The thing that makes this film so good - It does not even need Godzilla in it to be a compelling story

At the end of the day, I think what really makes Minus One work is the fact that it was made with artistic passion and intent; whereas so many American films are clearly just being made to earn profits for shareholders.

Godzilla Minus One is the movie I always wanted but never expected.

His name (Koichi) is pronounced ko-ee-chee, not kee-o-chee. But I agree, this is Godzilla as he should be; dangerous, powerful, destructive, filled with rage against humanity and a warning about the careless arrogance of man.

The mechanic Tachibana is so important in the plot because he is not really an independent character with a life of his own but just a projection of Koichi's soul towards the external worlds,. See how all what Tachibana does is just to exteriorize what Koichi feels, the self hatred, the sense of guilt, of humiliation, the despair then, finally, the will to fight and the recovery of his pride, resolve and self respect. Also see that the interactions of Tachibana are practically all with Koichi, if memory serves me well, because his own reason to be is to let Koichi's soul to express itself. That is why the best moment of the film from the POV of Koichi is when he is about to take off and Tachibana gives him full military honors, that is himself being himself again. That is why he absolutely needs Tachibana when he has finally decide to fight, he needs him because the mechanic is part of himself.

Thank you for expressing so clearly right up front why this movie is so great! Godzilla is an embodiment of not only the protagonist's demons, but also of every other character's. This is a point so many other reviewers only touch on or fumble around with without hitting the nail on the head.

Spot on bother. There was bound to be a movie to put Hollywood in its place. I think the world is just shocked that Godzilla -1 was the one to do it. Its always amazing to see the underdog win the fight.

The one thing I hate about videos like this is the comparison to other current Godzilla movies is due to the fact that people make it seem that the only good Godzilla movies are the serious ones. Not all Godzilla movies have to represent a compelling story. It’s not just Hollywood. A LOT of Godzilla films have bad characters. That’s just how it is. Though they should make an attempt.

The same method can be applied to writing characters for fan fiction writers as well. Im currently writing a Ben Ten/HTTYD fan fiction crossover and im having some of ben's aliens he transform into bring up issues for Hiccup because of the trauma and when Ben is fighting certain dragons he's dealing with his own post traumatic stress from battling Vilgax for years since it takes place in the Alien force era and I've been wanting to explore that for a while. I definitely took notes from this movie on writing war related guilt especially in a sci-fi setting.

As a fan of the franchise you made a good video but I disagree with you Godzilla does not always have to be the villain keep in mind there's so many incarnations of the character there is no such thing as a definitive version of Godzilla. The reason the legendary pictures made their version of Godzilla the hero is because you want the general audience to be on Godzilla side and secondly you want to sell toys. Keep in mind this isn't the first time where Godzilla was a hero many movies of the past also has Godzilla as an anti-hero. Keep keep this in mind that the director of minus one was a big fan of the monsterverse. Toho couldn't be happier we're getting so much Godzilla content while the Japanese company makes dark movies The Americans can make fun movies I call that a win win

For a second this was a filmento video (the guy with the most boring voice I've heard from a film critic) but I found this video pretty good.

In the monster verse films there are only few characters I like in the first one it’s Brian Cranston because he is actually interesting and I hate that they killed him off, in Kotm I really only like Shirizawa and the Old comedic guy, and in GvK Bernie is the only character that is pretty interesting

I see Legendary's MonsterVerse as above the rest of Hollywood because their films come out 2-3 years apart as opposed to 1 film per year or even multiples films in one year. And it's also a collaborative between Legendary and Toho rather than some rivalry which is a false narrative I've seen some people push - and I see it here. So hearing the MV lumped in with Hollywood and belittled to prop up Minus One is rather frustrating. Have you also seen Doktor Skipper's "Godzilla Doesn't Work in America" video? It's really bad, and it painted a bad image for the anti-Hollywood narrative these videos seem to push.

🤦...what with this people seriously?. They act like if the Legendary film are trash, when they are actually pretty good and fun to watch. WB doing a good job with there version of Godzilla. I love a good monster battle and WB is definitely deliberating on that. And the Japanese are taking a different approach with there Godzilla. Focusing more on the horror of a giant monster. It is a win, win.

As much as I enjoyed Minus One, I prefer Godzilla in the role of anti-hero fighting other kaiju. I don't need Godzilla to be scarier to be entertained. He can be both a monster and anti-hero at the same time. He doesn't need to be one or the other to be interesting.

But we've missed from Godzilla is his eyes in this movie you can see his eyes and they are scary I rather enjoy the very small sets you can see the small budget because of the small sets and it was nice not to have a movie that was all about the world is going to come to an end it was very small film in scope it was just about a group of people having to overcome their own demons and their own fears to take out the big bad

Just stop already.. Godzilla Minus One wasn't that great. I had a lot of fun watching it, but it's not some APEX of foreign film making, schooling Hollywood. In fact, after watching it a second time, there are several choppy edits at the end, a Godzilla that is hardly terrifying (freezing still for Koich to deliver the bomb plane) and ending with Noriko is a bit far-fetched. She would have died - everyone else did.
