Agreed. Although isn't scientific yargan jargan part of the franchise as a whole? I mean the hair thin wire that's 10x stronger than steel cables? A chemical bomb that dissolves most organic tissue? Turning a skeleton into a dna responsive robot? Successful reverse engineering of technology almost a thousand years ahead of our time?

There are some cool bits like the appearance and even the characterisation of Jet Jaguar (until they infantilised for some bizarre reason reason towards the end) and Anguirus looks pretty cool, though we unfortunately never get to see one fight Godzilla, and the precognition thing is a bit odd. Manda is there as well, (though the spindly red limbs might be turn off for some) and Salunga is probably the closest we’ll ever get to Gabara being cool (by mixing him with Baragon). The Rodans look too much like 2010’s interpretations of pterosaurs (prehistoric planet they ain’t) and the Meganula/Megalon/Kumonga things are really just there to be faceless drones fro JJ to slaughter. The animation for 2-D and 3-D segments is pretty good, but I can only take you so far if the audience isn’t engaged with the story. Apparently there were mistranslations for the English dub, which really did not help with the exposition, especially since time travel is such a touchy subject since it’s basically impossible and there’s a lot of ideas of how it works. Not to mention that the vast majority of Godzilla Ultima screen time was spent referencing Shin Godzilla. There is also the fact that our main characters never actually meet each other and hold towards the end of the season, which really hurts the characterisation. Hopefully we get some clarification in season 2, even though the idea of Retro Kiryu should be treated with cautious optimism at best.

I definitely got the feel of "I have this freaky steampunk-apocalypse-with-a-Japanese-mythology-twist story that I want to tell, but nobody's interested in making it. Maybe if I hastily throw some Godzilla monsters in there, some studio will pick it up . . . ."
@kellenwong1321

Not sure how it's steampunk: the technology is either modern or futuristic.
@Beedo_Sookcool
@Beedo_Sookcool 2 жыл бұрын
@@kellenwong1321 I'm not saying the series IS steampunk; I'm saying it FEELS like it started out as a steampunk story that nobody wanted to produce, so they slapped some quantum-y mumbo-jumbo and Godzilla-esque monsters onto it to get a studio to back the project. It's like how "The Crystal Star" feels so much like a "Star Trek" novel that didn't sell, so Vonda N. McIntyre just replaced key Enetrprise crew with some vaguely analogous "Star Wars" characters and got LucasFilm to publish it. The Jet Jaguar mech, especially, gives me a very "eccentric old inventor cobbled it together in his garden shed" feel.
@kellenwong1321
@kellenwong1321 2 жыл бұрын
@@Beedo_Sookcool While the science angle could definitely have been handled better, I wouldn't call it completely nonsensical. For example, singular point and orthogonal diagonalization/diagonalizer are real mathematics terms. A singular point in math is essentially a graph that intersects itself and in quantum physics it is where different dimensions intersect. Orthogonal diagonalization is essentially a method for solving matrixes, or in the anime's case, manipulating higher dimensions by using a MATRIX of higher dimensional particles.
@kellenwong1321

@@kellenwong1321 I'm aware of the real-world basis of their technobabble (I know WAY more mathematicians than any biologist has any right to, most of whom deal with topolgy and matrices), but tying it to giant rubbery monsters is where it all falls down. And if you'll check my original post -- note that it hasn't been edited in any way since I posted it -- it says: "I definitely got the feel..." FEEL. Right there.

It’s a theme with the animated Godzilla stuff at this point, isn’t it? Trying to appeal to the verysmart crowd and pretend there’s some kind of deeper intellectual stuff going on, but in reality it’s just word salad. It’s something for those kids who spent all their young lives being told they were above average intelligence but then grew up to be in the average intelligence bracket that didn’t want to ket go of being smart. Now they can smirk, push up their glasses, and write an 8 thousand word essay on why “you just won’t get it because you’re not as smart as me” all the while inside they know that they don’t understand it either because it’s a confusing mess of words strung together to give the appearance that there was more thought to it. I was told the same thing about the Godzilla Earth series, it’s not that it’s bad, I just didn’t understand the deep character nuances and messaging of the movies when they were just a bootleg of AOT.

I feel like I’m the only one who enjoyed the science stuff in the show in addition to the monster action. There was a nice mystery element as to what it all meant; it made me think and theorize - engaged me. But I’m also a weirdo who enjoys going out and looking up physics stuff when I get bored, so I guess I’m an outlier whose opinion doesn’t matter.
