It was fantastic and so refreshing to see a new film that had all the great aspects of early American cinema when films were an art form. In the West I think we underappreciate the impact and significance of Godzilla to Japanese culture. This film in my opinion was a cinematic expression of Japan finally coming to peace with the war and moving into the future. A new reborn Japan. I think the film was a way of telling the Japanese people that they can put the war behind them and while they will always face the existential threat from outside, they can rise to the purpose, confront it and defeat it even if there is loss and destruction. Amazing message to me anyways.

When I saw "Minus One." I was reminded of Japan's Kurobe Gorge Dam, which was built at the cost of 171 people. This dam was a huge facility planned to save the country from the postwar power crisis, It was built deep in the mountains at great cost. Minus one" is a fantasy, though, This is the postwar period when Japanese people put their lives on the line.

Movie theaters are special to me. My family was poor growing up, and about the only indulgence we could give ourselves on holidays and birthdays was to go see a movie in theaters. I also went with my friends when there was some cool movie coming out that we were all looking forward to. Just stepping foot in a theater immediately brings back a flood of feelings connected to these happy experiences of childhood. For that reason, I will continue to visit theaters, for the movies, but even more so, for the memories. Even if theaters die, I will go down with the ship. I'll be the last guy, sitting in the last showing of the last movie in the last theater; I owe that much to a place that has been my happy place, that has transported me to countless worlds, each one leaving an impression on my mind and my life.

Honestly I love this movie more than anyone I’ve met does, but I haven’t thought about it as much as those people. I get out most of my excitement talking with my siblings about the movie then I just have it in the back of my mind. I know that I think it’s the best movie, best story ever told but after spending an hour gushing about it with my siblings 2 times now, I don’t really think about it much. Also though, I think a large part of it (if not, the main part) is just that its too good for my brain to properly recreate scenes of it in my head. I swear multiple times I’ve tried to zone out while thinking about the movie and each time I try to reminisce about scenes from it, my brain can’t properly recreate the impact and awe of each scene, hell even the human scenes aren’t nearly as impactful in my head. So in conclusion: because this movie is literally too good for my brain to think about in its full scale, I will A) try thinking about new scenes minus one godzilla could be in And B) try to watch as much minus one footage on a daily basis as possible

And I was so happy to watched it in 4Dx, it was my best experience in theaters this year and these last years, with Oppenheimer. I am so so sad that I can't watch it again, it's a movie I would love to experience in Imax with my brothers. I just can't understand why it was only 2 days in France T-T .

I listened to the score the other night and admittedly got emotional when I came to the Godzilla Suite. I've heard it a thousand times over years of watching all the Godzilla films. But it hit differently this time because it plays over not the Japanese military defending the country, but a ragtag group of civilian volunteers, survivors of a war they lost, once again called to defend their homeland because no one else can. It's a beautiful way to connect with the film and the universe. This film has surprised me and nothing surprises me, hyperbole notwithstanding.

The sound track, the story, the classic look and fear of Godzilla is what really adds to this movie tenfold. I’ve already order a poster for it and won a free one as well. This movie is beyond great this is going to be a timeless rendition that redefines the entertainment industry shifting to be more favorable towards Japanese’s hollywood over American Hollywood.

Saw it a couple of days ago and I think I have to see it at LEAST one more time (in IMAX) before it leaves the theatres. Just an amazing film. Not just the special effects and the story and the cinematography… but the ACTING is top notch. Kamiki Ryunosuke (who plays the lead character) deserves an Oscar nomination without a doubt. I bet that Hiroyuki Sanada and Ken Watanabe (two powerhouse Japanese actors) are looking at this and regretting not being part of it. Ha.

I think it was more than a good film - it was an important film. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that this film will inspire a new generation of makers who realize what can be done with good, human storytelling, economic character development, show-don't-tell fundamentals, and efficient use of budget. It raises the bar for moviemaking in the 2020s and beyond and makes most of today's Hollywood fare (including its own Godzilla movies) virtually (if not totally) unwatchable. People will point to this film as a game changer in years to come, and not just in the limited sense of making monster/blockbuster/kaiju movies. It's a reminder of what great directors of the 1970s knew and were so good at.

