There are some interesting spots along the river there. Some look great but disappoint, others don't look so good but with some work pay out very well. I reckon it's partly to do with the man-made changes to the local catchment area, much of it is flood-gold, and the bedrock can often be several metres below the sand and gravel, so false bottoms come into play. It's possible to get over a gram of gold a day just panning, especially after some decent rain. As for gems, they're definitely there, but patchy. I've found quite a few, including nice cutters, over the years - topaz, zircon, Black spinel, sapphire.
