We tested the Godox V1s with its new round head in this "part advertising and mostly edutainment video." Using principles within our "Beyond Craft - The Art of Photography" e-learning series, we based the final picture on the idea of what Henry Peach Robinson might do with this new on or off-camera flash.
Go Beyond Craft. bit.ly/2NLUVYT
Robinson is famous for his pioneering photography techniques such as combination printing (what we generally refer to as a composite photo or compositing today ) and wrote many excellent books that we enjoy reading on photography as Art in the late 1800s.
His first was Pictorial Effect in Photography: Being Hints on Composition and Chiaroscuro for Photographers.
archive.org/de...
As this picture and video is a creative tribute, we didn't seek to imitate or emulate precisely what Henry would have done or written about in his texts. We desired to create something unique that shows the tremendous amount of gratitude, respect, and admiration we have for those who went before us.
One of our former mentoring students said,
"I love how you went beyond the "here's what I do with off-camera flash OCF" by delivering an inspiring video about life, being a beautiful example of a father and son relationship, provide a lesson in storytelling, Art, and lighting for photographers, all while creating a stunning image. "
Cami Grudzinski
The Behind The Scenes video runs 8 minutes and 47 seconds.
Part 1 Start to 2:31
Ever looked at a picture in a book or magazine, on a wall or in a gallery and wonder what transpired in the moments leading up to the shutter clicking? We unveil the Godox V1 after laying the foundation about things that are important to the characters in the picture.
Part 2 - The Idea from 2:32 to 3:54
Go behind the idea and learn more about HPR. Plus, problem-solving on-location photography.
Part 3 - The Inspiration from 3:55 to 5:19
David Edmonson (my father) and I sit down after the shoot and touch on relevant topics to us like Composition, alternating Tones, and subject matter themes in Pictorial photography.
Part 4 - The Proper Tools from 5:21 to 6:38
Look at the tools we used including the Godox V1 on-camera flash with a round head (used off-camera) and the AK-R1 Accessory Kit lighting modifiers. See the unique lighting patterns when compared to a standard rectangular flash head.
Part 5 - Stories That Matter 6:39 to 7:02
Street, wedding, portrait, travel, commercial, and more styles or genres of photography may find small, portable, and powerful lighting appealing. The bigger question is...What stories are YOU going to create?
Part 6 - The Details 7:03 - 8:46 end.
New or beginning photographers may enjoy knowing where we placed our lights, what modifiers we used, and what were the flash and camera settings. While more seasoned or professional photographers may benefit from seeing our creative process.
We agree with Henry's premise that it's ok for an Artist to put their stamp on their work. He talks about it on page 42 & 43 in his book Picture Making by Photography.
archive.org/de...
That's why intentionally styling or staging this scene was done, not to deceive but to make a more beautiful arrangement.
Side note: At 7:30, we mention rewarding someone for looking. To discover more about this concept, check out William Mortensen's book Command To Look.
www.shishigami....
Next, we share our Nikon D850's camera and lens settings and show our lighting diagrams and scene sketches. Keep in mind, there are many ways to light a scene, and this was ours. We encourage you to go out and explore and develop your preferred styles.
People who've attended our workshops or heard us speak may recall our belief of "The principles of Art & Design inform us as to what is aesthetically pleasing in our photos. And it's our Craft or technical ability that allows us to realize our preconceived ideas."
One of the qualities that I admire about my father is his willingness to grow.
After almost 50 years as a commercial photographer, David is still willing to learn, seek refinement, and risk failure. I am fortunate that he's shot weddings with me nearly 20 years ago and watching first hand as explored portrait and fine art photography over the past decades.
It's his influence in my life that reminds me that we all have stories worth telling. Our excuse? We have a camera. Can't wait to see what you create!

Absolutely great work and story here but complex for my level of lighting.
@LukeEdmonson
@LukeEdmonson 5 жыл бұрын
In the context of my lifetime, it was too complex for my level of lighting as well not long ago! We all begin with one light, grow to two or three and keep building from there. Doesn't matter where you start, all that matters is getting started! I find that working with continuous lights helps speed up the process and once you become familiar with that, then working with speedlights or any OCF becomes easier and easier! Good luck in your journey!

Nice video - but! If you have 10 godox V1s and 20 batteries plus a modifier - you can do it all - or buy 2 godox V1s and 2 godox smooth background flashes and 2-3 LED video lights for example (godox sl-60w) - and you are the king.
@LukeEdmonson
@LukeEdmonson 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, there are many ways to light a scene. Our challenge from Godox for this video was to just use the V1's. But we mix and match all the time in our professional work. Never use a light that doesn't have a specific purpose just to add complexity. We love intentional lighting - whatever number of lights that may be!

@LukeEdmonson
@LukeEdmonson 2 жыл бұрын
We use the Godox Xpro N (Nikon) triggers. If they don't connect, the first thing I'd look into is whether they are on the same channel. You've probably already done that but just in case, that's a great place to start. From there, you might look at firmware or other options such as what group settings you've got them on...obviously, your V1 needs to also be set into the wireless mode where it can connect to the Xpro ahead of time.

How much (if at all) did the modeling lights contribute to the video shoot??
@LukeEdmonson
@LukeEdmonson 2 жыл бұрын
Hey John, great question! If you are asking how much did the modeling lights contribute to the video shoot in regards to contributing to the overall lighting then the answer is they are negligible. I'm going to guess that it's about a 2w LED lamp (although you can control or dial up or down the power.) Do they help in terms of being able to somewhat see where you are pointing your light? Certainly in darker environments or if they are close to your subject. Does that help answer your question? If you asked me would I rather have them or not have them, I definitely like having them and even use them in a pinch to help shoot details on the wedding day. Luke

Thank you, John! I'm not sure if you saw in the description section that there are time markers and descriptions of what happens in each section. The idea was to make it easier for people to skip directly to the parts they want to see if they wanted. Yes, it's not a perfect solution, but a workaround we thought might help those most interested in some but not all of the content. As always, we are still learning and growing!

Result is great.godox do need to create at least small softboxes for those new round lights. Without that the result is quite harsh light.well i guess prophoto will make then first and godox will copycat it as it did with this light.

It seems that the patent of a roundheaded flash has been around (in China at least) since 2011. I wonder who is actually copying who? If one wishes to pay $1,300 for a flashhead (admittedly a cool looking thing) firing 76w of power then people can go right ahead, I can hear the Prophoto marketing team laughing from here.... One can buy 2 x Godox AD200 and a V1 for the same price. The Godox system works flawlessly. Source: petapixel.com/2019/04/09/godox-to-retailers-we-did-not-steal-profotos-designs/
