I'm medically retired from the Navy and have a decent passive income (about $4k a month). I've only recently regained my ability to do hard, manual labor and have wanted to homestead during my 10+ year recovery. I feel as though I'm in a better place than most to try. I grew up in a farming community raising all sorts of animals and helping neighbors with their harvest. Your videos have given me a lot of confidence that this is possible for me. The initial steps seem to be the most daunting, but I'll be ordering some of your books and seeing where hard work will get me. Thanks for putting all the effort into making things easier for those in my position.

🦋🌿 I liked the idea, of us being able to help someone on their homestead for free room and board. I may be 60 years old, but it would definitely be fun to get to help a family and live a life staying busy around animals and gardening

You forgot to mention off-grid near a lake, river, large stream, pond, or whatever near water. One could obtain a fishing license wherever they wish and catch a limit of fish often enough to fill a freezer with fish meat. You have great content and you deserve a much larger following. Thanks bro.

Just want to say that I've been following your channel for a while and haven't commented yet, but it's one of my favorite sources of homesteading/off-grid inspiration. I'm going a really gradual route to going off-grid myself, and it feels like an impossible idea sometimes. But it's hugely helpful to see someone else doing it solo, since that seems hard to find examples of, and it just gives me back the confidence that it is possible. So thank you! (And your greenhouse is looking great with the plants growing in! I've dug a lot of holes by hand, so I know how much work that is, but it's usually been in a team, so I'm still impressed with that whole build.)

Also remember your land is a long term INVESTMENT that will almost always be worth more several years down the line than it is today, often quite a bit more. It's amazing how once you're on the other side of the equation, increasing property values aren't always so bad, aside from the taxes, of course.

I would simply swap the order of priorities from to WATER, shelter, food. Installing a well can be extremely expensive even in relatively easy places, like here in FL, and building a water catchment system takes a bit of time and money, albeit often less than a well. Once you have water, you can put out an fires, start growing some veg and even purify it to drink, if need be. Cheers from N. FL.!

Great video John, I bought land and an RV and came out here with a small retirement. I find I can cover everything but building materials. Food, water and shelter is covered. Solar and propane keeps me alive but most days I have nothing to use to build with. I see your progress and feel like I'm not getting much done. Last time I bought wood was months ago. I want to build everyday but I don't have left over cash. I'm trying to figure this all out. I miss scrap yards and garage sales lol

If I make it appear that I am building constantly, that's not the way it is. Especially in the beginning. There are often months between larger projects, and many of my projects are simply holes in the ground because, well I have ground. Also much of the material I get is bartered or traded scrap from larger towns hours away.

@@FrugalOffGridbut yeah you're right, its hard to find free materials once you move out there. Here in SF Bay Area, the yuppies throw out everything including the kitchen sink.. windows, toilets, lumber, concrete blocks, pavers, etc

The kind of off grid living that I want is to be COMPLETELY independent without EVER needing to rely on currency for anything. How can I do this? I need to know because I'm sick and I am tired of living in an economy. I want to do everything myself. Build my own shelter, grow my own food, get my own water, everything without needing to pay for nothing.

I always thought I’d find “my people” and start an off grid community together. Unfortunately, that’s unrealistic and hasn’t happened. I’m practicing homesteading from my apartment and preparing to live without utilities right here. It’s hard and it helps to watch videos like this to encourage me. Thanks man!

Or you can do what I did 😊 I stopped accounting put my furniture in storage and became a trucker, lived in that truck for 8 months saved every dime, paid cash for my land, then saved and got my home moved onto my property , home, 2 car garage, 10x28 leanto for meat chicks, chicken coup and 10x20 run then got a man cave for hubby and a sheshed for me, paid off everything within 16 years once all paid off I stopped traveling all Lower 48 to enjoy my home . I am not off grid so if you chose to get a shed conversion and work on it as you come home you would be debt free sooner than I did, I just added 150.00 more each month and yeah took me 16 years but had I not been handing $ over to grown kids and not been blowing and going on the $ I was making I would have been debt free in 3 years not 16. It’s all on what you choose and want to do.

Folks should also look into Owner Financing options. Many people are actually looking for "good people" to sell their land to. Not everyone is trying to sell out to developers and many will take quite a bit less money, for the promise of being a good steward of the land.

I think you should spend more time chatting about the mental benefits of your lifestyle.... no boss, no clocking in, no worrying about sick days or getting a day off work... the relaxed life has to be abundant with piece of mind that most of do not experience on a daily basis...

Id suggest whoever is considering doing this to do it soon..Lands selling pretty damn fast over here now, And the price hike is going up slightly as well, Shoot im making it by with $300 a month, And thats hauling my own water in! Small propane tanks least 3 can last you a month if you only use them to warm up food or cook food.. Grounds sand.. virtually no rocks so a pick is all you need with a shovel if you got determination also, A rake is highly advisable. And clearing sage brush and rakeing it out and going down a foot or more to harder sand/clay is enough for a decent road into the property. No need to hire some dude with a bulldozer. Gonna start raising chickens next year. 😅

only thing free (zero money) would be to hike into a remote corner of the world and start from scratch like in the Amazon, Congo, Siberia, Canadas Boreal Forest. If you do so in city limits even in most rural areas you will be subject to zoning laws and most of the land is privately owned so you would be squatting.
