If golb did eat the pillow universe thats kind of sad, because perhaps during the time Finn no longer could remember pillow world, is at the same timd Golb devoured that universe. That would mean his life, hardships, experience and family pretty much got erased like it never happened. To this day the pillow fort episode has been stuck in my head from how sad and messed up it is.

Golb reminds me more of a lovecraftian horror. Exists outside of space and time, is neither malevolent nor benevolent (it just is), warps reality just by being there, could theoritically destroy existence as we know it if it willed it....... I don't think it's a baby, I just think it's so unbelievably more powerful than we can comprehend that it doesn't need to move, or enact it's will. Just as gravity pulls objects together so to do things become undone by entropy. It's the inevitability, the methodical, slow grind of what will be rather than the quick cacaphony of death and destruction that Golb wants. Even if it takes strange aeons of unrelenting time, numbers so large that they become myths, for a reality to end it's merely nothing in the eyes of Golb as it exists outside power, laws, death, time.

I feel like the idea that "Betty (and her obsession with rescuing her Simon) is the biggest threat Ooo (and now, the Multiverse) has/will ever face." is pretty heavily suggested by the finale and most of her appearances. Even in the flashback with the ketchup, the implication seems to be that Betty's always loved HARD.

Is the reason golb came because the adventure time universe could have ended considering it was the end of the show so he came to consume that universe. But then Betty saved it and Pendleton reincarnated Finn and Jake in to Beth and shermy and they go on to have adventures.

I love how when Prismo can't fulfill a wish, he ends up spawning a literal basket case!

I think when the Lich talks about the time of monsters “before there was nothing” that was the age of the scholars of GOLB. Each terrible monster a new interpretation of the supreme entropy. The lich that gives the speech about being the last scholar of GOLB is from the farm world dimension and could be ignorant of Orgalorg still being alive (but still neutralized)

Random thought; but I kinda like to think that Betty's wish of 'keep Simon safe' is just too vague of a wish in world where potential threats like Golb and the Lich exist so the only way the crown could pull that wish off, is to fuse Betty with the biggest threat to Simon (Golb) and use his/her/that eternal power to weave a threat free and safe fate/life for Simon.

I only just realized that the temple of Mars is shaped like GOLB's head (title-card of same name).

I don't think the lich is misguided at all, he is just trying to feed Golb by hastening the end of a universe.

When you said that Golb was just a baby and ages as the universe, my first thought was that since the Lich wanted to destroy all life, what if he wanted to meet Golb full grown? And speed up that process of aging Golb faster by killing everything.

During an adventure time episode, I saw an image of golb in some magic manual, next to an image of the gnostic demiurge called abraxas. This demiurge sounds similar to the entity golb.

My idea of how GOLB and the lich works is like Galactus and his heralds. The lich is there to "prepare" the universe for consumption

I think that the time when Finn hopped off of Golb's neck was representing the end of someone's life. Like whenever someone dies, they're moved to the void, where they get "eaten" by golb. But since Finn wasn't really dead, he stopped his inevitable death, and avoided it going back to his regular life. Adventure time is insanely complex

Looking at this theory through the lens of the end of Fiona and Cake, particularly the aside that the Lich might actually be a shard of Original Golb, that *could* tie into why the Lich starts to lose his way. The original being from which he derives his purpose is no longer the being it was, Golb is no longer a being of pure entropy and destruction; it is now Golb/Betty, which has different priorities and desires. Even without the 'shard of Golb' theory, the Lich's 'crisis of faith' makes a lot of sense from that angle, too. The Lich was essentially, depressed after getting what he wanted... but not because it wasn't what he expected it to be on its own merit, but because he expected, as a Scholar of Golb, to be *rewarded* for doing the Work of Golb. And that didn't happen. And continued to not happen, whether because Golb literally was not aware of it pre-Betty, or because Golb/Betty no longer would have rewarded that the same way Golb might have. It's entirely possible that the destruction of all life in a universe was something the Lich was attempting in order to prepare said universe to be ready for devouring by Golb, and that his expected 'reward' was annihilation, both of the universe he had prepared, and of himself along with it, to be repurposed in the great chaos. But that never happened - Golb/Betty never consumed that dead universe, and the Lich never received his reward, sending him into a spiral of existential depression. Perhaps Golb/Betty has chosen not to eat dead universes anymore. And that might have some dramatic consequences on the multiverse itself going forward.

