I agree. Godzilla is like a Yin Yang character. Yin (Silly side) / Yang (Serious side) Both sides are of the same character (Godzilla)

It reminds me how the Guardians of The Galaxy introduce when Rocket quarel to Peter saying: "Why you want to save the universe?" And Peter reply: "Because i'm the idiot that lives in it". Think about it, Godzilla is not just a monster stomping around stuff. He knows this world is his home and when any alien or unatural from earth, he will not hesitate to take them down like Ghidorah, Gigan, Mechagodzilla and any monster or machine threat him. Always happy to. Godzilla is really just such a character. Like there do not exist the words to accurately describe him because he just is all things. People tend to think they're dumb monster movies. I wholeheartedly disagree.

Honestly here are some things to know about MV Godzilla: Godzilla can form bonds and feel emotions from others. Mothra and Serizawa are the two main individuals proving this. He understands the importance and meaning of self-sacrifice, so when someone like Serizawa did it... it meant a lot to him. Especially since Serizawa reminded him of his ancient people, and called him "one of his own" in Dominion. He still remembers it even though it was years after KOTM. The look he gives Serizawa as well before he dies sacrificing, and the context behind the music that played implies it. He knew that Serizawa was going to die from the radiation in his temple, and so sacrifice was a lot more meaning ful for him. And he has somewhat of a soft spot considering he loved Rome's architecture because it reminded him off his old temple in KOTM. When he went to the Roman Colosseum he was very careful and didn't go though the buildings, but instead going by the river. It's the same with how he goes in the colosseum as carefully as possible to not destroy it. Hell, he legit went back there in the ending for GxK. Kong describes Godzilla's and Mothra's connection "like a family." He also recognized that Mark Russel and his group were with Serizawa. It wasn't because he was going to deal with them or something. From the credits in KOTM, Godzilla stopped a fight between two Titans because they were in human cities. One thing I will say is that Godzilla is not going to tiptoe around every human and shit when he is fighting Ghidorah or something. He will sacrifice the lives of a few to save the lives of many. But that doesn't mean he doesn't care. Godzilla's morality and view is much different than us humans, but he still very much has emotions.

@@MaxisAllosaurus You can find and read the MV Comics Online. Well, besides Godzilla x Kong The Hunted. Some more fun facts: Godzilla loves whales Rodan is likely not an adult, and is in-fact growing. Kong reminds Suko of his young self. Godzilla is 3-5 million yrs old. Ghidorah would have killed all of the Titans after all was said and done. Shimo trapped Ghidorah in ice after Godzilla beat him. Suko is Skar's son. At the end of GvK, a nice detail is that Godzilla wasn't looking at Kong but the axe! You can see the axe reflecting on his eyes.

Oh, that's good to know. I'll have to get looking. I do wonder how Skar was able to get Shimo, since a Kong drove Godzilla from his lair in the inner earth before he punished all the kongs, there's a lot of blank space in the timelines I'd love for them to fill. And the very subtle implication that Godzilla is still growing, since the Axe was made (presumably) from the thighbone of the Godzilla whose dorsal plating was used, that must have been one massive Godzilla. Which also leads me to thinking Godzilla isn't the last of his kind.

Godzilla is such a great character because he can be all of those things a hero, a neutral anti-hero/guardian of nature, a villain, a protector and a destroyer. that is why we love him. that and a giant atomic fire breathing dinosaur is badass.

I think antagonists and protagonist more than villain and hero. Hero and Villain assigns he's 'good or evil', which are concepts Godzilla was made to be above, not that he doesn't do villainous or heroic things from our perspective, but more of we can't really fully comprehend his motived and his reasons. Only observe and live with the consequences. And that's what makes is such a great series, and even greater character.

@@MaxisAllosaurus i agree with that, i was just giving a simplified list of roles he has filled throughout the very long list of media that the Big G-man has been in since his creation. Also nice showing that prequel bit where he was living down there with others in a family group. wish they hadn't cut that out (Though i think it was still hinted at in the original Japanese cut of the original film and the novelizations by Shigeru Kayama.) because it adds another layer of tragedy to the already tragic character. cause when you think about it. humans that have survived nuclear bombs had other humans to lean on for support and shelter. while the 1954 Godzilla had nothing left to live for except for revenge on humanity. as you said in the video, he was just as much a victim as the people he was harming.

