Young Ichiro is a lonely boy who spends most of his time daydreaming about Godzilla. When Ichiro befriends Minilla, the two find they have a lot in common.

For starters, they like Godzilla. But each of them also is tormented by their own unique bully named Gabara. For Ichiro it's a schoolboy, but for Minilla, it is a giant monster with the ability to adminster electric shocks! The two characters learn from one another and eventually find the courage to face their tormentors.
While consisting of a large amount of stock footage, the film does have a number of original and memorable scenes as well. As for the main villain of the film, Gabara has yet to return to the screen. However, the monster does have a following of sorts due to the its unique design. The film is also known as "Godzilla's Revenge," but while Godzilla may teach Minilla to "fight its own battles," the King of the Monsters doesn't seek revenge on anything in the film.

Movie is actually kinda interesting these days for the glimpse it gives us into the life of a latchkey kid in Japan half a century ago.

True, though no amount of historical relevance or academic beard-stroking and monocle-adjusting can excuse the films numerous basic writing failures, poor production values, and lousy acting; I get so sick of people using the interesting stuff this film does contain (much of which was likely unintentional or accidental) to try and defend a fundamentally weak and deficient movie.

@@RocStarr913 I will contest that Godzilla vs. Megalon, despite objectively being dogshit, was so bad it was good; it at least was rarely boring, we got two new kaiju (counting Jet Jaguar) out of it, and I actually think the big end fight is one of the better ones in the Showa era, and not just for the anti-gravity kick. All Monsters Attack, by contrast, is offensively bad, not just for the stock footage and atrocious pacing, but because it flubs at storytelling so hard that it presents its target audience of young Godzilla fans as psychopaths, tells a genuinely disturbing tale of a kid in crappy circumstances largely by accident, and ends with him objectively WORSE off than before and having become a bully himself, which also ruins any sort of aesop the film may have wanted to convey.

@@triplehate6759 Your take is valid. Home Alone, which many have said is similar to All Monsters Attack, also seems to paint a very psychopathic child character in Kevin McCallister in trapping his home for the burglars.

i find the contrast between western Godzilla fans who think this movie is the worst thing ever made and Japanese Godzilla fans who have no issue accepting this movie as a part of the series both incredibly interesting and amusing

It’s not bad of a movie; Ishiro was getting constrained by the studio and made a solid movie regarding overcoming your fears and growing up. Sure it’s not action packed or whatever the issues are, but it’s not terrible.

I can’t hate on this movie. I know they had restraints on it and there’s a lot of stock footage. However I totally related with Ichiro and how he would daydream about Godzilla. Also love the final battle.

I honestly think that this could have been done a bit better with the whole bully aspect. Ichiro gets harassed by his bullies lead by "Gabara" (the lead bully has another name I know I just don't remember it 😅) at school constantly even to a point where he's chased home by them. One day Gabara and his gang confront him and force him into a dare by moving a statue in a shrine but what they didn't know was that from moving said statue from the shrine they had awoken a terrifying Oni that feeds off the fear of the ones that come in contact with it also named Gabara and Ichiro is his first victim. Ichiro begins to get nightmares from Gabara which makes the demon stronger. Gabara then makes his way to Monster Island and learns about Godzilla so he enlisted (or rather brow beats) Kumonga, Kamacuras, Ebirah, and the Giant Condor into working for him to take Godzilla out while he makes Minilla (who was learning from his father how to be brave) his next victim. Ichiro (who was still having nightmares about both Gabaras) gets some advice from his neighbor (the toy maker that checks in on him) and he hears about the nightmares he's been having and how they've taken a toll on him. The toy maker then tells him that he has to be brave much like Godzilla and that he wouldn't back down. Ichiro then takes his wise words to heart. Back on Monster island Godzilla hands out more fades than Steve Harvey's personal Barber causing the four kaiju to piss off. And after several moments of being attacked by Gabara, Minilla finally stands his ground and tries to fight him (with middling results but he still continues on) Godzilla then arrives to see Gabara electrocuting his son and fires his breath at the monster getting him to let go. Minilla the takes this opportunity to bite Gabara and gets him angry enough to try and swing at him wildly missing every hit. One of Gabara's punches causes a large rock to get dislodged and fall on to Minilla's tail which causes him to fire off his own atomic ray point-blank at Gabara's face which causes him to fall back in pain. Godzilla goes over to congratulate his son for standing up to his tormentor. However, Gabara tries to cheap shot Minilla only to hit Godzilla instead. Which results in Gabara catching a giant green-ass beating from the Monster King (with Minilla's help of course) both kaiju blast their heat rays at Gabara chasing him off once and for all. Back in Japan Ichiro before heading for school goes over to the shrine and speaks to the person who sweeps around the area and tells him that he was the one that moved the statue that held Gabara in the first place (due to Gabara pressing him) and promises to help out after school. Unfortunately Gabara and his gang follow him and try to harass him again but Ichiro wasn't going to run away this time and he and Gabara get into a fight with Ichiro winning but he as well as Gabara and his gang get in trouble with one of the teachers. But the person who worked at the shrine shows up and tells the teacher as well as Ichiro and Gabara's folks about what's going on. So along with Ichiro who volunteers to help clean up the shrine after school, the Bullies are punished and are forced to helpevery day as well Ichiro as well as Minilla finally faced their fears and Gabara is once again imprisoned forever. But that's just my idea 😅

