Far beyond the Caribbean, lies an entirely different ocean. It is said that pools of algae gather on the surface to bloom and redden into blood. Ancient tribes have treaded its barren shoreline - Prophets - and strange, gigantic animals wet their hooves in its brine... but it is an ocean, far beyond the Caribbean.

This all really screams to be adapted into a movie, but hey, the general public thinks of the Caribbean when they hear "Pirates". Though honestly, I think it could be an interesting aesthetic with such a setting.

700-tons Portuguese ship "Nossa Senhora do Cabo" was ex-Dutch ship of the line "Zeelandia", 72/74 guns; she was built in 1710 in Amsterdam and sold to the Portuguese navy in 1717. After her capture she was under the command of John Taylor, and Olivier Levasseur was commander of the 380-tons ex-East Indiaman 'Cassandra', they had exchange when Taylor decided to sail back into the Caribbean and Levasseur got the "Nossa Senhora do Cabo".

I have been very interested in this period of piracy as apparent in Discord. This video is a wonderful overview. BTW I do think there might have been a reference to a pirate named North in some of the stuff I shared in Discord, but Ghop surely invented stuff of the Red Sea men. Anyways, great stuff and I hope these vids gets the attention they deserve. Very interesting quote also at the start, had never heard of the book. Cannot wait for Every and Buccaneer stuff coming in the future. Cheers!

I was wondering, do you ever plan on releasing a video about researching the Golden Age of Piracy? I'd be interested in seeing what resources there are, and what books you would recommend on the subject.

Interestingly I encountered an anecdotal case which I wanted to share as I do not think is known at all: In 1663 a "secret company" was established in Sweden to organize Red Sea piracy. A Dutchman turned Swede named Henrik Gerritsen (Swedish noble name Sjöhielm) was to command an expedition to the Red Sea with a man of war 'Falken'. After a few prizes in the Red Sea Gerritsen betrayed his employers and Swedish funders as he sold his ship to Portuguese at Goa. He run away to Holland where he died after. I read of this in an old book by Fennoswedish author Eirik Hornborg who made a decent book back in 1927/8 (relatively speaking only of course, it has a lot of research of Barbary pirates, but of course only basic buccaneers and Johnson's generic basic pirates with these small Swedish anecdotes). Sadly the book is only printed in Swedish and Finnish. The Swedish tittle is Sjörövare. Skildringar ur sjöröveriets hävder author Eirik Hornborg printed in 1927 or 1928.

the historical record will tell you the first Europeans who asserted their dominance in the Indian ocean were the Portuguese, yet oddly enough you skipped a whole century of history to get to your French pirates. however, within the span of just 80 years the Portuguese annihilated 700 years of Muslim control of that ocean, whether trough piracy or military conquest. but the Portuguese were the first European pirates in the Indian ocean , Red sea, Persian gulf ,Arabian sea, Bay of Bengal , Gulf of Thailand, South China sea, Malaysia, Indonesia, China , Japan etc, etc . i mean how do you not mention any of that.? you either hit a blind spot in your research, or you're being intellectually lazy. but out of good faith I'm going to assume the former not the latter.

@@GoldandGunpowder you mentioned that Portuguese & Spanish sailed around Africa.? where the hell are getting your sources. ? it was the Portuguese not the Spanish who made that voyage as those were Portugal's waters. any middle schooler knows that one. but you mention it vaguely anyway. but no mention of Portuguese pirating in that region. lazy on your part. Portugal had a century of pirating in the Indian ocean and the Pacific off the Chinese coast and Japan long before the first English, Dutch or French ships ever appeared in those waters. and you never mention how Portuguese pirates were the first Europeans to prey on Muslim shipping in that region, or how the first Western pirates to appear off the coast of China & Japan were Portuguese. but the reason most people don't know this is because intellectual lazy doofus like yourself are agenda driven and don't do your research and spread fake news.