Yes. I think that it not being present also has something to do with the Theater Program, filming something like that would be both more expensive, needing multiple Godzilla suits, as well as it wouldn't have the same shock value of the opening showing the ship being destroyed.

Godzilla is the rare instance of a character who is extremely versatile, and I do wish him well on the rest of his future, we got the dark and beautiful minus one, the cinamtic and epic GXK, and also silly little romps of Chibi Godzilla here on YT. Really great character!!

Agree, but I think part of what makes it present less like that is things like the handshake, and some of the general choreography of the actually teamwork itself. It's a bit of a separation of actions and motives that can get a bit muddied. But I do agree.

@@MaxisAllosaurus I think stuff like that makes sense as a continuation of what we saw in the Ghidorah movies and vs Gigan and a leadup to Zone Fighter, vs Mechagodzilla, and (in universe) Destroy All Monsters: he became more agreeable to working with other Kaiju/giants and better at coordinating with them

Yes, but there is also a difference between Kaiju and humans, Rodan and Godzilla are similar, and likely sense a sort of kinship with their shared experiences at humanities hands, same of Anguirus. By DAM he seems more 'you don't bother me, I don't bother you', especially after in Astro monster, he did get freed from the alien's control by humans. So there is an element of good will, but not complete forgiveness.

This is why I think James Gunn is a great fit for an American adaptation. Hearing Minus One described as a something with a sense of humor somewhere between Jaws and Bong Joon-ho’s The Host, while having a powerful emotional core and incredible sincerity, and ALSO bringing things back to a genuinely pretty horror-adjacent space, and ALSO still being a thrilling spectacle movie besides that, the first tight in my head was “wow, this is exactly the kind of tonal juxtaposition that’s right up my alley”. And it did turn out to be one of my favorite Godzilla movies despite preferring movies where Godzilla isn’t so much the villain. And when I think of a modern American director that ticks all of those boxes across a whole body of work, let alone within a single movie, it’s absolutely Gunn. When I think of a director who could present Godzilla with my preferred dosages of pathos, charm, and fear, it’s Gunn. Shame he’s too busy being DC’s new Head Guy, he’d put out a great Monsterverse entry I’m sure of it. Especially they got Seamus McGarvey behind the camera again, that 2014 movie has such a spectacular sense of where the camera ought to be.

I never thought about that with James Gunn, I'd only seen him with Guardians of the Galaxy, but you do make a good case. I'm really looking forward to seeing his Superman, as much as some might malign it. Now that you've mentioned it, I would like to see what he'd be able to do. For movies like these, you need people with a love for making movies, and a love for the source material. Not people looking for just a paycheck as it seems some other studios do. For Future MV films, I hope they keep it nice and tight on each monster, solo films for Rodan, Mothra, more for Kong, really flesh each other out, since they have somewhat seemed to leave Godzilla behind in some cases.

@@MaxisAllosaurus definitely more solo movies for the other Kaiju, if I have one critique of the MV it’s how small the universe feels. We got two Godzilla movies, one Kong movie, and then it’s just been those two teaming up ever since. And then of course the show, which I personally loved. It’s all great fun, but we’re getting really narrow looks at the world. A Mothra solo movie that was about bringing her back would have been great. Could have even called it “Return of Mothra”. Really delve into the mythology of the character and the more mystical side of that universe. And we’ve got all of these unseen or underused Kaiju-idk if any of the Legendary OCs could carry a movie, but I wish we could see more of them. The MUTOs and Skullcrawlers were such cool antagonists, and Tiamat’s weird orchid-dragon design would have been so captivating to spend more time with.

