I have watched these videos for the last 5-6 years it’s always good for a refresher and they actually have something new for 2024. Hopefully 🤞🏻 I will actually be able to participate this year. Debating on whether to apply for a reduced price cow tag 🏷️ and then a pronghorn tag 🏷️ later in the year or do a deer 🦌 and pronghorn combo this year as my first hunt out west.

You are correct and I miss spoke on the allocation for elk, deer and antelope but I stand by what I said about the pref pt system. Getting started in the pref pt system is a mistake and you must understand the number of tags vs the number of people with points already in the system.

@@bryanclausen6624 Even with one point you have a chance, remember that a portion of the permits are randomly allocated so if you apply you have some chance to draw. A portion of the permits are guaranteed to the applicants that apply with the most points for any given hunt but like I said some of those permits are randomly allocated. Deciding what hunt(s) to apply for can be tough, but I would suggest using the Filtering tools in your Insider account like trophy potential, harvest success, season, and your maps (public land layer, unit layers) to decide what makes the most sense for you and your objectives.

So to get a preference point do you need to apply now or buy the point in July? The west as figured out that they can charge just about any dollar amount they want because the hunters are willing to pay. Talk about a complex drawing system 😂. Great video. Thank you.

Are there go hunt tools to help determine quality elk hunting habitat that is outside of wilderness areas. I would love a whole strategy article or video just around that. Is it only better for late season hunts when they drop elevation etc. I do a shit ton and research and as a none resident with the wilderness caveat I have no idea how to even approach this.
@GOHUNT

Great topic idea for sure! Let us put some thought around that and see if we can have Trail cover this as a specific article around researching habitat in non-wilderness areas. That being said, Trail did do this video last year about how to find the best elk habitat: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idyEl7Wpz6_Dm2Q.html And you have this one that dives into finding features on a map to look at: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb18oJyjl5qqYqc.html This is a great video Mark Livesay did for us: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJqZq85k3rq0qas.html Finally, this video on the Terrain Analysis tool is a gem: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edp7YNmDtMXdlIU.html

Hi there, I can offer a bit more context for thought. The wilderness rule just limits nonresidents to hunting USFS, BLM, and State land that is outside of the USFS Designated Wilderness Areas and there is a ton of public land that is great elk habitat and has fantastic numbers of elk that are outside of those designated wilderness areas. I would suggest looking at Gohunt Maps with the wilderness layers on and comparing the harvest success rates for areas that you are seeing that have public lands that are not within wilderness areas. There are many opportunities there, I have hunted Wyoming several times when I was able to take elk that were on public land outside of wilderness areas. The Wilderness Areas have good habitat, the areas outside have great habitat, it's really just a designated gov boundary. Hope that helps some.

@@trailkreitzer9163 thanks, it’s does just relaying that and giving reassurance. I guess it’s just hard for me to visualize as most of my limit experience have been in the wilderness type areas in earlier season and I kind of get myself in a trap of thinking the bulls aren’t going to be in these areas I can hunt. I keep thinking these non wilderness lands are suboptimal and more late season transition zones at lower altitude that haven’t been my preferred hunting grounds. I really need to dig back into and see what I can put together for a 2025 hunt. Plus Randy Newberg says there is a 350 bull around every corner in Wyoming so I have to give it a try! lol

@@trailkreitzer9163 idk maybe this is weird but as I said in previous comment I feel like I have just a hard time visualizing Wyoming terrain in none wilderness areas, I know Wyoming terrain can be very different than Colorado, where I have spent all of my hunting time. Is there a to hunt film or two that show Wyoming hunts that would really show the terrain and different elk habitats in Wyoming?

Question. If im applying for a type 6 or type 7 cow tag but saving points for a bull tag. Do i apply for that type 6 or 7 tag on 2nd choice or 1rst?
@chin203
@chin203 7 ай бұрын
Your 1st choice is the only one that will use your points
@TheWVgoodguy22
@TheWVgoodguy22 7 ай бұрын
A Type 6 or 7 elk tag doesn’t use any points at all and is completely random. Also it is a separate draw than the full priced draw 1,2,4,5,9 which during your first choice it will use your points so beware especially if you put type 4,5 which is full price cow tag 🏷️ and will burn your points even if you have 12 lol 😆…. However as a second choice those 4,5 full price cow tags will not burn points if successfully drawn

I had a question on group applications. If three people all have 1 point each and apply as a group. And say that gives us a 10% chance to draw. Do each of us have that 10% chance or does the group have one 10% chance? Another way to ask it is does the group get one chance at the draw or do all the members of the group get there own chance and if successful bring the rest of there group with them? Thank you for making these videos. They help me a lot.

Hi there, a group application is treated as a single application meaning that if the application is drawn all members of the group will draw a permit. So, to answer your question, all of you will have applied for the same hunts as a group and your odds of drawing that application would be 10%. Hopefully that answers your question.

I understand there is a lot to consider when applying and everyone's situation is different but unless you already have enough pts to get a tag in the next 2-3yrs and are kind of trapped in the system and don't want to lose the pts already accumulated it's not worth buying pts because you may not ever get a tag under the current system. You can still apply and get a random tag if you're lucky and that is independent of the pts draw. I'm sure the new special high price will count some people out but WY Game and Fish had the raise the price to offset the reduction in nonresident tags and revenue. You should take a pole and see how many nonresident hunters think the current tag split of 90/10 and the tags prices are anywhere close to fair.
@trailkreitzer9163
@trailkreitzer9163 7 ай бұрын
Hi Steve, certainly understand the frustration. Just wanted to clarify for anyone that might read this that the current tag split for Wyoming Elk is an 84% (resident) 16% (nonresident) split. The 90/10 split has been on the table for discussion but as of 2024 it's still a 16% split for nonresidents. Personally I think they looked at the regular/special draw odds and saw that in intention of offering better odds to folks willing to pay the higher price was not happening due to people being willing to pay that $1,283 special elk price..so they raised it. I also am certain that the added revenue was a big part of that decision. Overall, I think the odds of the special draw mid to low tier elk hunts will be better for people this year. I know that I'm not paying $2K to apply for a special tag every year. I still think points are worth purchase, even if it's to bank them and go on a general season elk hunt every five years which I think is likely going to be possible in that special draw now that the price is so high. Again, its a value/cost judgement for everyone. I do agree that with their current point system and the cost it's gotten a lot harder for nonresidents and that's even if no new applicants ever applied.

Hi there, if a person fails to purchase a preference point during the preference point only application period for elk, deer or antelope for two (2) consecutive years, all accumulated points for that species will be lost.

Like the other person said (thanks for jumping in). You don't have to apply in the draw. You can actually purchase a point starting in July. And even if you apply, you still must purchase your point if you want one and didn't draw, as you don't get one if you're unsuccessful.
@stevecook5894
@stevecook5894 7 ай бұрын
All nonresidents need to fully understand the preference pt system and the total pts by species. It is a defunct system and Wyoming knows it. That's why they have been thinking about going to a totally random draw and converting pts to bonus pts. If you are hust starting to apply in Wyoming I don't recommend buying pts.
@trailkreitzer9163

Hi there, while I certainly understand and agree to some extent due to point creep under the current system I do think that from deer, elk, and antelope it's worth buying preference points. There are hunts that you are likely to catch up to, and with the cost of the special draw going up I would anticipate the point creep to decrease some for those willing to pay the higher cost. Also, for those considering applying there is a portion of permits that are randomly allocated. Even though points are not taken into consideration in that random part of the draw, I think Wyoming is worth applying for if you can afford to front the cost of the permits.
