At the end of an an unusual 13-inch snowfall on the last day of September 2015 in Fairbanks, Alaska, Kristen Rozell saw a golden-crowned kinglet on a windowsill. The bird, rarely seen this far north, was stunned. She coaxed it back to peppiness with a few drops of sugar water applied to its beak. The female then flew off to perch in a snow-covered spruce tree.
