Today we see what we can find in the r/BeardedDragons sub-reddit. With everything from obese dragons to lizards that ate each others tails and... well each other... there's a lot happening. There's also a very common pattern of reptiles involuntarily hanging out with other animals.

I kinda figured out what the problematic oweners of reptiles, or ANY animal for that matter, have in common. They either anthropomorphize their animal and tells themselves that the animal likes it because they themselves like it, or they are SO ignorant and uneducated about what could actually harm their animal that they try to justify their abuse by saying stuff like it's either cute or cool.

Man, I agree with this so much. Not really bearded dragon related but pet related: I have a small, double-coated dog, and my parents keep on insisting on shaving them because from their perspective, “it’s like wearing a fur coat every day!” Not knowing, or acknowledging that double-coated breeds regulate their temperature with the thick coat. Whenever I tell them this, they keep saying: but she’s so hot! I had to put up with a spotted shaved nugget way too often, and seeing her tremble in the cold was heartbreaking.

There are some areas where rehoming fees do work. For example, when people are rehoming a pet rat and want to make sure they're not used for snake food, pricing the rat above what feeder rats generally go for can ensure that the person getting your rat probably wants them as a pet. It doesn't guarantee that they'll go to a *good* home, but if you give rats away for free some people might go 'oh, free snake food'. For animals that aren't generally used as feeders, though, I'm not sure how they help.
@misosoup79
@misosoup79 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. That is one way. The other is to prevent "flipping." Adoptable, cute pets being rehomed for free are sometimes picked up by flippers, who will turn around and post the same animal for "rehoming" with a sob-story of why they are forced to find a new home... and they will charge a "rehoming fee." These are greedy people that love to prey on the emotions of pet lovers to make a little cash.

Man, I have a beardie and a cat too. If the beardie is out, the cat is locked in another room. I had to buy a roll of chicken wire and make a fence to put on top of his terrarium to keep the cat from jumping on top. It's on a tall table that fits almost perfectly, so there's no space for the cat to jump up on the table. I know my cat wants to, and definitely would, try and eat him if her ever got the chance. His terrarium even has a lock on it now. It's a fortress! I can't believe people who let their reptile out with their cats and dogs.

I slightly disagree about rehoming fees. I think it's true that they don't guarantee a good owner. But it isn't entirely useless as it deters severely fucked up people that would use the animal for non-pet purposes just because it is free or very very cheap. For example, my town has had issues with rehomed cat/dog serial killers. Rehoming fees don't solve the problem entirely, bit greatly reduce the frequency of it.

I've always thought of "rehoming fees" as a euphemism for selling- it makes for good marketing, since it feels very caring and personal. Even though selling reptiles is common and normal, I can imagine someone being driven to the pathos of it. Like in a, "it would be my pleasure to prove to you that I have the finances to take care of this pet!" vs "Yeah, I can fork over a few bucks". I definitely agree with the deterrent of animal abusers, while a very small percent- but I'm sure it's much larger purpose is effective business haha.
@harpoonlobotomy
@harpoonlobotomy 2 жыл бұрын
@@hanthonyc At least in terms of cats/dogs here, rehoming fees include initial vet checkups, chipping, desexing and vaccinations (and the animals already need homes when they first enter the system, they're not bred for sale), so there's an inherent priority of animal welfare over straightforward 'selling'; most of those fees go to the costs of fostering, vet care etc vs the profit priority of old school pet shops. Of course someone could just relabel their traditional animal sales to 'rehoming' to take advantage of the ethical perception but that's why people need to look into who they're adopting animals from.

The fact they thought it was a good idea to post it on Reddit, the lizard it ate was wild-caught, and why feed it that when veggies literally exist. Like, you should never feed your pet reptile something that's wild-caught. The only pet I give wild-caught things to is my pet Venus fly trap, and that's because it's a freakin' PLANT. So, I really don't understand why there's a problem with feeding a ball python (vastly less intelligent than a rat) to a bigger snake? Maybe because it's harder to kill a snake than a rat? Like rats will die easily in a co2 chamber in minutes while snakes would need over an hour if not more to actually suffocate. So you kinda need to euthanize them with a hit to the head usually which isn't as easy to do. They're also harder to breed than mice or rats.

it would be fine if the snake was humanely killed, but i saw a snake discovery video on how hard it is to do that. you cant use a co2 chamber bc apparently that doesnt really work(?), you cant freeze them bc they would feel every single inch of their body slowly icing up (its basically torture), you cant behead them bc their nerves would send pain signals to their brains hours after death (again torture). the only solution they gave in the video was braining them. like just smashing their head in with a hammer or something. ig a poison could work too, if it did the job quickly and painlessly. but i dont think you would want to feed a poison-injected snake to another snake. its harder to breed ball pythons too, so they would be much more expensive than a rat. i dont think its very sustainable, but if it was done humanely i dont think there's anything wrong with it.

