The depravity of the human race has been blatantly displayed in every place throughout all of history. The Apostle Paul was clearly right when he said, “None is righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).
This truth is illustrated every day. We see riots in the streets, corruption in government, perversion in marriage, and then, of course, there is plenty of sin remaining in our very own flesh. The Reformer, John Calvin, taught that such things should turn our gaze to God. He wrote, “Indeed, our very poverty better discloses the infinitude of benefits reposing in God. The miserable ruin, into which the rebellion of the first man cast us, especially compels us to look upward.”
We have all sorts of trouble down here because we have neglected to look up there. We are made in the image of God. But many have forgotten God, leaving the phrase “image of God” meaningless. Now is a time to know God and worship Him. Calvin also said, “Nearly all the wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves.” Man no longer knows himself. But there is no way to rediscover the truth about man without first coming to a true knowledge of God.
This panel discussion with Tom Ascol, Jared Longshore, Tom Nettles, Chad Vegas & James Dolezal was held on January 22, 2021 at the Founders "The Only God" national conference in Southwest Florida.

yup. im up here as well. good to know that nothing, absolutely nothing can happen to me other than what god has decreed. thats awesome because i also believe that the strength to go through this trib time is only going to bring glory to god because i dont have any hope in making it on my own. the country is being divided into provincial states and the medical advisors and mayors are given extremely hugh amounts of power. reminds me of the continent of asia as each province rules with fear and they have to report to the top group in china? rom8:26-39.

I've grown up my entire life with a vague realization and acknowledgement of the cross, but what Tom Ascol said here about the cross, evil, and God's purposes blew me away, and I have never fully appreciated this truth before.

In speaking of the Romans 9 passage, I always think of parents’ answers to kids- “because I said so.” There are times when I believe I have an obligation as a parent to explain to my children why we establish and obey certain rules, and I always try to reason in those times from the Scripture. I believe it has served my children well, and it has helped me to grow in my own obedience to Christ. But there are times (seldom as it may be) when I don’t feel a duty to explain and the answer is just “because I said so.” If that answer is sufficient for US as parents, why is it not sufficient for God Our Perfect Father?

Amen Brother! I haven’t thought about putting it that way, but you are exactly right. Very simplistic but true at the same time.

I am also deeply intrigued by Tom Nettles final question, and it is a question I would love to explore further, as I have a twin deep interest in history and theology as well.

Tom Nettles' final question was an interesting one, and I think I'd appreciate seeing further discussion of that. FWIW, the pastor of my church at the time was a Loyalist. It wasn't a popular position, as you can imagine.

So God has the same desire and intentionality that he had with the cross with every other act of history? Jeremiah 19:5 (ESV): and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or decree, nor did it come into my mind- Did God judge the sons of Jacob who sold their brother, or did he treat them with mercy, because he had taken away their agency when compelling them to sell him? Ex: why would Satan have to enter Judas’ heart to get him to complete the sin he had already committed to, if God does that already with all people everywhere?

@@KJV_bibleteaching But unfortunately for Leighton his "understanding" of Calvinism has proven to be incorrect. There is much he doesn't understand and IF Calvinism is what LF says it is, then I wouldn't be a calvinist either. He refuses to take correction and repeatedly uses the same arguments no matter how many times they have been adequately and thoroughly answered. Simply put, he is very dishonest. You can say what you will about Calvinism. Your failure to understand the clear teachings of scripture poses to threat to its internal and eternal truth. I fear for people like you and LF, given what you have said and what he has said about reformed theology, what if you're wrong? What does your hatred of these beautiful doctrines mean for you when you stand before your almighty creator? Think about what you are saying.
