This will be very different to my normal Video content where I make Industrial Furniture - We are doing the Tree Change thing, going "Off Grid". Judy and I have bought a 4.5 acre wooded property in the Atherton Tablelands, Queensland, Australia. We invite you to join watch the progress as we build a much bigger workshop for my wood and metal work, and our House. We have no grid electricity, water or waste collection so we have to build our own systems. This is the introduction video where we visit the property after only just purchasing it. Lots to do!

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious Hi Scott, great move to be out in the country. I live rurally and we have been busy building everything from sheds to houses, retaining walls and water systems. First get a digger, not a tiny one either. We got a 4.5T Hitachi that is rough as hell but runs well, so handy for lifting heavy things to save your body from breaking. It has moved hundreds of cubic meters of dirt, moved shipping containers, I made a cradle for a 2man post hole borer and the digger does the heavy lifting, move water tanks, dig trenches, backfill trenches, lift beams for sheds etc etc 2nd buy chinese, I know you will say whaaat? Ingco 3" petrol powered pump 6.5hp $300 new here in nz and works amazing. If you chase the name brands you will run out of money!!! The punishing I put the 82cc 2T post hole borer through on the end of the digger after 80+ holes 1.5m deep 300mm diameter!! I have a pole saw, plate compactor, petrol jet washer, Hare & Forbes Machinery House 2nd hand lathe and mill, all chinese. Sure if your a contractor using this stuff daily it may not last but if I brought name brands I would have 1/4 of the equipment I have and it all still works well. Good luck mate, it's a great adventure.