It's really hard to neglect a bearded dragon if you just put a LITTLE thought into it. Idk why these people would ever think of caring for a life without knowing everything they need. It's horrible. Calypso, my beardie is a very happy dragon. She's got a bioactive cage so cleaning requirements are minimal and mealworms breed in the soil so she can naturally catch live prey. I also premade a blend of cricket powder, veggjes, some fruits, and some vitamins. Baked it, broke it into pieces, and froze it. It’s wonderful that you care so much for your little chicken strip! But honestly, it’s so hard to neglect a reptile pet since they’re comparably so low maintenance than other types of pets. Give them a place to vibe, fruits and veggies and bugs, and clean their poop up. Do a bit of research and a bearded dragon is as happy as a clam!

Just wanted to share this somewhere. Recently me and my bf got a new beardie. We weren't planning on getting a rescue but that's what she turned into. She's a Hypo Translucent, she's 8 months old and is much much smaller (think barely the size of your palm) then my 5 month old Hypo. Her last owner bought her without her parents contest and knowledge, she was fed ice berg lettuce her entire life and lived in a small cage with sand and a cup for a hide We've had her for a couple weeks now and she's growing like crazy, she also LOVES broccoli and roaches. She wasn't handled a lot her whole life so she's angry and tries to bite but she's slowly getting better about being handled by me and my bf. Her name is Sunny and I love her

I just love the "can't afford vet, can't afford pet" saying Reddit spouts off all the time. I literally got told by r/dogs that I should not own a dog because I can't afford the thousands of dollars bill to take my dog to a behavior specialist. The behavior specialist in my area literally charged $600/hr and was the only one within a several hour drive. Like 99% of the world would not be allowed to own a pet if everyone followed all of Reddit's rules.
@kampfgeist7703
@kampfgeist7703 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. If you own a pet you should be able to afford basic care. Food, toys, check ups and vaccination, but you can't blame a person for not being able to afford 2000 dollars upfront if suddenly something really bad happened. Like the cost for something common like an ear infection is different to a car accident or cancer. The biggest example of this is the KZfaqr who owns a dog called Uso. Uso fell I'll from one-day to another and got paralyzed. He couldn't afford the treatment but thanks to a go fund me he was able to and he has done so much for his dog who couldn't go to the bathroom on his own or stand ECT ect. People who say 'if you can't afford the outages vet bill of a sudden problem than you shouldn't own a Pet' likely are hypocritos or rich people

Not being able to pay for ridiculous training bills is far from not being able to pay for basic care. It’s always a good idea to have an emergency fund but the bills can be extreme if you have special circumstances. $600 an hour is insane

Exactly. I have an emergency vet fund for my pets but if one of them ends up with cancer or something similar, I won't be able to afford it without depeleting all my savings. Vet bills can be extremely high.

The "can't afford a pet" issue is....tricky. On one hand, good keepers shouldn't be shamed if they ask for advice for a sudden emergency while having done their research, done good husbandry so far, etc. (esp. since vet bills in places like the USA are often astronomical depending on where you live and what animal needs help). BUT to not consider saving up for some basic vet care (even a few dollars put away each month can help a bit!) and to try praying away the issue rather than even considering an emergency vet visit is....well, not good. The animal suffers.
@kampfgeist7703
@kampfgeist7703 2 жыл бұрын
@@thejasminedragonmerchant6843 yes , I agree. You should be always have a found on the side and be able to afford more common vet bill for something like infected ears or UTI. I've always been lucky enough to afford treatments for my pets when they've fallen I'll but I'm always worried that i won't be able to afford a large cost up front just because here in the US prices are outrages. Hell i likely wouldn't be able afford teatment for myself if it was something really big

@@madiis18account you're right! I'd think a yabbie would be able to cause trouble too but I guess not enough. And in the wildlife care I've been told the live insects can eat their way out of the baby bird if they're too young...guess parents always make sure they're dead first. But the animal welfare regulations around cruelty (at least in nsw) do define 'animal' for cruelty law purposes as various vertebrates - and crustaceans but only at resteraunts where they're intended for eating? - and they stipulate with live feeding it's only not falling under cruelty laws when you can reasonably justify a predatory animal is otherwise refusing to eat. So the cruelty to prey is at least considered, but weighed up, on the whole.
