Today we are up testing a homemade Gold Dredge on New Zealand's West Coast, sadly it didn't entirely go to plan but still walked away with a gold haul of chunky gold!

Hi everyone, just an update, we figured the pump was definitely the problem and we need a stronger one and not the dredge setup itself, there was a bit of miscommunication between everyone to begin with on whether the pump would work well or not, big thanks to Derek, Alex, the claim owner and guys at DredgeNZ for making this dredge and trip possible

Not quite the 2 ozers you were hoping for. Suction did seem way down. Possibly the wrong pump set up. Needs a volume/pressure pump. That was hardly pulling the skin off a rice pudding.

I agree, an engine that size should run a 4" dredge easy.... it looked like a 3"?😊

Great to see another video from you guys. I'm always looking forward to the next one. We set up a claim for about $8,000 but it took over 12 months with NZPAM. Still worth it in the long run although claim holders need to submit an annual return including a cost of about $1,200 per year for a recreational claim. We've got quite a bit of river that is too rough to get the 4inch dredge into so will try a 2 inch next summer. We will bite the bullet and get a Keene 2inch from Charlie at DredgeNZ who has been very helpful with our current 4inch set up. Sometimes you've got to pay the money to get the results. Thanks heaps, stoked you enjoyed! That sounds awesome great you managed to set up a claim, we are hoping to set up our own soon have a creek we are eyeing up. If you want any pointers we are always here to help, on the west coast and Otago we have jusd under 20 gold fossicking areas which are creeks you can freely go and sluice and pan in, you just need to make or buy some gear, learn the basics (which we can help with) then go for it!

Yeah definitely will be great to try another one again in future and hopefully get some massive suction going. Currently I’m just making things on demand, haven’t started anything official yet, have been flat tack sadly. Thanks for watching 🤙

If you're having suction issues chances are there's an air pocket in one of the lines.

i would have never recommended to use that pump you were using. i may have said you can you it is what you have on hand or put a p180 on that engine. you have a power problem from not using a high pressure pump.

Every sluice loses gold, dream mats are great in a creek like this but can suck when dealing with fine gold and heavy blacksand.

It’s all about volume and a well set up sluice box, unfortunately your Suction dredge is not sucking properly, bad advice was taken!slice box is very dodgy, expanded metal and proper riffles is needed, Sometimes when you try and reinvent the wheel it doesn’t work, best to stick with what’s known in dredging.

For sure, didn’t go as well as we had planned, we just used the pump the guy at the gold shop suggested however definitely need a larger one. Cheers

@TheSluicers so that fire pump must be a semi trash pump, which only provides about 56 psi of pressure on max throttle, which doesn't create enough suction. A clean water high-pressure pump is what you need and provides 72 psi and above, which provides plenty of suction. It'll suck your hand onto the nozzle like a vacuum would. GPH doesn't matter it's the higher PSI that provides the suction. I had the same issue and bought a high pressure Pump and it worked great! But they're pricey mine cost $700 US. ⁠@@Pa.PatriotProspectingSorry just realised he didn’t suggest the pump (I’m not the creator of the dredge you see). It was a yeah trashy one, but he reckoned it would work. It did work but wasn’t amazing, will have to get a better one in future. Will definitely look to upgrade and get a real good one in future. Thanks heaps for the advice, very useful
