As long as we don't forget to augment such limitless experimentation with skills, methods, and thorough education of history. Ignorance of and hostility towards art tends to stem from a lack of education rather than an abundance of it.

Yeah, I agree. The people who it truly unnerves and bothers are the propagators of the mindless competition. They are relatively content, but as soon as someone else shows off something and rubs it in their face ("first"), they instantly feel jealousy and resentment. They are the one living in mindless competition, they will be fine but as soon as they see someone else has something they don't have, they begin to harbor anger and envy, until they can rub something in others faces, too.

Perfectly understandable. Being school for a long time doesn't necessarily mean that one has had an education. If there's one thing that Post Modern artists can all agree upon, its that we can't agree upon anything. Its given me my fair share of frustration as well.

It does seem that the previous TED talks were much more enlightening. But did you expect them all to be excellent? By my count there are only 8 - 10 really great TED talks.

I take it you're referring to that 'snout' device. I don't think you can use technology like that to intimidate or reduce stealing. The result you'll get with stuff like this is exactly what you see here. People will more than likely just stand around and be goofy with the contraption. Interactivity does that. Its fascinating how interactive technology does that. Put people in the presence of something like that and it will automatically illicit a playful response!

The lack of an art category doesn't mean that the iPhone store is lacking art programs it's the failure of hard defined categories. If the apps were arranged by tags then the "art" tag would certainly be front and center. Tag clouds rule, hierarchies drool.

I think perhaps for many 'firsters' it's just a joke that they know pisses some people off. Most of us casual viewers have no feelings about firsters one way or the other. But for those who are annoyed by someone typing 'first', they give a reason for firsters to keep typing 'first'.

i'm of the camp that thinks art is simply what people make of it, so i think if it's viewed as some evasive mystic thing, then it will sound pretentious when someone declares himself an artist. i don't think it's mystic. i think it's good or bad, and to say you're an artist is just a way to describe what you do. in terms of what Levin expresses, I see it as a curiosity about the world and about ourselves.

I agree, it seems somewhat shallow to compete for glory alone, but social acceptance is a big part of who we are. The is an innate drive to have someone on top. If theres an opening people try to fill the Alpha-gap. Finding happiness in the modern world requires these things to be set aside. Especially on the internet, insulting people, or trying to express dominance is so meaningless. We should co-author a book called "firsting"

The big eye was a big finish :o) I found he killed a little bit of applause by setting up the wrong expectation in the audience. For instance, the 30 minutes of nonsense was probably assumed to be English non-sequitur. Nobody could relate to the achievement since they can't relate to the sounds, and thus can't weigh what they know against what the software produced. Again with the eye tracking, he made it sound like we were going to see something else and the eyes were the quick intro to it.

I agree with you entirely; egalitarinasm has absolutely no place in art. If it is true to say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it is at east equally true to say that comprehension (or want of it) is in the brain of the beholder. Unapologetic elitism is a good thing.

Yea, when that Jaap guy is doing his thing, there are several times where the jibberish appears on screen before he says any of it. Not exactly real-time recognition. More like a well rehearsed sham. And the rest isn't all that impressive considering my webcam is near enough in technology to replicate the tracking features demonstrated in this video.

I just have a bad feeling about people, who call themselves artists... "I am an artist"... always reminds me of wannabe aritists who have nothing to express. On the other hand I beleive, that almost every engineer is an artist in some way. But I don't see what this guy has to express... And for me that is something art is: expressing something in a "differnet way"... But life is not just black and white... :)

Competition without a self-reliant goal is meaningless. If you want to compete to get something for yourself, that's great. If you want to compete to get something so others think of you differently, then you are weak.