When the Lich says "The last Scholar of Glob" He's not talking about a group of people. He's just using it as a title to punctuate his existence and purpose. He is saying "I am the ender of life before chaos destroys reality"

I don't know, I feel like Golb being a baby isn't due to some lifespan or infancy -- I think a better interpretation is that he's a baby because that's the craziest most chaotic form he could take. Inherent to who he is, Golb is unfathomable and essentially unmotivated. He's closer to a chaotic force of nature to a being that can grow and change, and I think him being a baby only reinforces that he follows absolutely no logic or timeline. He just IS.

I think that Golb is Prismo's boss, or one of his bosses. In the episode "Crossover" in which Finn confronts his alternate dimension self Ice Finn, Prismo mentions that he has a boss. Prismo, the interdimensional, cosmic keeper of reality has a boss. Who could that possibly be? Well there's only being we know of that it could be; Golb (although I do believe there's another possibility that I'll go over later). He's the only being we know of who isn't merely interdimensional, but rather exists completely outside of the multiverse, outside of space, time, and reality. He's the greatest cosmic force we've ever seen and is the embodiment of chaos itself. Now, I don't truly think Prismo takes orders or answers to Golb. But I do believe Golb is his "boss" im the sense that he has authority over Prismo in the same sense that a god has power over a priest, regardless of whether that priest works for that god. As for who Prismo's boss is actively, I believe that if there's an embodiment of chaos there must also be an embodiment of order. A creator. And I believe that being is the same entity as whoever is making the catalyst comets. They have to come from somewhere and they are generally speaking quite neutral on their own, with the Lich being the only exception. Something is creating these agents of change, some embodiment of order and balance is enforcing change upon existence in order to maintain balance. And whoever or whatever it is doing it is clearly aware of and likely opposite to Golb. The Lich for example calls himself the "last scholar of Golb." Contrary to your theory I don't think this indicates the existence of a cult nor does it indicate worship. The Lich has 1 goal, 1 desire alone; the extinction of all life. He wishes to bring death and destruction to all of existence. He emerged from his catalyst comet fully formed and ready for this task, the very impact of his comet alone was enough to completely level society and destroy most of all life. No, the Lich's connection to Golb exists on a more fundamental level than simply by choice. He was made to be an agent of Golb, and his sole desire is to invoke Golb. His overall goal was likely to do exactly what Betty did, except unlike her he never imagined such a possibility as bringing his master directly to him. I doubt he could have pulled it off anyway. But to invoke Golb, as an agent of Golb's chaos is likely the highest possible honor. And I think we know who the other scholars of Golb were. G- ? O- Orgalorg L- Lich B- Betty Tldr: I believe that Golb is one of two ultimate all powerful beings, the other one being the embodiment of order. This being is Prismo's boss as well as the creator of the catalyst comets. The Lich was created as a catalyst comet, if not directly by Golb then for Golb as the most objectively powerful agent of Golb's chaos. 2 of the other scholars of Golb (Orgalorg and Betty) are known, and they are not scholars through worship or research or cult mentality, simply through design, intent, and power. Agents of chaos to the last. I also believe that had he not met Betty and given her his powers, Magic Man would have become a scholar of Golb

I think golb's existence is purely based on his destruction of worlds, he exists as a meta symbol for the show, the destruction of adventure time. I think the way that golb doesn't destroy the world and how everyone comes together to defeat him is really fitting analogy for adventure times the tv show ending. i.e. its not completely gone, the community around adventure time will always keep it alive.

