WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves - that we've been (taken.)so credulous. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise.)” - Carl Sagan

At 5:48, the caller Brian asks Matt if he ever seen Star Trek. It reminded me of what Spock said. "If this is your god, he's not very impressive. He has many psychological problems. He's so insecure that he demands worship every seven days. He goes out and created faulty humans and then blames them for his own mistakes. He's a pretty poor excuse for a supreme being." -From The Original Draft Of Star Trek The Motion Picture.

@@MarxistKnight Unfortunately, this caller (appears to be) the exception. Not the rule. It is simultaneously depressing and totally revealing how many theists choose the second option- faking it. That's when the willful ignorance and intellectually dishonesty begin. And from that one single crossroad, we get countless theists on the road to being insufferable and impossible to take seriously, rather than theists who became Atheists because they cared about whether what they believe is ACTUALLY true or not. From there, it's a short slope to "reality is whatever position is most convenient to me at any particular moment". And then it eventually leads to nothing but mind boggling projection. Keep in mind, these are the same people that preach "facts over feelings". Funny how the people who coined that phrase are almost always the same ones with the GLARING insecurities and the fragile widdle egos. I guess for them, deep down, all that matters is "whatever helps me sleep at night". It's so predictable, yet still pathetic nevertheless. The scary thing is how numerous and dense these people truly must be, to (even remotely) believe that anybody can or will take them seriously. Reinforcing the self delusion then becomes paramount in priority for them, because by that point it's "if I tell myself something is true enough times, then eventually it becomes true" (despite all evidence to the contrary). And when it gets too uncomfortable for them to ignore the obvious, accurate response by (rational) people living in the REAL world? It's burying one's head in the sand, running away, and starting over with parroting the delusions on the next thread. Willful ignorance. Project. Get exposed. Run away. Rinse, repeat. Over and over. Before you know it, your "Dr. (🤣) James Powers" or "Canadian Catholic". Don't be "Canadian Catholic". I guess when mere mortals will no longer tolerate you, you find a higher power.

Atheism isn't intended to provide answers. It's a starting point not an end point. It's like alcoholism: you can't do anything to help yourself until you acknowledge you have a problem. Theists are drunk on God and the 'answers' they claim to see are really just illusions feeding their addiction.

@SPEIRS OMNHURST Athiesm is a single position on the belief in a god. Athiesm makes no pronouncements regarding any other question other than the existence of a God….so what answers do you think they should be giving? Theists believe in a god. Athiests ask if Thiests can provide evidence for this belief……and so far theists have failed to do so. Please tell me an answer for any issue that religion offers an answer for , that a secular world view doesn’t also provide an answer for? Can you provide evidence that ANYTHING supernatural exists? Because the only LOGICAL way to approach life is to withhold belief until you are provided with sufficient evidence.
@trixn4285
@trixn4285 2 жыл бұрын
@SPEIRS OMNHURST The point is that god-believe is not an answer to anything if you really care about if your believes are true. You could stick in god for any question that you don't have an answer to so it has no explanatory power at all. If you don't care and think that you need an answer to lead a healthy life no matter if that answer is true then sure religion is a way to do that. But to suggest that someone needs made up answers to lead a good life is demonstrably false. In short: Theism has no answers either.

The rarest thing in the world is a person who can admit the superiority of an opponent's argument, esp on a topic as sensitive and emotionally charged as religion. Wherever Brian from Chicago ended up after this conversation, he has my respect for being willing to listen with a open mind, and concede that his adherence to religion was founded, to some extent, upon fear for loss of social connections if he became an admitted non-believer. But whatever his public stance toward religion might be now, I'd bet that he no longer truly believes--people who are open-minded enough to honestly consider opposing viewpoints are seldom able to continue within organizations that make exclusive claims to truth.

@Jimmy James “𝘐𝘍….𝘐𝘍….𝘐𝘍….𝘪𝘧 it’s proven that life was the result of a creator…” That’s a pretty big fucking 𝘐𝘍 Jimmy. Your whole argument is based on 𝘐𝘍 something happened. You yourself don’t even know if it happened, you’re just assuming that it did so that you even have an argument to begin with. You accuse atheists of making backwards claims, but that is exactly what you are doing here. You assume god exists and then work backwards using his existence as a reason for life, without proving that he actually exists in the first place. You must prove that this god or yours exists before using it as an explanation for something. Right now, universe farting pixies are just as viable as an explanation for creation as your god is.