Godzilla: Minus One is not like other movies I've seen in recent years. For the first time in ages I saw a movie that makes me immediately want to go back and watch it again. The last two times I felt like this was for "Interstellar" and "Edge of Tomorrow". Both movies have complex plots because time itself is treated as a character. In all of these movies we watch the characters struggling to survive in a desperate attempt to save the world. I believe today is the last day Godzilla: Minus One will be in an IMAX near me. It's strange but I feel like if I don't see it for a 2nd time I'll miss out.

I don’t know about you, but I think this film really nails similar themes of 50s and early 60s Japanese cinema: The theme of finding purpose in a world of suffering. The theme of Should I keep on living or die? I think it fits right in with the likes of Ikiru and Sansho the Bailiff. It feels like the culmination of that time period.

Excellent summary. This is why this movie is great. It is a metaphor for the struggles we all face. The contemplation of our own life and our own death. It speaks to every person. It captures the excellence of the golden age of Japanese cinema. The struggles of an individual. Executed slowly and carefully and always with great respect. And finally it reaffirms life and forgiveness. Godzilla is not the main character but an agent of change. It's a film about every person that happens to have Godzilla in it.

In my opinion, I don't think Koichi was ever a coward. I think he was intelligent enough to know that his kamikaze attack would have been worthless in the grand scheme of the war, and when he was faced with the choice of making a feeble attempt at attacking the creature on Odo Island, Koichi chose to live on. His hand shakes not from cowardice but because he can't push himself to make the choice to end his life for a meaningless purpose. He made an oath to his country to die fighting for it, but his made oaths not his parents as well to come home alive. That oath took priority, and when he was told to live on for Akiko, and given the choice to live or die, Koichi was able to make a difference and win the fight AND survive to continue on for the people that love him. What a fantastic film.

Then, it caught fire and went back to a full day of showings. Now it's being re-released in black and white! I was finally able to see it in the theater the other day for the first showing. It went from 5 of us to about 20 of us by the time the movie started. This was for a Tuesday noon screening. Like you, I was deeply moved as well. The power of great storytelling. The word of mouth and return viewings is keeping the train rolling. The movie is even being showcased on the LED screen at LA Live. So happy for the continued success. I am so glad that you mentioned the score. It was a great blend of the new cues with the classic original G theme. Your home viewing experience may not have the same effect, but it shouldn't. That's the power of watching a movie in a theater. However, I think your love of the film will remain just like mine will. ~ Caretaker

I love Shin Godzilla and the magic was never gone, even after having watched it for more than 10 times. So while what happened with King Kong can happen with any film, only time can tell if you can enjoy Minus One again as times goes on. And I think its a movie that you will definitely enjoy more if you can start scratching beneath the surface of its final product. Once you get into things like the nuance in its message, or the attention to details put into the films, you just cant help but appreciate it even more even when you realize the flaws in the product.

Some movies you just know won't be the same at home. After having an incredible experience seeing Annihilation in the theater, I recommended it to a few friends, who (of course) ended up watching it on their laptops and pretty much everyone said "meh, it was OK." I saw it twice in the theater and it really needed the big screen, great audio, and probably the captive nature of being in an audience. I just went to see Godzilla Minus One Minus Color last night and I thought it was even better in that format. Just amazing. I was going to see it again tomorrow, but the only show is in the afternoon and I have to work, unfortunately.

11 times for me and tomorrow will be 12. I've seen it in all the formats and even 4DXS which pretty much beat me to death, but it added to the experience. I'm not a Godzilla fanboy by any means, but this is not just a Godzilla movie. It's a masterpiece of cinema unlike all the trash they've had the nerve to call cinema over the last 20 years. I will also keep going to it until it's pulled from theaters and I really really hope they bring the monochrome version to the US. My passport is up to date just in case. LOL

Watched it in IMAX last week and this bargain Tuesday I decided to watch it in 4DX. Truly such a fun movie to watch in that format and only the second movie that I've decided to splurge on the experience (Maverick was the other). Although it is leaving the 4DX format I wouldn't rush out to watch this version of it. While extremely fun it actually detracts from the movie itself. While you have the chance go see the movie, if you can find it on an IMAX screen all the better.

Godzilla Minus One's biggest strength is its script and performances. It will hold up MUCH better on small screen than Jackson's King Kong which relied on spectacle.

THe director Mr.Yamazaki wanted to make an "experience" for the audience and not just watching it. For example, a gigantic speaker was set in a middle of a baseball stadium to record the realistic/natural echo of full power roar of Godzilla.
