Godzilla Minus One is the first Godzilla film released by Toho since 2016's Shin Godzilla. Minus One is a reimagining of the original 1954 Godzilla and takes the franchise back to its roots by exploring the harsh life of post-war Japan. The story follows Koichi Shikishima, a failed kamikaze pilot, who struggles with survivor guilt as a giant monster attacks the city.

Shikishima doesn't specifically mention Godzilla until he sees the deep sea fish again on the mine-sweeper boat, but there is a scene that shows he is still having nightmares about what happened on Odo island. He doesn't talk about Godzilla until it became necessary to tell his colleagues what happened. Even at that, the Captain sorta kinda doesn't believe Shikishima until Godzilla actually attacks the second boat. Then, the Captain is like, "Oh, shit! Let's get the hell out of here!"
@DMcGrann
@DMcGrann 5 ай бұрын
I agree. To me it made a lot of sense because who on earth would believe a story like that. It took a scenario where an educated scientist says he’s entertaining the possibility of a giant creature that can destroy a warship. And Shikishima specifically addresses Kenji with his account of Godzilla cause he thinks Kenji is most likely to listen then. And he only tells Noriko because he is finally breaking down emotionally.

When you read what the director was going for with the Ginza shots of Godzilla, you understand his movements. He's meant to look like a mountain moving through the city. Great conversation! I had an inkling that there was a failsafe on the plane, because there is a quick moment where the mechanic is looking at the plane's cockpit and we see that it is a German made seat. This was a great movie and loved that by the end we were rooting for the people to eliminate Godzilla. The moment that hit me the hardest is when they kicked off the operation in the bay and the '54 theme kicks on hard. All of the feelings ran through my body and had a huge smile on my face. I'm looking to find time to go see it a few more times. It's tough to break away with two young children. So will you and your buddy go see Minus One without color next week?

Thank you! It was a video of many firsts for me. First time showing my face, first time in the pod cast format with another person, first time publishing a video that was over 30 minutes! Yes, I was locked in from the preparation scene onward. So much so that I suspended all disbelief and was blind to some pretty obvious things that ended up happening. When the operation kicked off I thought it was the main theme from 1962 King Kong vs Godzilla? Was the 53 theme in there too? And, yes we are going back this weekend to check it out Minus the Color!

At the island he was thinking if I took the shot all of the men on the island would have lived. Me and my grandmother went to go see Godzilla Minus One (Minus Color) so i could see the 70th anniversary version of it, and it might've been more in touch with her generation, and we both loved it, up until we saw that movie her favorite was godfather 1, but it was so cool seeing the older generation and the newer generations enjoying a movie alike. Its now her favorite movie she's seen up to date, and she hated Godzilla because the first and only movie shes seen up until this one was Godzilla 1998 which left a bad taste on her mouth about the Godzilla franchise, so seeing her favorite movie becoming a Godzilla movie is just amazing to see as Godzilla fan, and was amazing to see myself, especially with all the mainstream trash there's been lately, i loved the monster verse movies, but seeing something that obviously had care and love put into it will always make them seem so much lesser compared to what's been made in recent years.

First off, let me say I am 54 years old. I've been a Godzilla fan my whole life. I impatiently waited for over a year for this movie to drop so I could go see it. I purposefully did not watch "spoiler" reviews like I normally do. Most of the time, I don't really care if I know the ending of a movie. I enjoy the journey. As I walked into the theater, I kept saying to myself, "Please, let it be worth the hype." When I got back in my car afterward, I sat there for a moment thinking about what I'd just seen, then grinned and said to myself, "Oh yeah, it was definitely worth the hype!" I've never understood my own fascination with G-man and I'm ok with that. I just enjoy the movies (although the campy kid-centric ones I'd rather just skip) and be in the moment.

To defend a point you brought up i think the reason godzilla moves slow and janky is because of other than just a throwback to the original, i think he moves slow and janky because he is essentially a burn victim. Remember he basically got nuked which will burn him and he's mutated and it probably hurts. When he was on the island he moved fine because he was in his natural look. Imagine trying to move fine after getting nuked. And even if that's not the case, it's probably also his sheer size. Being a creature a bit bigger than a t rex it makes some sense he could move fast but when he mutated into his giant form he's probably so big he's still getting use to his size. Part of me wishes the movie did say this with a character mentioning it but then again japan doesn't think like Hollywood where they treat their audiences like children and have to spell everything out to them. Still good vid just wanted to raise this point
@BatChainPuller
@BatChainPuller 5 ай бұрын
That's a good "in universe" explanation for the movement and one I could live with tbh. It just came off like an SH Monster Arts toy being limited in its joint movement. And to be fair it was only that ONE shot. Which is probably why it stood out so much to me and feels like a blemish on an otherwise perfectly executed digital monster.

After viewing, again, without reading the subtitles. Historical references to the wheel, in the background; one of mankinds 1st. To the historical references of the fire bombing of Tokyo, with a new war bomb, which killed more people than the Hiroshima Bomb. The Four Japanese warships are historical fact. Not to mention that rear propeller plane. All are noticed after ignoring the subtitles and just watching the film. How 'bout that historical Japanese manufactured Harley Davidson Motorcycle. This film is "Off the Hook!"

i saw the ejection seat coming a mile away. i think it was earlier in the movie someone said that they were buying ejection seats from the germans and then the movie did a close up of the seat and it had german writing on it. then the scene where tachibana is explaining the functions of the plane and then it suddenly cuts away as he says "oh... there is one more thing" and then you can see him pointing to the seat right where the german writing was. So much of this movie was predictable. as soon as i saw the experimental plane i was thinking "please dont fly that into godzilla's mouth that would be too cheesy" but when it happened in the movie, i loved it.... it was really weird.

