Will Rahmer invented the whole New York Death Militia thing with the NYDM logo, so it makes sense they'd get grandfathered in. I agreed with most of his G.O.A.T.s. I'd probably jump Baphomet and Morpheus Descends up a tier and move Malignancy and Immortal Suffering down to just Good, but he's more into brutal death metal than the straight-up old school stuff so it makes sense why he's got stuff where it is. Repudilation and Pyrexia are both essential.

Even from a modern brutal death metal standpoint, I'd say Morpheus Descends is super important. That riff like fifty seconds into "Cruciform Hills" is almost like proto-slam, but they mold it into this atmospheric death metal context with the rolling drums almost like early Darkthrone or something. Maybe they weren't as big in terms of sales or getting on a whole lot of large tours, but if you look back at old photos, you can see all the Suffocation guys wearing Morpheus Descends shirts. That's gotta count for something!

I think he's ranking them by how much he himself likes them instead of the general consciousness, maybe calling the best tier Great instead of GOAT would have been a better idea. Gotta give him props for at least knowing all those bands though.

When he was talking about Mortician, when he said "More of a death metal band than a grindcore band" it was in reference to the grindcore bands he said he was excluding, which explains why it's still on the list, because he meant that alot of people might consider Mortician more of a grindcore band, but personally he sees them as more of a Death Metal band, I'll admit when I first watched his video I thought the same as you did. He ultimitaly ranked it as a Goat of NYDM though! You should check out Cerebral Hemorrhage though, 90s - 2000s band which only has 1 demo and one album to their name (that being "exempting reality"), but they're fucking killer!

I think most death metal fans have extremely different tastes despite being in the same genre. It’s such a chaotic style of music we all have different things we find entertaining as a baseline in it. That’s why some people gravitate more to slamming death and grind and others go more toward tech and thrashy sounding shit. Even the mixing of the songs matter completely

Afterbirth's big classic is still that demo, but I think their second post-reunion full-length is way better than their first full-length, so I'm excited to see if that career trajectory continues. That "Beheading the Buddha" song is pretty gnarly.

I see Cannibal Corpse getting dogged a lot and I often wonder if the people in question have even listened to them, especially their more recent albums. I've seen comments on the new album sounding like the "same old Cannibal Corpse" or being compared to past albums like Erik Rutan hasn't brought new elements to their sound. A novel idea, but try to actually listen to stuff before having an opinion on it.

Jimmy is a good guy. When I saw this video I did disagree with a lot he said but he’s definitely into metal. He’s got a cd collection that he’s shown on multiple occasions and spends a lot of money on music. He’s definitely older than me but he’s not a poser by any stretch of the imagination.

Usually folks down here only gush over the debut 'The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows', which is very good in it's own right. However, there's an unfortunate lack of mentions for their follow-ups 'Riding Our Black Oceans' & 'Epic Rites: 9 Epic Tales & Death Rites', which I got a strong suspicion you might dig a whole lot as well. Shameless plug, but in case you're interested, happened to have live performances of Epic Rites-era Cenotaph on my channel (along with The Chasm & Immolation).

Relapse slacks it, they got all these awesome 7” releases they should reissue. Even those awesome relapse singles cd was awesome. I had a good handful of mortician CDs lost them over the years I picked up the “from the casket” cd off necroharmonic I need to get the rest also.

@@Lavabug No offense but I don’t think you were listening close enough. I’d say they are just as weird and abstract as that. If not weirder. Stuff like “Beyond Sanctorum” and “Symphones Masses” has a lot of angular and uncanny riffing. Songs like “Baal Religion” and “Cthulhu” prove that.

@@andrewgabriel4408 let's agree to disagree, and by the way I love both their death metal era, and their prog/symphonic/power metal, whatever I think it's actually unique, Therion starting with the ''Theli'' album were combining so many genres, they still had death metal songs like on the album ''Secret of the Runes'' and here and there on the other albums, it was unique for me, but it's fine it's not for everyone, but by no means it was generic symphonic power metal, I don't agree.