As an Irish ex-Roman Catholic, I can empathise with the psychological and emotional turmoil associated with letting go of such a deeply entrenched and insidious belief system. The lock-in and lock-out clauses, that are central to such rigid and irrational doctrines, are deliberately constructed to cause these very human distresses. That being, "believe unquestioningly, or be lost for eternity", and "To question or doubt, is the Devil's work". I hope things have gotten clearer for you since and you're enjoying the immense liberation that comes with shedding a deeply flawed weight of baggage ?👍 It's far from easy, but the rewards are very real and immeasurably outweigh the alternative.

Before theists can make any claims about gods doing anything, they need to prove any gods exist first. It's basic logic. I guess that explains why theists can't understand it. The caller might be qualified to teach Sunday school, but he isn't qualified to teach basic logic at kindergarten level.

@Ben-no4lz
@Ben-no4lz 2 жыл бұрын
@SPEIRS OMNHURST Your argument is circular. You’re saying that the only way that the Universe can exist is if it had an intelligent designer. Then you are saying that because the universe exists, that proves God. You don’t just get to assert that the only way the universe comes into being is by intelligent design. You would first need to demonstrate that this universe did indeed come into existence (Since we cannot blobserve beyond the Planck time, there is no way of proving that our universe hasn’t been here forever & the Big Bang was part of a cycle of expansion & contraction) Then you would have to rule out; Multiverse theory, Experimentation by advanced Aliens, Giant space monsters that shit out universes etc…. Anyone can come up with a magic explaination for everything- but they shouldn’t be believed until they have proved their explaination actually exists. So you do not get to claim “The only way the universe could happen is if it was created by an intelligent being” - Until you have demonstrated that such a being even exists. The Bible!? Really 🤦🏻‍♂️ The Bible is a collection of manuscripts from anonymous authors, with no originals- only copies of translations from dead languages based on source material dated 100s of years after the events it described. Multiple manuscripts have been removed & others have been replaced with forgeries, just to keep up the magical lie it’s trying to tell. If the Bible is true then even if some god exists, it’s clearly not Moral or Loving. •Drowning the entire world because you gave them free will then didn’t like how they acted? = Psycho/Murderer/Immoral •Banning the eating of shellfish but not banning Slavery = Idiot/Immoral/Evil •Commanding Witches to be killed even though there’s no such thing as Witches = proof that the Bible is a bunch of myths,legends & superstitions of Iron Age Sheperds that men have altered and corrupted over the centuries to gain control over uneducated & gullible people (Like you) PROVE TO ME THAT YOUR GOD EXISTS. Or you DO NOT get to offer it as an explaination and offer the Bible as evidence. Because I can offer Magic fairies as an explaination & offer all the books about Fairies as my evidence.

The caller is basically summarizing Pascal's wager. The issue with it is that there are many many versions of god presented. Believing in any one god just in case does not give you a 50% chance of being right, plus an omnipotent god would instantly peg you as disingenuous and may not take kindly to posers.

@Neal Fernan I actually feel a little bad that you went to such lengths to respond. However, implicit in every word is the notion that there is an eternal afterlife. There is an episode of "Westworld," where the robots are recycled. They are told they, too, are going to Paradise, and are taken through a door, where they are disassembled. You have no soul, not any part of the individual survives. Sorry you so desperately cling to your selfish dream of eternal life. I can tell you, you have already lost big chunks of the one life you DO have!

@Neal Fernan I doubt Jesus was a person, but it doesn't matter to me. YOU have to believe it, or there could be no resurrection, which is essential to your stories. The bible stories are supposed to explain the mysteries of the world to superstitious men who were terrified of the dark. Every culture and sect has them. No, I do not believe there is a god, or a devil, angels, spirits, or ghosts. There is.not, nor will there ever be, a battle of good and evil, no Armageddon. The only reason people even heard of Jesus is that the Roman Empire adopted the religion and spread it BY THE SWORD. You are a fish that is unaware it lives in water.