Glob is the beginning while Golb is the end. They were once a single being; the One. As the multiverse expanded so did the One hence they split into 2. Neither Glob or Golb are good or evil. They are just both forms of creation and destruction in their own rites. The scholars of Golb were misguided they felt that Golb wanted everything to die but he doesn't. He wants to find Glob and become whole. A piece of Glob exists in every living creature of the multiverse while a piece of Golb exists in the Lich who exists in the multiverse. But now that Betty has fused with Golb we cannot say whether they will return or simply wait out the multiverse til it collapses in leaving Glob, Golb and Betty to restart everything

The idea of a celestial/godlike entity being just a baby when encountered is terrifying because you have no idea when their "maturity" kicks in and they realize their capabilities to alter entire multiverses by simply doing nothing but thinking and breathing.

I do prefer to think of GOLB as essentially just an immutable fact of the multiverse, not really exerting any specific will, we do have to consider the whole Margles aspect: why did GOLB "eat" her. The way this is portrayed is not at all metaphorical sounding, like she just died: she was actively *taken* by GOLB for some reason. Perhaps she did something similar to Betty, trying to harness the power of GOLB for her own purposes, and got gobbled up.

I always though that Prismo’s boss was the literal boss of adventure time, the creator Pendleton who tells the artists drawing the scenes what to do. Could explain why he wasn’t able to fullfill the wish of magic man, he was breaking the rules of his “bosses” world and drew him a basket case.

You brought up a interesting thing that made me question bettys actions here...I thought and still think betty is the most tragic character ever and when I saw the last episode I thought she made a terrible choice not just the fact she risked her life to save simon/ice king but also because she merged with the most evil entity in all the multiverse...I dont think all that was worth it just to make her husband sane again..I mean things looked like ice king and betty could've just worked it out...however now after you brought up that golb would eventually destroy EVERTHING that leads me to believe that she was the ultimate hero of this story? Now, bear with me here, but I dont think what resulted was intentional (except turning IK back into simon) however by unintentionally merging with him changed what destruction that would've been if golb reached full consciousnes. However with her consciousness in control she was able to stop the destruction and go back to whatever dimension glob resides and if she has that amount of control she could also cease the inevitable destruction of the multiverse there by saving all humanity across the universe for eternity....now that we can come to that conclusion maybe her sacrifice was more than worth it and like I said earlier betty was the ultimate hero in adventure time?

i really hope you make a theory video about fionna and cake man, this was such a treat to watch and i enjoyed every minute. really excited to see if you make anything covering the spin off. i am fascinated by it, if i tried to list everything i love about AT i would die before i finished speaking. one thing i love about this series is that it is so immersive, it captivates me and entrenches me in its lore like its my business in real life. It breaks your heart, it lifts your spirits, it builds you up, gives you love, rips it away to force you to find something else to love, to quote Vita Sackville-west "you have broken down my defenses. and i dont really resent it." this is a show that truly has an audience which deeply and fully loves it the way we love each other. it is such a beautiful and masterful piece of art and god damn it i am chomping at the bit for them to relinquish more information about the story. For a series with hundreds of episodes that has lasted around a decade, youd think they would have covered everything by now. But they built such a real, complicated, ancient world that even describing god is an enigma. and golb is like... the embodiment of the universe.. youd think theyd be one of the more prioritized things to talk about in at LEAST one episode. But instead we only talk about the effect they have on inhabitants of that universe. we dont talk about golb themself. We dont even talk about golbs colleagues.

Based on the Fiona cakes stuff and the way you describe, she gives herself up to golb by becoming a part of him. That seems to be like a slightly toxic issue with a relationship where she consistently seems to be giving up parts of herself because she loves Simon so much. Like with the latest episode when fionna says "so you got on the buss with her". Simon says of course not. Betty gave up her own expedition in order to return his love. Hopefully that gets addressed in the last two episodes. I would say it's also not even subtext. Her roommate literally says "don't make her miss her bus"

When you're watching this in 2021 and hear him say "it's ended and I'm sad I'm not gonna get any more episodes.

My first thought is the litches line “before there was nothing there were monsters” (meaning golb has already once completed his task) what if these monsters were the scholars of golb? It would make some sense since the litch is aware of their existence (and possibly was there with them) and what if the litch was the last of these monsters making him the last scholar? It’d also loosely tie into the comet since he’d have to roam existence somehow. Just a thought.