Very much agree. I think the biggest issue of the MV is timeline, movies take a quite long time to make, and hesitancy to put out too many due to what we're seeing from Marvel, a dilution of quality, and MV execs are probably worried about oversaturation. But they're missing the root cause of that problem. Though it is hard to argue with the CGI generation taking as long as it does. As much as I love minus one, his CG is nowhere near the same level as MVGoji. If it was more movies, but a reduction in quality, or longer production time for a better spectacle, I'd take the longer time. But I think they can also afford to speed up production, not a yearly release like they used to do, but not a one every three years release like we have now. Maybe split the difference of one every 18 months. there is a project on this I have in the works, so can't give away too much.

Oh my lord finally someone who gets it, this whole video is such a breath of fresh, ever since Minus one, pure nay sayers who honestly don't really know much about the franchise have come crawling out the wood work not having a clue on where Godzilla has been coming. Truly the most versatile character in cinema history. Please share this video to the minus one D riders so they can understand, and not come in and sabotage an excellent franchise. Baning video❤🙏

Your words mean the world to me. Minus one is a good movie for what it is, but not every Godzilla movie should be like it. I can appreciate it for what it is, but I do have issues with it. People latching onto it while shunning the rest of the series shows they don't understand the character, or even the Franchise, because even Minus one itself doesn't. Something on that in the works Movies like it have their place, but it shouldn't be ALL that there is. If all we got were Minus Ones, the series wouldn't survive. Just as if every Movie was say Godzilla Vs Kong, or New Empire, It wouldn't survive. It was the fact he has BOTH movies of that nature that he's lasted 70 years. Too much factionalism exists, and too many tourists who only jumped on after seeing Minus One is trying to tear the series apart. We need to bring things into a better future.

I was one of the fans to fight for the non serious legendary Godzilla since the beginning and I’m happy to see videos finally start backing that up!

Serious Godzilla and Silly Godzilla are two sides of the same coin, you can't really have one without the other. Well, you can, but in doing so, something is lost, a part of the characters identity is lost. But that's not to say you can't have absolutely spectacular over the top monster fights, and not have that core still be there. Like GMK, love the movie, but there is no sympathy for Godzilla there, and Godzilla Vs Megalon, while it does follow his character development he has been going through, it does seem a bit odd Godzilla's willing to work with humans after all humans have done to him. Ghidorah the Three headed monster actually struck both perfectly, yes, there's silly moments in it, like the Fairies translating scene, but that scene also gives some of the deepest and clearest insight into Godzilla as a while that really helps nail home we created Godzilla. That just as we have suffered his wrath, he's also suffered just the same.

I think the best way to break down most Kaiju movies in terms of their stories, and I think part of what allows Godzilla to be such a flexible character, is that most kaiju movies actually have two protagonists: a human protagonist and a Kaiju protagonist. The human lead is generally the character you unambiguously root for while the Kaiju lead drives a lot of the plot action, whether through destructive acts or combat with another monster

I've always liked the theory, supported by those officially-sanctioned fan films, that the more unambiguously heroic Godzilla of the late Showa period and Heisei-era spinoffs like _Godzilla Island_ or the aforementioned fan films, is actually Minilla/Junior all grown up. Having been raised without a reason to hate or think little of humans, this next generation Godzilla is a more proactive, protective figure compared to his grumpier father. Otherwise I am cool with whatever take a movie goes with, what bothers me is people who think Godzilla can only be one thing. Preaching to the choir, I guess.

Well, the Heisei Era Godzilla, and the Showa Godzilla are two different timelines, it is a very nice idea. I feel like that'd be an interesting idea if they explored that in a monsterverse film. Because one thing about MV Godzilla is that he is so powerful, it might be hard to keep making more plausible monsters that can rival him, and a 'little' Godzilla would fix that.

Except for the 1998 Zilla, I believe that there is no version of the character that is better or worse than the other. It doesn't matter if he's depicted as a terrifying metaphor for the horrors of nuclear warfare, pure evil, a silly hero, a terrifying yet sympathetic character, a raging beast in pain, an embodiment of nature, Godzilla is ALL of them, and THAT'S what makes him so good. He's a character that can fit into almost anything and still work. He's honestly become one of my favorite characters in fiction, a character so versatile, that many have embraced and accepted this trait. Long live the king.