G'day, you guys. After watching another Aussy family starting their off-grid life, one of your videos was suggested. The one where your Mrs showed us around her kitchen. That's when i decided to see what you had in your playlist, and this is the beging of your adventure. Im not one for leaving comments, not unless i have something worthwhile or entertaining to say. There is so much about me that you don't know and why should you. Im interested in making things with wood like yourself, but i never knew that in the beginning, not until until i read about you. You know what they say. "Never work with children or animals." Pippa, she had the right idea. Good on ya, girl. I will be working my way through your videos, but don't fear because in time, i would have watched every last one of them.👍 One last thing. I don't do social media for many reasons. One is because of all the BS and hateful remarks some people leave. Another is all the poo stiring, not forgetting the troublemakers like trolls. It's great what you guys are doing. Im 64 this year, having taken early retirement due to an industrial accident, which resulted in me breaking my back and some other stuff. The insurance paid off my mortgage, yippee.🎉 If only that had happened 20 years ago, i could have emigrated and did what you guys are doing, but alas, im too old now. I can still work to a certain point in my double garage that serves as my workshop. I also have a very large wooden cabin like structure built to the side where i keep most of my tools, but the lathes, milling machine, and other large machines, they are all in my garage. I work when i want, for how long i want to at my own pace and get paid by the job rather than than by the hour. My customers know of my situation and are very understanding, which is why my charges are very reasonable and why i have so much work on. I am an engineer, time served, as well as other trades, a jack of all trades, some would say, master of them all. I meddle with trucks and cars, which is where my fabricating and welding experience comes in very handy. The bread and butter of my now very reduced business. Right now, im just finishing off the last part of my kitchen, oiling the four work tops and island top. These were made using a combination of British hard wood species. Cherry, ash birch, and walnut. It sounds crazy using so many different spices together, even peculiar, but once you see it well, it is... Lets just say that my friends will always give me their honest opinions and thoughts. They know me, they know i speak my mind and expect others to do the same, in a polite and respectful manor of course. They do not beat around the bush and nor do i. The truth is always best, even if it is not what one expects to hear. Not every one of my friends liked the wood combination. They said things like, "its too busy, or the wrong colour cordination or it looks like a stick of Brighton rock or the best was, i thought Jasons technicolour raincoat had a lot of colours but your tops, blimey." The thing is that, although the majority who saw the test pieces i made, small rectangles 1' x 1'6", just to get a feel of which woods looked better together, most actually liked my final choice. It was not just friends or family but anyone who came into my house, even delivery drivers. Opinions are worth something as they can help with making the right decisions in the end. After the wood was sorced, it was roughly cut into 4" thick, 6" wide, and 5' long planks. I planned each edge and then stuck 6 different planks togther using epoxy resin and dowels for alignment purposes. After two days, i cut the 3' wide planks into 1' wide lengths, then stuck them together using the same method as before. I repeated this what seemed like 100 more times, reducing the cut width each time to obtain the right striped effect ending around half an inch wide. After all of the glueing and sawing, the planks were now 4' long and 3' wide and just under 4" thick. Instead of trying to match up the ends, which would have been impossible, i went for a different approach. I cut the boards roughly at a 20° angle, then placed each cut side by side. It was not my idea, but some Aussy on KZfaq called 'Dainer' from Dainer Makes. That way, it didn't matter how thick or thin each stripe of the plank was as there was equal space between each length of board. I used more epoxy resin and dowels for alignment, then trimmed the ends and side in situ. Drying times was my hardest test as the humidity here is, umm, on the damp side right now. I thought the really hard part was finding enough of the wood thick enough allowing for thicknessing and planning, but i was wrong. Even with 4" thick planks, thicknessing, and plaining them down to just above 3" was such a difficult, frustrating task to achieve. The job of building the tops that i thought would have taken me a week to 10 days to do actually took almost two months. Then more sanding with god knows how many levels of grits, then finally, 3 coats of oil. That took another 18 days until dry enough to start using. The trunk of a British cherry tree is not that long or thick. Most were around 5' to 6' long, so that was the good news. The bad news was the width. Once the bark and sapwood were removed, there was not much heartwood left to work with. When i purchased all my wood, not the oak, i did my very best to pick the straightest trunks with no curves. 80 trunks of the different species were needed at a cost of £1,890 of which probably £300 was wasted, fire wood. Believe me, at todays prices that was cheap. I got it all for a good price because i get all of my wood from the same timber merchant and have done for almost 25 years. Everything is made from good old fasioned British hard woods. The wood i have used is British Oak for the main structure. Ash for draws, Cherry and Walnut for facials like the draws and cupboard fronts, and a tiney slither of Beach for shelving. There also is a small amount of pine used just to ensure that some corners are better supported. The tree i felled 7 years ago because part of it came crashing down in a storm through my roof one 3am morning causing £6,700 worth of damage was 30' long and 39" wide. My insurance company refused to insure me again unless the tree was removed as they considered it to be dangerous. I had to get special permission as Oak in the UK is protected. After it came down, i first put several coats of oil on both ends to help with splitting, which can happen if drying too quickly. Then, I placed it at the side of my house on runners, where for 5 years, it lay under a tarpaulin slowly drying out until needed. In its place, i planted a new 5' oak, which i got free from a local forestry who was better managing each plot. Then, 2 years ago, i cut it into different slab thicknesses, leaving it all to dry out in my garage, which, although being a double size, it left no room for the car. Wall to wall floor to ceiling, slab on top of slab with no room to swing a cat, even if i had one. 3 months ago, i started cutting the wood for my kitchen and then storing it in rough lengths in my dining room to acclimatise. All that was needed was to get each length to the right thickness, measure then cut to length, and start building. I then cleared everything out of my lonunge so it could be used as a temporary workshop. That was to save me having to walk so far. Having a planer thicknesser is useful but messy. There's not much room for a sawdust extractor. By the end of this weekend, the kitchen will be completely finished. Then i can start the tedious job of putting up 1,500 ceramic tiles. Yey, such fun. Oh, and then there is grouting. Let's not forget about that now, shall we. I dream of grouting. Then I'll get back to building my 1967 Ford Cortina MK1 Lotus engine, my pride and joy. Then a respray and voilà. I just have the little task off skimming the head, which I need to send out and expand the valve ports and perhaps new linings with oversized pistons, which i can do. All done in my garage now that i can get to the equipment.😁 In short, im pretty good with my hands so I can look after myself living off the grid. Perhaps i could live in the Black Mountains of North wales or the Highlands of Scotland. I wouldn't mind building my own home from logs, like a Canadian cabin and a workshop like yours only smaller. It needs just big enough to have the right equipment to work on neighbours' vehicles or fix things like generators, tractors, and other farm equipment. Weld up stuff, anything to help out others and earn a reasonable living. As i mentioned in the beginning. I don't leave comments as a rule, not unless i have something worthwhile to say, but i will give you the thumbs up on every video. Just don't expect a comment every time. They take me too long to write.😂 Here's seeing you.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Thank you so much for your comment. It's good to wrap up a project and your kitchen sounds like you are nearly there! I love when people have a go. Sorry to hear of your back injury but it's good that you are still being as active as you can. I think that is very important to keep doing things. I had the Mk2 Ford Cortina. It would be worth a fortune no days but it's probably rusted away. I appreciate and respect your view on the Social Media comments. Until next time, all the very best!

Always fun watching Dozers work. Just pushing trees over like it's no big deal. So much torque. Hard to believe how much manual labor one of those machines saves. New property is off to a great start. Curious to see what the wood looks like when you saw it up. Those trees look very different than the species we have up here in Minnesota, USA. No surprise there I suppose.

Permaculture design principles are what you need to study Scott. The very first thing is to establish your water design, taking into account the high/low points of your property and contouring to establish swales and dams. Then position roads and buildings etc. The Permaculture Design Manual is a must read.✅

Scott, I believe the trees are Grey Box (E. Molucanna) , fiberous bark on the lower trunk and smoother further up the tree is what I'm going on plus the sandy loam type soil is what they love. I had the same reaction as you to clearing them and would have looked at getting the larger ones milled into lumber to use later. Don't beat yourself up too much about pushing them over. You have to break the eggs to make a tasty omelette mate. Cheers Eric

@ScottTurnerformeindustrious it's an ongoing process for sure. We just recently got an old pastured block of a couple of acres. LOTS of planting to do (lost the first 50 tubestock trees to kangaroos over covid so lesson learnt about fencing. At least the next ones we've only lost 25% to roos and lack of water over a 2-3 year period.