Here’s an interesting idea to play around with. What if one doesn’t necessarily become a Scholar of Golb willingly? What if reading too much into Golb and its power has a sort of memetic effect, making one obsessed with Golb and unwittingly do its bidding, eventually leading to the Scholar’s downfall? It would explain the Lich being the “Last Scholar of Golb,” since Golb’s influence already killed off the others as a side effect. It would also explain what compelled Betty to summon Golb directly to Ooo in her efforts to save Simon, even in spite of the fact that Golb’s power would likely have destroyed Ooo, and Simon with it, instead. Even in the Simon Flashback, he seemed to become fixated on the topic of Golb until Betty accidentally knocked him out with a jar of cherries. It’s possible that in that moment, Simon himself could’ve been drawn into being a scholar of Golb had Betty not intervened.

The breath of the lich brings death. The breath of Golb brings mutation, chaos and change. The same green of the lich well and elsewhere in the series is used for golb's breath. Golb reverts those it consumes as it reverses their change through life as if reading them into itself. The crown cannot destroy Golb as it is beyond death, it can change it because that is it's nature.

I just noticed that the character beside Golb named Malus in Betty’s book with the chicken head looks just like Marggles when she turns into that monster.

Personally I wonder about the relation to Glob (GGGG).

There a lot of misconceptions about golb after Betty made her wish, first of all bettys wish was to give her the power to protect Simon and currently the most powerful being there was golb so the hat made them one. That doesn’t mean bettys personality completely overrides a multiverse deity golb is still golb when Simon dies naturally Bettys wish will be fulfilled because she did everything she could to protect him from danger and i have a theory once that happens she’ll be unfused from golb and either be spit out or devoured.

Funny enough, it was ultimately love that both almost destroyed the world and also saved it (although only temporarily) Betty is one crazy girl, Simon is an unlucky man (or lucky depending on how you wanna look at it)