Am improvement over the ending we got, at any rate; Ichiro becomes as bad as the bullies he was standing up to, the film ends by flubbing its own Aesop.

Funny how they do a monster roll call in the trailer but in the actual film only three of the monsters actually play a role in the story, the rest are just stock footage.

Not sure about STOCK, but yeah... bit parts. the idea of Monster Island needed a big cast to really sell the concept, but... most of it's not really used.

Sadly there is too much stock footage in this film. That’s the main complaint I have about this film. Stock footage aside its not a bad movie.

It was likely to deceive the children into thinking this was going to be another Destroy All Monsters, which was the preceding film.

Is it me, or do I want to see Gabara in the MonsterVerse as well? My guess is that MonsterVerse Gabara should be the inspiration for legends of oni in Japan (especially Shuten-Douji), and his appearance should also have elements from Singular Point's Salunga.

Oh yeah Gabara was a cool design. Just explain the weird lumps as what Gabara uses to generate however many thousands of volts he needs to electrocute Godzilla. Because, yes, actually Gabara's electric grapple hurts like HELL apparently. As melee fighters go in kaiju films, Gabara was an impressive showing. Just... don't try doing that to Ghidorah.... especially not Monsterverse Ghidorah.

Many people hate this movie, but I felt the need to give everyone a friendly reminder that: this movie was aimed at a very young audience not for grown adults who view media in a more critical light, and secondly, was made on a very low budget, many people forget about that when talking about this movie.

I honestly never understood the hate for this one. Yes the dubbing is atrocious in the English but at this point Godzilla was for kids. Its a fun little romp thru monster island even if its just in the imagination of a kid. The weirdest part for me is that Gabara is the only kaiju that doesn't have a tail

Poor Ookondoru. The poor bird didn't get listed among the other monsters at all in the trailer. Even worse, official listings for the monsters that appear in the movie label it as a separate monster entirely - the "Giant Eagle". What was Toho thinking in that regard? It's clearly the same bird from Ebirah: Horror of the Deep.

This film does get a bad rap for reasons I totally understand but that's why i love about it its weird and dumb but fun I liked the American dub better cause of the soundtrack true some of the soundtrack are from the japanese original but there were some new songs from this guy name Ervin Jereb like that cool opening theme

I caught this movie on an episode of "Svengoolie" when he was marathoning a bunch of "Godzilla" movies. This is definitely, in my opinion, the worst of all the Godzilla movies. While the idea of a movie focusing on a Godzilla fan and his daydreams is interesting, it really suffers from a terrible script.

@@HKtraidon Hmm i agree that it was weak in many regards, but... Gabara was a great idea. Also given the way the events work out in-universe... some of the flaws... just... work. I mean, if it's a kid's daydream... you can write off some of the inconsistencies by saying the kid got things wrong.
