22:18 - From what I heard, the way this Godzilla’s atomic breath works is very much like a nuclear power plant. The spikes are like cooling rods that keep the power in check. As they move out, the power starts to build up. He takes in oxygen, an essential fuel for combustion. The ‘rods’ jam back into place, causing a sudden reaction not unlike what happened in Chernobyl. Godzilla forcibly expels the condensed raw power (which seems to briefly damage himself in the process) and the result is a full on nuclear explosion.

The black on Noriko's neck that looks like a tattoo is actually from Godzilla's cells. and that somehow supposedly fused with her and helped her to regenerate. This movie won for visual effects, but I'm really surprised that it didn't get more nominations. It's definitely my favorite Godzilla movie ever as well as one of my favorite movies ever now. The story and acting are just fantastic.

Actually having a compelling human plot arc helps a lot there. With the Legendary Godzilla/King films I just wanted the kaijus to kill EVERYONE because they were almost always so annoying and completely surplus to enjoying the film. Shin Godzilla is another such great Godzilla film - still my favourite in fact.

I was born in 1964 (not that that really has anything to do with anything), and I grew up with all the Godzilla movies and loved them all. the scariest one I ever saw at the theater was Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (a.k.a. Hedora). In the mid 1980's I served in the Navy and visited Japan a few times, and of course, knowing the history between the U.S. and Japan since WWII. and considering the relationship America has had with Japan since then, I was always struck with the Godzilla movies; how Japan used Godzilla as a metaphor for Atomic/Nuclear weapons at the beginning, and how Godzilla eventually became an ally with Man as he fought against other Kaiju (especially Hedora; as a metaphor for pollution) in later movies. and since the first ever Godzilla movie, Americans not only love the movie(s), but also cheer for Japan's victory against any kaiju that attacks them. Only those geniuses at ToHo could think of the idea of using such a destructive force as atomic weapons, and turn it into a "monster" for them to deal with! And something else: this Godzilla's atomic breath was such an unexpected surprise! not just his breath melting whatever he uses it against, but CAUSING an atomic explosion with it himself! Fantastically done! And in this particular story, I love how the failed Kamikaze pilot was able to regain his honor in a selfless act, and live to take care of the two girls that he came to love.

He has also said he did it because he didn't want the movie to end on a purely positive note, and on previous interviews that he had also talked about Godzilla being like an angered god that doesn't just destroy but leaves a curse on its wake (comparing it to Princess Mononoke's monsters even). So yeah, it's probably not a good thing for her health even if it's probably what saved her from the immediate blast.

I’m happy that you watched the movie until the end of the end credits, because the director put his thoughts into it with the sound of footsteps and roars by Godzilla. To me, as Japanese, I was a little surprised to know that many Americans leave their seats before the end credits finish. Many Japanese stay their seats until the end, because in my opinion, they consider that a movie is included the end credits, or some respect to the creators of a movie. And did you realize the end credits were much shorter than the ones by Hollywood movies? VFX members who won the Oscar were only 35! No wonder the movie had such a short end credits.

In the beginning of the movie, you're seeing Godzilla in his proto form before his exposure to radiation. It's called a Godzillasaur. This concept was explored in the Heisei period (1990's) of Godzilla movies. The fish are from the deep sea that are being driven up by Godzilla as he rises from the depths. The fish are suffering from decompression which is where the doctor gets the idea to do the same thing to Godzilla, I believe. In this movie Godzilla gets roided up and mutated in that clip of the hydrogen bomb going off. The hydrogen bomb footage is from the Baker test on the Bikini Atol during Operation Crossroads in July of 1946. Godzilla Minus One brings him back to his 1954 origins as a anti-nuclear and anti-nuclear war allegory. Godzilla is a walking nuclear reactor and weapon filled with rage at humanity for messing with forces they don't fully understand and can't fully control. Also, highly recommend Gojira (Godzilla) 1954 - the Japanese cut of the original movie (which starts the Showa period of Godzilla movies: 1954 to 1975). The Showa movies end with the Terror of Mechagodzilla. Heisei period Godzilla movies 1984 to 1995. It begins with the Return of Godzilla and ends with Godzilla versus Destroyah. Millennium period Godzilla movies 1999 to 2004. It begins with Godzilla 2000 and ends with Final Wars. Reiwa period Godzilla movies 2016 to current. It begins with Shin Godzilla.

The director stated that the regeneration ability was an aspect of the Godzillasaurus species. When it was hit with the atomic blast, the regeneration got kicked into overdrive so it healed so much that it developed more mass and grew to a large size. The bomb test location was just coincidental, nobody knew it was there at the time. It was interesting to see that Godzilla was actually injured every time it used the atomic breath.

Writer/Director Takashi Yamazaki is quite a historian. Referencing dates and props of historical facts. Depicting the survivors of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing of March 10th 1945", mankind's worst. More casualties in one night and lost in history to the Hiroshima Bomb. The Tokyo "Black Market" scene to introduce Noriko and Akiko to Koichi is brilliant. The Warships and Rear Propeller Plane are Historical fact. The "Takao" was involved in the attack of Pearl Harbor. Koichi's '37 Japanese manufactured Harley Davidson Motorcycle is a favorite discovery. Too many historical references to mention. Akiko's stuffed animal must be a historical toy too, lol. Noticed these things after a second viewing, ignoring the subtitles. Godzilla Minus One was awarded the Oscar in Hollywood California on March 10th 2024. Noriko looks into the camera, saying the last line, "Is Your War Finally Over". Great movie by Takashi Yamazaki, surrounding the Japanese Monster "Gojira".

The motorcycle Koichi rides is not a Harley-Davidson or its licensed Rikuo. The position of the hand shift is also different, and judging from the shape of the center rib fender, it may be a British car, or a pre-war Japanese car modeled after it. The model cannot be identified as details have not been announced. I also felt that they were intentionally making it unclear.

The film is called Minus One because post World War II left Japan in ruins. They had to start all over again from ground Zero. Then Godzilla shows up and even more wrecks havoc! Turning them from Zero to Minus One! Even further back than Zero! -OG

39:13 you both missed the black scar growing on her. So she's not out of the woods yet. This was such a great movie. The human characters were actually interesting. My wife doesn't even like Godzilla films, but she loved the human story of this movie.

Godzilla has always possessed the ability to heal quickly, Minus One just puts a big emphasis on it compared to other Godzilla films.

The J7W1 Shinden was a real Phantom anti bomber fighter, if the bombing of Hiroshima didn’t happen, this versatile aircraft might have been massed produced, and become an advantage for Japan.

22:34 I personally would have done the same thing, i would just stare at the mushroom cloud, cause even if you run you would die you cant out run that shock wave, the shock wave alone will cause instant death, and i'd rather get instant death than a slow painfull death
