60. You really don't need a new console generation for that. At this point new console generations are like getting new smarthpones no one needs new smarthpones or new consoles generation for better technic anymore we just get new consoles generations for the sake of having new consoles generations and for developers to milk more money from people

programmer here. people should learn more about what game engine these games used. they still used unreal engine 4. it doesn't matter what hardware you have. if it can play it, the graphics will be the same. except for the fps.

Exclusive games have always pushed hardwares to their limits. That's why almost every exclusive is top, because developers can do amazing stuff with one single architecture as the target one.

There are definitely differences. However, for people wondering why there isn't that much of a graphical difference (but definitely a performance difference) it is because they needed to create it first and foremost to run on PS4. Until game developers create games only and specifically for PS5, these sorts of games will be held back.

It’s hard to grasp the difference over a compressed KZfaq video. I’ve got a ps5 and xsx and have done multiple comparisons between games on old vs new consoles and the differences in real time are very appealing on the eyes. Days Gone felt like a brand new game on ps5 compared to a ps4 pro. A few things these last few years caused this console generation transition to take longer than usual which is why we’re still getting games made for ps4 and upgraded with ps5. This will change soon and we will start seeing changes and features/gameplay elements that just wouldn’t be possible on old hardware. Until then the amount of backwards compatibility upgrades and the few current gen exclusives we have received have absolutely made the current gen machines worth it, and it’s only up from here. I’m just glad everyone will get to enjoy GOW Ragnarok

The real benefits of next gen are only the load times and faster fps performance modes. Even in larger screens, resolution differences aren’t that noticeable. No one notices those minute differences during gameplay anyways

Often the difference between a lame 2d adaptation vs a 3d version as intended. Right now, besides the loading times, no real necessity to buy a PS5. Until a slim/pro version comes along, I'll favor my old gen 4 pro.

The sheer quality and efficiency of this hardware are simply remarkable. And let's not forget the incredible selection of games it can run flawlessly, even to this day! It's impressive for a 10+ year old console because PS4 got released in 2013 but the hardware it's older than that, it's also sad because the developers had to do the game for the old gen first and then the current gen, that's why the design might feel outdated in a way but we need to wait another 2-3 years in order to see that improvement because cross gen games are going to go away by next year, in 2023 we are going to get games that are already made for cross gen but after that you better expect some improvement in graphics

It takes years of engineering and testing hardware, so what they had build for the console wasn't made in 2013, it's much older than that, that's why some games can't even run on PS4/Xbox, what they achieved with Ragnarok on this hardware is impressive

It was actually designed from the start as a PS4 title according to the devs. And you really just get performance on PS5 and some sharper images. It’s almost a swan song title for the PS4 as we start moving out of cross gen next year. The very best the hardware can push at the end of it’s lifecycle.

Do game developers have to rank all the textures in terms of priority when designing them so that the systems know which ones to leave out?

Not really. On PC games, you can set texture resolution, filtering, lighting, etc. However, such settings are unavailable on game consoles, so developers just include the necessary textures for that system. That is why Jedi: Survivor is 155GB on PC, but only 44GB on the Xbox Series S. It's possible that the PS Store actually downloads the same files for all PlayStation consoles, however, so those principles may not apply between PS5, PS4, and PS4 Pro.

Well it is incredibly difficult to acquire a ps5 yet due to all the demand especially now in comparison to its supply so if SMS would upped the ante here and maximized the game for the ps5 it would not have sold much due to the fewer amount of people who owned the ps5. Maybe if the game was released like 2 years later, then we would have the graphics you were hoping for and it would sell really well.

Game is optimized brilliantly, so that people can enjoy it on ps4 and ps4 pro without giving up much on graphics. There is a difference of fps but 30 fps is also cool, no worries there

@@thewholefnshow7500 They have to eventually. We are 2 years in into the generation. Spiderman will be absolutely restricted if it's also made on the PS4, so Sony made the right decision to make this Ps5 only.

So practically the only benefit of the PS5 from graphical perspective is that it can run the games at 60fps rather than 30fps, otherwise the graphics itself looks almost identical. That actually makes sense considering that the PS5's GPU is just slightly more than double the speed of PS4 Pro's GPU, so the math actually adds up.

Ragnarok can actually go up to 120fps on the ps5, but it hovers around 70-90 fps range

These random ps5 exclusive players really need to chill ur buts and understand the fact that the first game was announced for ps4. And there is an equal number of fans who still play the game on ps4 and still enjoy it. So why ruin that feeling making it a ps5 exclusive???? My point isnt about the detail difference but just imagine making the game an exclusive for ps5 and that would only make it a disaster for the previous gen fans. Plus the graphices being identical is pretty much because they optimized it for both platforms.

LMFAO in no universe should anyone intelligent be wasting money on an SSD for a PS4.....Im so sick of the misinformation that people keep spreading about SSDs. The PS4 was not designed to take advantage of an SSD nor does it, just because you might get a load screen that lasts 2 seconds less with an SSD than with an HDD doesn't mean anything.....Last gen machines were not designed in any way to take advantage of SSDs.

Honestly wish they made this a PS5 exclusive so we could see the potential full power of the PS5. Limiting the graphics to be able to still hold 30 fps on a console that launched nearly 10 years ago is a bummer..

If you want 60fps on PS5, this is the graphical limit. The console has the performance of something like an RTX 2060 Super, meaning 4k 60fps (native) is something the PS5 can´t handle at all at 60fps. Demon´s Souls did show it, it is either 4k30fps or 1440p60fps with some hiccups.

@@jrm956 that's not really the case anymore. Consoles are built more like PCs now so the developers have an easier time optimizing their games to harness the full power of the consoles. The only thing holding them back now is having to optimize the games for the weaker consoles like the PS4.