The Netflix Series, Singular Point, Hannah Barbera cartoon, and that's not even getting into we kinda had to rush through his characterizations in each of the classic timelines and monsterverse.

I've been watching these movies since I was 6 years old. I came for the monster fights, I stayed for the stories. Tourists are scum, I don't like to talk ill, but when peopel are trying to twist a series into something it isn't that's both wrong, but also disrespectful. Especially when there's 70 years of history showing them wrong.

So, great vid. I wonder if it is too long and could have been broken down into multiple 10 to 16 minute videos.

That was one of the options. The only issue with that is uploading multiple videos is they need to be spaced out heavily for something like this, and if broken up, people might not see all the parts ad get the full picture. But I do plan to make smaller videos exploring each one more in depth because there is just way too much to cover.

There's much more nuance in these films, especially if you watch them in order. It was hinted heavily in '54 that Godzilla HAD a family & may have lost then in the A bomb that mutated him. In Rodan, it turns out there were TWO of them, & one was mortally wounded by the military. The other CHOSE to die with its mate in a volcano. Fast forward to Ghidorah, Rodan wakes, finds himself alive & alone, & makes a b line to Godzilla. To die. Godzilla has no idea what's going on. He's been fighting with humans for the longest time, then a giant gorilla, then a moth & her kin, & now this bird. It's not until one of the Mothras he faught before tries to talk that he realizes Rodan's story. He lost his mate. Godzilla lost his family. They're buds now. But Mothra wants them to help the humans. Rodan agrees cause he might die & join his mate & Godzilla does it cause HE wants to be the one to punish humanity. Later, Godzilla dances on Planet X after learning he's much lighter on that world. Feeling joy for the 1st time in a very long time began his turn to the good side. In Ebirah, Godzilla officially becomes a good guy. Mirroring a human character who began the film a criminal & ends it a hero.

Amen. The movies have Godzilla as a character, he isn't just a monster. There was a very clear marching on of his character development, and especially the Showa films don't deserve the campy reputations they get. There's actually a lot of seriousness in those older movies, it's just the fighting gives it that reputation.

I'm still relatively surface-level as far as Godzilla media goes (having only seen Minus One, the G-Earth anime trilogy and the Legendary movies [minus GxK]), but this was a great video on him! And also, I can't stop laughing when you showed clips from the Showa rubber suit era; he was such a silly goofball back then! 😆

Thank you, glad I can help introduce a bit of the older elements to people. The rubber suits were used even well into 2000s, Godzilla Final wars, Toho's last movie before he Monsterverse in 2004 still used the suits. Many of the older movies actually did have a lot more seriousness going for them than the goofy suits would let on. Got something on that actually in the works.

Broadly speaking, Mothra is generally defeated by Godzilla in movies they face off, her skills are generally more range oriented, and tends to be more of the fragile speedy character. There's some incarnations she's much more able to handle a fight, but in the movies they face off, Godzilla generally wins unless Mothra's got help, original Godzilla vs Mothra, Mothra's killed and the tagteam of the larva beat him, in Battle for Earth Mothra and Battra beat Godzilla after she got beat one on one in Imago, GMK And SOS she's beaten by Godzilla, and in SOS it's the larvae and Kiryu together beat Godzilla. Other than Horror Of the Deep, where It's more of Godzilla sees Mothra flying over head, and tries to fight her, but she just knocks him down and flies away. Now Mothra Leo, different story, but those are different continuities, and in Final Wars they are allies and don't really fight one another. Monsterverse Mothra's also Godzilla's ally, but there's more of a respect relationship there where she will call Godzilla out and it was less a fight. We also haven't seen all of her abilities there yet, so that's a to be determined as well.

Yes, but it was more for comedic effect Zombies shorter than conglomeration of wrathful ghosts, while keeping the point of it being undead in some manner

I have some projects in the works relating to that. I wasn't sure how well this channel would do, but seeing as how it's starting to take off, more of those ideas it's time to kick into maximum overdrive.