So this is interesting. There's a few things that are missing. First is the fact that before the multiverse came to be there was monsters. I think of monsters as the incarnation of the primordial chaos, though we should probably call it the primordial entropy, it seems that inevitably the monsters will wind, it's the ultimate end. In that sense most monsters are themselves mindless, they simply are that powerful. It makes sense that GOLB is a baby, he is simply acting. For all we know (and this is mere speculation, no evidence) the existence of GOLB was the reason the multi-verse came to be. Though we have no idea what triggered the change. GOLB seems to be an amoral entity, he simply is, and is a part of the multiverse, which is why he cannot be removed. For all we know if Golb ceased to be, the balance that keeps the multiverse existence would also die. It kind of makes sense, the nature of the multiverse is both harmony *and* change, you can't have both eternally. Once the harmony is lost, GOLB comes over and eats the universe ending it. This is why Betty can't get rid of GOLB, there must always be a GOLB, but Betty can fuse herself with GOLB and fulfill her purpose while ensuring Simon lives a fulfilling life. Only when Betty embraces that her relationship with Simon was over and would never come back, when she embraces the new changed universe, is she able to free Simon and also push back GOLB. I think pillow world is a good example of the challenges of this system, and one that gives us a clue to the nature of the multiverse, Fiona & Cake seem to push on this. What if the thing that makes universes real is that they are dreamed? After all even Prismo is a dream itself. I don't think that GOLB himself is the dreamer, but he is yet another dream, this time the dream of the creators of the show, as is the whole multiverse. Pillow World was a creation of Finn, a fantasy world he could retreat when he couldn't deal with reality after having his heart broken and having his notion that "he's always the good guy" challenged (a very important lesson that matters later, since it helps him realize "no-one, not even the Lich, is always the bad guy"). Thing is pillow universe was incomplete and unstable, if you took it too far the story starts to fall apart and things stop making as much sense, the only thing keeping it around is that Finn needed this fantasy, but once he made peace and had no need to avoid the truth anymore, the reality of the universe flimsiness comes up, the universe is unstable and breaks down. So the multiverse is born of life, and therefore it must die as living things die too, GOLB is just the incarnation of this, of how things we imagined and possibilities eventually leave our mind and are forgotten, and it's just part of the cycle. Don't feel bad for the pillow world, it was a universe that lived a fulfilling and complete life. And this is why maybe Prismo shouldn't have created the universe. As a dream himself Prismo's universe should be ephemeral, but his divine/cosmic status allows him to perpetuate this far beyond, leaving us to wonder if it should exist. Prismo hid it in Ice King's mind because then, as a fantasy, it would make sense, and the Ice King's madness prevented him from changing. So when Simon is cured and he's able to grow, so are his fantasies (which he is losing the value for) triggering the whole series. Phew, so now on to the "scholars of GOLB". I think that once you see this it can be easy to be taken by madness, to think that the world is bad and you need to "return it to how it is", which is the anti-thesis to one of the core themes throughout adventure time and all its offshoots: *change happens, sometimes it's very painful: embracing it and moving on is part of the harmony and beauty of life*. GOLB is the lack of change: death itself, and trying to return things to the past rather than embracing them, to keep things the same and unchanging, well the things that do not change are dead, and a universe that cannot move forward is done and unstable, and as such must be eaten. To someone who is so grief-sticken they cannot see beyond the most superficial take, GOLB seems to "fix" broken universes, it can be easy to convince yourself that a change in the universe is wrong and must be corrected, and the only solution is to end it, so a new universe that is right from the start can be born anew. You don't see this as suicide, but rather eliminating the possible yous that suffer, to leave only a universe where you're happy, it's kind of using quantum mass suicide (look it up, very interesting thought experiment) to make it so the universe can only be as you want it to be, no other way. This is what happens to Betty and Magic Man, their inability to move forward brings out GOLB. And it works, GOLB deconstructs things back to their original way, and we realize that some changes were good, some bad, to GOLB it's all the same, things are returned to their primordial being. The thing is the land of OOO and the universe on which it resides was not ready it still had a lot to give. That said the Lich stands out as a separate thing, it calls itself "the last scholar", a scholar is a student, but they are a scholar of their subject, not their teacher; GOLB is what the Lich admires and aspires to be, and studies and promotes its way of being. I don't think there's a cult here, but rather it's the recognition they are the only cosmic entity that seeks this currently. Being the last implies they were other, I wonder if it was the primordial monsters, with most preferring the chaos they can inflict on the universe (as the primordial chaos was maxxed out, you couldn't make it more chaotic, entropy wouldn't increase at this point). The Lich is a Catalyst Comets incarnated, like Finn, but while Finn is a catalyst comet that helps build and grow, the Lich is a comet that brings downfall and death, and this isn't (strictly) bad. After all the human world before the land of OOO was highly corrupted, and by bringing it down and ending it, the Lich created the space to grow more. It's just the the Lich never stops and always seeks more. In that way the Lich may be a Catalyst Comet that seeks to be an in-universe version of GOLB, doing within the universe, to the planets inside that universe, what GOLB does in the multi-verse to the universes within. The Lich then is a scholar of GOLB, learning the need for this chaos from seeing the need for GOLB itself (even though GOLB doesn't teach himself). It could be that the Lich is a corrupted catalyst comet, corrupted by GOLB the way he corrupts everything else by his presence when he's around. For all we know GOLB is near when a universe is born and always plants a seed of chaos within it, which will corrupt things, the scholars are those that follow GOLB's ideas. And while the details may change, I believe that the core idea, of what GOLB and the Lich represent won't change as much. Even when the Lich became Sweet P it seems to connect with this, death will always be scary in its own way, but maybe it can be tamed and made purposeful, but only once we embrace it's one of the few constants of life: everything will eventually change and one day even our existing itself will change into non-existence. I think that Betty becoming GOLB is a similar take on this: everything must end, but by embracing this and letting it happen and letting go when its time, we get to master and control the power of the end. Only when we realize that things have to end by their own nature, and no external thing can prevent that, can we control and choose that, when it gets to be the time, things end under our terms, and also decide it isn't time and see what else may come if we keep at it.