Serious question. Would you tell people you saw a dinosaur? I feel like you're really reaching, dude. Everything made perfect sense. The guy doesn't feel worthy of being alive. He feels the guilt for losing the war & for everyone who died on the island. He's tormented. So with all of this going on, he's supposed to say "oh by the way I saw a dinosaur kill fellow soldiers & I was too much of a coward to to help". Come on man 😁

Remember I'm coming off watching every Godzilla movie ever made. And every Godzilla movie ever made (where Godzilla is either showing up for the first time, or returning after a very long hiatus) has witnesses that either try to alert the masses and are being suppressed or mired in bureaucratic nonsense or they are bed ridden, near catatonic. This is a series first that someone sees Godzilla and then goes about their business. However, I even said in the video that "I get it" he doesn't need the added stress of people thinking he is insane on top of being a coward and a failure.

I kinda agree with the gripe of not talking (or no scene) about Godzilla during the "peace" part. With the movie being about dealing with ptsd I imagine that the MC just didn't want to talk about it throughout his phase of getting over the war and building the family. I think maybe a remedy to that criticism could've been a brief interaction between MC and the Kid (Shiro) where the Kid asks about the war cause he feels bad about not being in it and Shikishima vaguely mentions Goji being a beast that no-one could overcome tying it into the trauma related to war.

The only Godzilla Movies I’ve seen are Godzilla Minus One, and Godzilla 2014, and that was great, but I just couldn’t bring myself to liking it as much as minus one. Minus One, is up there in my top five movies with Jurassic Park and Jaws.

I thought his rigid locomotion was on purpose on land. He's too big to actually exist with real world physics. He is obviously in great pain and anguish. When he attacks he is blind with rage and overcomes the pain and physics of the situation in short bursts of smooth action. So he's lumbering around when on land until he explodes in bursts of anger and then back to lumbering pain, goes into water for relief from gravity. I am onboard for a sequel, I don't think Toho needs a 3rd one off film in a row. I did also like how they used G's weird buoyancy (from most movies that he is in the water) that he is middle of the ocean acting like he's aground. I felt like that was sort of a riff / tongue in cheek look back at his movie history.

I felt like Shin Godzilla was perpetually in pain, but not necessarily this new Godzilla from Minus One. He seemed vicious and vindictive from the get go. On Odo Island before the bomb. His physics were definitely changed once he reappeared in Japan but I was never under the impression that he was in pain from it. He never seemed to use his Heat Ray unless in retaliation to a ranged attack. (The War Ship, The Tanks, and at the end.) In terms of Godzilla's buoyancy, I've always imagined him as a mega sized water fowl. A Mallard, Goose, or Swan, cross with a crocodile.

Good, bad, or other, I liked Godzilla '98. It wasn't a *bad* movie; it just wasn't a good *Godzilla* movie. If it had been called **anything** else, it would have become an awesome, cult-followed monster B-movie classic.

I LOVED the first 30 minutes of 98. The build up had Close Encounters of the Third Kind, late 70s Spielbergian vibes. But once Godzilla was playing Cat & Mouse in the city with piles of fish and helicopters I checked out. The quippy dialogue was also grating. Then they started cribbing heavily from Jurassic Park with their baby godzillas. It ended up being superficial dumb fun. I learned to enjoy it. But over the years I really REALLY started to appreciate the design.

Ripped from today's headlines. That's the great thing about silver screen monsters (large and small.) There is no shortage of metaphorical parallels to the real life monsters that we have to deal with and ones we become in order to protect ourselves.

About your theory of Godzilla being all in his mind - yeah, Godzilla was the closest to an afterthought as he's ever been, in this movie. Even the way he was animated. It gave me MechaGodzilla vibes. That being said, I still think it's a good movie. I just have no desire to watch it again.

I understand where you are coming from. Sometimes the biggest fans have the biggest expectations. I threw my "head script" out in the third act and just relished what was bombarding me. While it might not have been "as fun" as some of the other entries, it certainly was the overall best Crafted Godzilla film as a whole (to me anyway.)

To be fair, in the original they theorized that Godzilla was some sort of dinosaur remnant that was mutated by nuclear testing. And then they outright showed Godzilla's origin (as Godzillasaurus) during the time travel aspects of 1991"a Godzilla vs Ghidorah. So there is a history of that. Plus, it's a giant monster movie.

It was a limited release (in the US) but it was given about a month extension in theaters because of the numbers it was doing. The black and white version came to theaters and stayed about a week or two in some cities. Don't worry! It will probably be out on Bluray and streaming THIS YEAR.

Your gripes are trash, man. Your friend is right. Ppl think they know what trauma looks like, but that’s just bc they’ve mostly experienced it through movies. He played that role SO well. It’s not that he thought he was going crazy, at least not entirely. Like your friend says, he WOULDN’t be talking about it. When you’re in that type of environment, your subconscious doesn’t bother with alerting anyone bc at any given moment, anything can wipe out entire cities, so it’s not a priority, specially when knowing something the general public doesn’t might give you a survival advantage. And how can you call yourself a fan?! The movement you say was weird was a reference to Shin Godzilla- that’s how he moved! 😅 Watch it again, man. Be serious.
