The Godfather lighting setup is a low key lighting technique that was popularised as the technique used to film Marlon Brando's character, Don Vito Corleone, by Godfather cinematographer Gordon Willis. More recently, it's also used a LOT by Josh Yeo from @MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL (if you haven't already, check out his work - seriously!)
Godfather lighting is a specific type of top lighting that uses a soft light source, with very controlled spill. This particular cinematic low key lighting example is particularly well suited to villainous or mysterious characters, because it obscures the eyes, making the characters intentions difficult to read by the audience.
In this tutorial we will also show you how you can also use eye light to further enhance this technique and make the character appear even more sinister.
And don't forget to checkout our Film Lighting Techniques playlist for more cinematic and dramatic lighting techniques that you can apply to your own projects.
