Perplexed Bay Area residents have reported hearing an ominous ringing noise emanating from the Golden Gate Bridge, which can be heard in videos taken miles away. The phenomenon is caused by wind passing through newly-installed railings designed to reduce wind resistance

Used to work as a vibrations engineer, and my job was to prevent metal work failing due to noise and vibration. Can't say for sure but high volume vibration like that is likely going to lead to metal fatigue and cause something to fail. Especially if its loud because its setting off the bridge's "resonant frequency" and the bridge is ringing in sympathy with the noise. This seems likely given how far away it can be heard.

@dalesnale
@dalesnale 4 жыл бұрын
My thought too. That is disturbingly loud. I reckon wind tunnel tests did not consider the higher frequencies that do not cause the actual span to vibrate at very low frequency (like the Tacomas Narrows Bridge). I'm an audio engineer and have seen metal fatigue damage to stamped metal speaker frames in this frequency range after many years of vibration. The resonant frequency here is 420 to 500hz with a wavelength roughly 0.77meters . I reckon, dampening by adding mass, cutting holes , or tacking on dampeners in under engineering investigation.

@Trendyflute
@Trendyflute 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ormigadesign The bridge was tolled both ways from its opening in 1937, but starting in 1968 tolling was only charged for southbound traffic. Fastrak lanes, which read an electronic pass at low speeds, were added in 2002; 2013 was the year when the last staffed toll taker booths were closed and all southbound tolling was converted to Fastrak. So I'm guessing if you didn't pay a toll in 2012, you were either heading northbound, or you took advantage of the Fastrak lanes heading southbound!

the vertical arm, that has square holes in it, so when the wind hits it, it whistles. take a coach's whistle, blow hard into it, and that's how you get that noise. it could also be that the wind is trapped underneath the structure causing the trumpeting type sounds too.

I got PhD on cable vibrarions and this is definitely unwanted behaviour. What we hear is an obvious resonance and what every engineer wants on his structure is exactly the opposite. Engineer wants all the parts to not have common resonance frequencies and the excitation from the environment to be very unlikely. Clearly maintanance costs will rise. I have not idea what are the conditions for this to heppend ut the most dangerouse conditiona are when rain and wind meet each other. Then the drops form wing profile while dripping away from the structure (cable etc.) Hopefully they will fix it soon.

I drive over the bridge twice a day, almost seven days a week. I'd never heard the sound before and couldn't imagine not noticing the sound, or the sound never being part of the folklore of SF and the GGB. I thought maybe I'd been transported to another dimension or a parallel Earth. I'm VERY relieved to find that the singing (reminds me of whalesong) is a new thing. I hope the vibrations aren't going to eventually damage anything because it's eerie but incredibly beautiful and is a gift from the cosmos.
