I’m still amazed at the anti-war and even anti-government themes coming from an authentic Japanese Godzilla movie of all things. Fantastic movie

IDK if I'd phrase it as anti government, more like anti national peacocking over human life, I'm just not certain of a more succinct way to phrase that.

I hadn't been to a theater in many years (long before the kung-flu hit) except for work, I'm a cabinet maker & we did the cabinets for a remodel of an old single screen theater but I haven't been back since it started running again, but I've already been to see this movie twice.😁 Had to travel a bit cause that old theater isn't one that's showing it.

One thing I noticed and deeply appreciated was how the movie was able to use silence to build suspense. Too often now it seems movies try to cram a giant music score into every scene, and even if the score is good, it oftentimes just undercuts the tension. But this film knew when to be quiet and just let the silence (or at least slight ambiance) build tension, and it made Godzilla so much more terrifying. But when the score did play, it went HARD. Truly a cinematic masterpiece.

@@artsy_dragon_creations exactly! But even with parts like the boat chase, it only had the sound of slight ambience as we watched a tiny fisherman’s boat get followed by a monster capable of decimating cities. I took my cousin, my best friend, and at the last minute, his girlfriend as well to see it. It was her first Godzilla film and we all had a good time. Apparently several people did cry or tear up during some of the emotional scenes, my friend's GF included, and she said she saw a different couple have some issues, in that the guy's GF used his shirt as a hankee. I also lent my friend my copy of the OG Godzilla 1954 afterwards, as his GF had a genuine interest to see it. We made a Godzilla fan that day. Praise be to the god king of monsters bringing people together.

This movie is absolutely one of the best movies I’ve ever seen regardless of Godzilla, but his inclusion and characterization between his behaviors and design just make him a true terror and a visual spectacle. The scene where Koichi freaked out and had a moment where he was screaming everyone is a ghost and he’s already dead was for me actually almost too realistic. Honestly because I’ve felt such similar emotions to Koichi in my life, and I’ve had similar panic episodes and experiences, it felt very real for me with how he was clearly completely overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts in his panic

I convinced my brother and sister to watch this movie both of which are not Godzilla fans, my sister even made fun of me for wanting to watch this movie “Godzilla is for kids” but when we were in the movie the final act we both told each other “I don’t want them to die” and that made the experience so much better because this movie proved Godzilla isn’t just some kids movie, it’s a serious adult film with good characters. It’s not all about “I wanna see monsters fight” it’s a film that can even be a good movie without godzilla

Minus one is genuinlly my favorite Godzilla movie for the simple reason that, it went back to the true roots of what Godzilla was. Not just an allogory for war, or a sci-fi monster movie. A tragedy. In this age of movies we glorify the war, the heros both real and fiction. We cheer when the enemy is defeated we clap when the heros climb out of the rubble and fight on. Yet here we don't see that. We see the ordinary man the people who are burried in the destruction and dont get back up. The orignal Godzilla never glorified the destruction it made it tragic, it made every death on and off screen matter. The mechanics who we're never meant to fight. The mother looking for her children. The soldier that chose a "cowardly" escape over a "heroic" death. Godzilla symbolizes the tragedy of not just war but of being the victims of war. The ones back home who don't affect the outcome the ones turned to numbers when counting the bodies left behind. Even Godzilla a normal animal last of his kind soon to die, is turned into a unkillable creature made immortal and destructive by a weapon of a war he was never apart of. In essence we have a film about the victims who survived trying to live past their tragedies. Three orphans who rather than be stuck in their loss, grow past it. Forming a familly to endure and live. Superhero movies and action movies glorify destruction the explosions the high energy. Yet how often due we see the people on the sidelines? The people who worked in the destroyed buildngs, the familly that lives in that now burning house. Rarely do we see this. Yet Minus One shows this in a broad display of the tragedy of surviving a conflict you never truly had a choice in. In the end its these ordinary people who have to face Godzilla, survivors of a war they nearly lost everything in, being forced to stand up against somthing unbeatable. Fighting to live not to the death. In my opinion thats what makes Minus one such a beautiful film, the tragedy of losing everything in a war you didnt have a choice in, balanced with the hope of building somthing new with what you have left. The greatest Godzilla film in my opinion.

I really like the direction on how Toho directed two of their Godzilla solo movies Shin Godzilla and Minus One. They are like parts of the original 1954 Godzilla's heart and soul. Where Shin represents Godzilla's tragedy as a monster, just as Ishiro Honda said but at the same time the amount of pain he brought to mankind. Minus One here focus on the more human story of it and how much destruction and despair brought into people where Godzilla is clearly the main problem like a sort of natural disaster being brought to life.

I wasn't a huge Goji fan, but this movie...omg, I do recommend it heavily. One thing I noticed that is rather subtle(and probably just me reading too much into things) is the connection between Koichi and Godzilla. All the way back to when they first encounter one another on Odo Island Beach, it seemed like the two were weird reflections of one another, both scarred by war and angry about it, to the point of trying to kill whatever is causing their problems just to get the pain and trouble to stop. I swear, when Godzilla turned to Koichi's plane on the beach, he was looking right at Koichi, as if saying "Try it. You might actually have some balls if you do..." I swear they were tied together in some twisted fate shit, it's so cool, especially if you look back at prior scenes with that context in mind. Also, Godzilla was so creepy in this one and I love it!

