It's not a bad word, it's a double entendre. This is what he sings in English: IF I Give YOU THE BARBER HE WILL COME AND HE WILL GO, BUT HE'LL ALWAYS HOLD HIS RAZOR IN HIS HANDS... IF HE LIKES THE IDEA HE'LL RAZOR YOU OH MY DAUGHTER.

You're right. The first time I saw this movie, at the theater with my father, he said, "Boy, that don't have weddings like that anymore." He was a kid in the time frame of "The Godfather" story. Grew up in the 1940s and probably attended at least one such wedding.

My wifes family are all Sicilian, and both grandparents were originally from the village of Alia, which is across the valley from Corleone . The island is an incredible place, with a very rich history and the best Greek ruins in the Mediterranean . Olive trees that are 1000 years old and still producing fruit are everywhere. Hard to believe with what happened there in WW II but most of the countryside was undamaged. It is Italy unmasked and worth the trip.

@clusterflick6333
@clusterflick6333 3 жыл бұрын
@@charleskobold115 It wasn't about fighting to defend their land; it was about fighting to defend Mussolini and his regime. The Italian people weren't that keen on fighting and dying in the name of that fucking clown and his band of murderers-- and rightfully so! In the end, Mussolini was hanged for crimes against the Italian people and his corpse was hung by the heels, upside down, in a public square in Milan, so people could walk by and spit on his face -- that's how the Italian people really felt about him. Too bad the Germans weren't wise enough to give *their* murderous dictator the same treatment.

@@clusterflick6333 The Russians and all of the other ethnic groups of the Soviet Union were not too keen on fighting and dying for Stalin but still did. The Mafia continues to hold Southern Italy back in a terrible way and the people who are part of it and those who celebrate it should be ashamed of themselves. Compare Palermo with Bolzano. Where would just about anyone want to live? Without shame the mafia has turned Napoli into a complete trash heap! I don't have anything against Italian culture or the people in anyway. But I can't stand the glorification of the mafia! What a destructive force. That was one thing Mussolini was spot on about. Crushing them for the greater good of a society they were holding back in such a serious way.

@Sports Entertainment Against overwhelming odds and with great skill I must say. There were no war crimes committed against civilians by the Germans in Sicily, there were no SS units present doing mass executions like in Eastern Europe. At least Germans are now very ashamed and made aware of the crimes of fascism whereas so many people continue to glorify the very thing that is so destructive to their own interests.

This song is a mother daughter conversation on marriage. The daughter wants to get married and asks her mother to find her a husband. In repeat verses the mother lists possibilities by occupation. Each is holding a phallic symbol object associated with his occupation which he will latter use on the daughter. The butcher is always holding his sausage, the fisherman his fish, the fireman his hose. the gardener his cucumber etc. Verses are added by those who step up to sing. Gesticulating with the hands and sometimes the body is part of the performance as seen with the old man here. It's a funny song but 2 words in particular are funnier . The word for fish (pesce) is slang for penis. The pronunciation of the word sasizza (sausage) has a very comical ring when used as a symbol for a penis. This is a patriarchal view of marriage where marital sex is something the husband does to the wife when he has the urge. There must be something about the guttural sound of this song sung in southern Italian dialect that encourages even dyed in the wool feminists to cheer and clap along. Perhaps not so much if they knew what this song was really about.

It's great how, in consecutive scenes, they: (1) Show Sandra being humorous with the others girls about Sonny's big unit; (2) Have the old man sing a song about screwing; (3) Show Lucy running up the stairs to take on Sonny and his big unit. Great screenwriting, IMHO.

Also, if you really look, when Sonny's wife is laughing with the other girls, she suddenly turns back around again with an upset look on her face. In the background, you see Lucy getting up from her table and running off with Sonny, preparing for their tryst, and the hurt look on Sandra's face was her reaction to seeing that. (You can't see it in this clip, because it's cut too close.)

The late, great, doomed Richard S. Castellano (1933-1988), who found his "role of a lifetime" portraying Peter Clemenza in The Godfather. He could have repeated the role in all 3 Godfather flicks, but got into a heated argument about dialogue with Francis Ford Coppola & was pretty much "persona non grata" in Hollywood after that.
