Sometimes my painting departs from what I'm actually seeing. This time I swap the gray sky for a golden color, and the plein-air gouache study starts to come to life.

Ok the painting is amazing, but can I just comment on how badass your video editing skills are! Setting up the split screen view with live video of the street on the bottom and painting on top at the same time and it all lines up just blows my mind. Thank you for this 2 minutes of pure inspiration!

Oh, wow, that sky just placed everything else in a totally different context! This is a perfect example of how a little improvisation in an observational painting can turn a documentary image into art. (Sadly fewer of these little markets left in the American landscape all the time!)

Production Designers, Art Directors, and even Cinematographers would benefit enormously from studying your work. The way you breakdown the form of each piece has an effective simplicity, and the emphasis on "tiling" in each color and light pattern allows for a very detailed and "lighting specific " expression of a scene; and yet the method has an economy about it, which makes it completely accessible.

Beautiful result! After turning the sky to gold, how do you determine how much to lighten the other values, like the front plane of the house?
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney Жыл бұрын
I wanted to save the lightest accents for the windows on the front plane, and make the clapboards on that side just a bit lower in value. The side of the house facing us is just a little darker an cooler.

I agree -- in that he has a relaxed, friendly manner and makes the joy of creating art more accessible to everyday people. Bob used television, and James uses social media. Growing up, I didn't know any adults who drew pictures or painted, so Bob's PBS show was a revelation. Sure, some critics categorized his wet-on-wet oil paintings as "kitsch", but his enthusiasm sparked something in my younger self that made me want to learn MORE. I am pleased (and not a little envious) of the global audience that is growing up with James' generous talent. :)
