A look at a black breasted red pullet versus a golden duckwing chick. I breed golden duckwing and silver duckwings. When I hatch black breasted reds from my golden duckwings they will always be pullets. I hope my explanation makes sense to you. These chicks hatched today 6/02/2018

Hi Megan, Its hard to explain but let me try. Chicken colors are based on 5 allels. Black, Birchen, Wheaten, Wild Type and Brown. Golden Duckwing, Silver Duckwing and Black Breasted Red can all be achieved on both the Wheaten and the Wild Type color allels. In adult males it can be nearly impossible to tell if a bird is wheaten or wild type or a mix of both. The hens however show exactly what they are. I would recommend looking at pictures of cubalayas for the wheaten allel. The black breasted red hens are based on wheaten. In the araucana large fowl. The black breasted red color should be based on wheaten. However the silver and golden duckwing are based on Wild type. It is confusing which is why it is important to be able to identify what a bird is, as early as possible. To see the difference in the wild type allel versus the wheaten. Look at the cubalaya females for wheaten and the old english game females for the wild type. I hope this helps a little.

Cash Family Farm it actually does help but it also raises a lot more questions as it relates to the genetics for these birds. Is there a resource you would recommend to study up?

A couple of books I have and refer to often are Fred P. Jeffrey " Bantam Breeding and Genetics", and Brian Reeder's " An Introduction to color forms of the Domestic Fowl", and then I really like this website and specifically the page in this link. www.edelras.nl/chickengenetics/mutations1.html, Scroll down and it gives you colors with genetic descriptions. You will also notice on that page that looking at the pictures it is difficult to tell the difference between, Wild type, Wheaten and Brown Rooster Pattern, but the hens all look very different.