Awesome video Jobby. I agree with most of your opinions and insights. I grew up with Godzilla, he was my hero as a kid and emotional support while I had cancer. So Godzilla is a huge part of my life more so than most other people. I tend to tear up anytime I see Godzilla in pain or especially when he dies….Godzilla vs Desotroyah is avoided at all costs. Minus 1 is up there for me but my favorite G movie is Godzilla vs Biollante. If you haven’t seen it I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a mandatory watch. Just make sure to watch 54 and 84 first. The score was great, the story was great, the acting was (mostly) great. I loved the design of Godzilla and you could see the disdain and utter disregard for human life in his expressions. The monsterverse movies are fun, sure, but this is what greatness looks like.

This movie easily slots into the top 3 Godzilla movies of all time, next to KotM and Shin. Everything about it is a 10/10. It's also the only Godzilla movie to make me fully break into tears, whereas KotM merely got me well up, maybe shed a single tear. Also, I never thought Toho would be able to top Shin's Atomic Breath, but they found a way to make it even more devastating. Combined with the Monarch show and the upcoming GvK sequel, it continues to be a very good time to be a Godzilla fan. 😁

Finally saw it this evening, took until the 15th before it released here in the UK, probably my film of the year and my favourite Godzilla film. I knew it was a great sign when it was approaching the third act and it hit me, I was at no point during the film waiting for Godzilla to show up. The human characters and their story was more than compelling enough to keep me invested, and that's what came first. Godzilla serves the story of the film, rather than the story relying on him as I feel some other films do. I don't have much to say about it that hasn't already been said, my jaw was on the floor for most of it. The Godzilla sequences I felt were all really well done, they were simple yet refreshing, a lot of the camera work I found to be really effective during moments where he's attacking something, whether it's up close shots of the carnage or longer takes holding on the damage he's inflicting. I also liked the use of the original roar, in Shin Godzilla there were times where I felt it sounded out of place as an older sound effect, here the slight adjustments they made really gave it the feel of a deafening horrifying thing to hear.

So yeah, amazing movie that’s so well done and pretty deep that’s great for not just Godzilla or movie fans, but something anyone can get into.

Like you Jobby this is the Godzilla movie I've been waiting for. The original 54 film is one of my all time favorite movies and while I do think there are some elements in it better than Minus One, it has been dethroned as my favorite Godzilla film. I really love a good emotional character driven story and Minus One handles that spectacularly. And also like you I am wondering just what the hell did they say to that little girl to make her cry like that cause god damn

Something that rattled me when watching this movie was just how much focus there was on the loss of life as a result of Godzilla. Seeing people get crushed by debris, seeing them get crushed under Godzilla's foot, seeing them get crushed in his jaws, getting blown to bits by his atomic breath, all of it is genuinely scary to see. Seeing the deaths from the perspectives of the people dying just holds more weight than it did before

I personally love the B-movie G-films, so Final Wars is definitely high on my list. G Minus One though is a completely different type of film. No camp, no comedy: this is a dead serious human drama. The human centered story was so moving and made me cry more than once both in sadness and in joy. It is now my favorite G-film and easily the best movie of the year.

When I heard about the film being released and saw the trailer twice, one being a teaser and then the other being a full trailer in theaters, I saw it was going to be released in 4D, originally I wanted to watch it in 4D because I thought it would be cool, it was cool and extremely shakey but as mentioned there was a deeper story in the film, it was a great movie in all and it does have the emotional feel.

Very rarely am I late to the party on a movie with such high critical praise, yet still find myself enjoying it despite my raised expectations. But when I say this movie blew me the fuck away, I mean that Shikishima is literally crying for me right now.

I will say, I wish the film was a bit longer. The timing of using music cues feel lovingly placed. Wasn’t expecting Godzilla Minus One to be that good but I’m happy it was. Shin Godzilla in 2016 is one of my favorite films and Godzilla Minus One is also in my favorites.

I really appreciate how the best godzilla media don't necessarily need him in there. I loved all the weird science shit in Singular Point and that barely had any kaiju, because you were always aware they were only a small tendril of something in a whole other dimension just taking the form of these kaiju. I know it was a bit obtuse at times, but hell, that's another good one.

It was a very refreshing Godzilla experience. I really like the monsterverse but its clear they mainly just rely on the monster fight scenes to draw in their viewers since the overall plot and human characters are poorly written or very basic. None of them really have any memorable moments. Godzilla minus one had incredible human characters that for me, were as equally engaging as godzilla. And the limited screen time of Godzilla was used very effectively, giving his appearances meaning and impact. Also just doing a good job of making Godzilla intimidating again which is something that i feel the monsterverse has lost since 2014. Hes very cool in those movies, but he feels more like an action star rather than the force of nature they try to portray him as, whereas minus one godzilla truly encaptured the fear of nuclear warfare and the horror that follows. All in all, minus one is a very well written and amazing movie, for both casual viewers and longtime fans of the character and franchise. Also, for me being a Godzilla fan since I was 3 years old in Australia, I never got to see any of the Japanese Godzilla films in theatres for obvious reasons. So seeing the classic toho logo that I fondly remember seeing on my parents old box tv and hearing THE Godzilla theme on full blast in theaters genuinely had a few tears of joy escape me. Made me feel like a little kid again.

Everything you said pretty much sums up my thoughts about the film. You _usually_ don't care about the human characters unless it's the 1954 film, but the movie did the drama better, since it doesn't give you last minute sympathy like Shin, or characters that became unsympathetic (most of the Monsterverse stuff). Godzilla personifies war itself, and for the first time, you _don't_ want to see any human character die. Yamazaki did well in portraying a reluctant kamikaze pilot who wants to live better for this film. It's my number one Godzilla film since the original, so I now how two most favorite film.

4:28 this was my only complaint. The overdramatic deliveries in some of the scenes came off as comical despite the depressing subject matter. Some more subtley would've been appreciated. Aside from that amazing movie.
