In a wide-ranging interview at the 2nd annual Berkeley Haas Culture Conference, Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr described how he built a culture around joy, competitiveness, mindfulness, and compassion-and how he maintained it both on an off the court.
Coach Kerr was interviewed by Berkeley Haas Professors Jennifer Chatman and Sameer Srivastava, co-founders of the Berkeley Haas Culture Initiative last year. Read more about the Berkeley Haas Culture Initiative: haas.berkeley....

joyfulness, mindfulness, compassion, and competitiveness nailed it. I wish someone had asked him how you balance compassion and joyfulness in an environment as fiercely competitive as an NBA team. What a great interview!

2:30 my dad in ucla long history of teacher 4:10 culture conference 4:53 And everybody sort of said the same thing about authenticity. You have to be yourself. 5:58 I've just spent years and years designing all these plays and all." 6:58 how important it is 7:01 not just to have values but to make them come alive every single day. And so he asked me, he said, 7:15 And he said, "Well, go home and think about it." And he said, "Think about what's the most important thing in your life. 7:22 What are the most important values in your life. Not in Gregg Popovich's life or Phil Jackson's life, 7:27 in your own life. Since you're gonna be coaching these guys, they have to feel the authenticity of you.And if you come in here with genuine, real values, 7:40 and then you make them come alive, that's when the culture starts to form." And so it was a really interesting few days. ****************** 8:47 we’re in business to try to win. I just wanted to win at everything. But I just had to win, I just had to win. 9:14 I think at this level, professionally, if you not competitive,it’s gonna be really hard to be successful. And so we try to generate competition in everything we do and practice. So event if it’s a light day, we’re gonna have, we’re gonna keep score,we’re gonna have shooting drills, 9:34 somebody’s gonna win, somebody gonna lose. And the guys love it Because these guys wouldn’t have reached the NBA,if they weren’t competitive also, but you try to light that fire and there constant competition going on.(เราขาดหัวใจเอาชนะเพื่อให้ได้มา ดูถูกตัวเอง ต้องพยายามเพื่อให้ได้มาสิ ตั้งเป้าแล้วต้องทำให้ได้)(สร้างการแข่งขัน แต่ไม่อยากแข่ง ต้องออก)(เราชอบคิดผลลัพธ์แล้วถอดใจไม่ทำ อย่าไปคิด พลาดช่างมัน เริ่มใหม่ ความผิดพลาดเป็นเรื่องปกติ คนไม่เคนพลาดเลยต่างหากที่ประสบการณ์น้อย ไม่พอ คนสำเร็จต้องพลาดมากี่ครั้ง) 14:41 I came in with idea of joy, I really want joy to be a part of things. 19:54 the construction of the roster 20:14 you have to have a nice balance of Veteran player, young player. We got Andre at a good time He had already been an all star, Olympian and he want to be a part of championship team. 24:14 จะทำให้ บ ตัดสินใจถูกกับทุกปัญหาได้ยังไง ? เปิด ให้คนรู้จริงกล้าแย้ง หากรู้จริงเกินสองคน ให้ผล ตัดสิน เพราะเราต้องการผลดีที่สุดอยู่แล้ว และนั่นคือต้องมีคนเก่งอยู่ในทีม(ไม่มีใครรู้ทุกเรื่อง ต้องใช้ความเห็นจากทุกคน) 28:14 I think if you can maintain a culture through a season like this, then you can survive. And then when your circumstances get better then you can thrive, but the culture gives you that foundation and that structure. And so you don't compromise during the down period, you don't change your values, you don't change what's important, 28:42 you don't take any shortcuts, so you still stick to what you do and you do it authentically. And you trust that things are gonna turn around. 28:56 Keep going, you just keep going Sure. Sure. - And so forth. - Yeah, I think it's important for the team to know 30:04 how much I care and how much I wanna win. And I'm actually a very laid back person. 44:24 for the potential of fit in your culture? And as they come on board, how much of it is your role versus a leader like Steph's role to help assimilate them into the culture of the Warrior way? - So we do a lot of background before we sign a player, We have college scouts who not only watch the players, but try to find out as much as they can about them through media members or trainers, coaches who are friends of theirs. So we do a lot of homework, try to get guys who will fit in. 45:00 And then once the player is here, it's nothing that's discussed, It's just continuing to approach our day(เลือกมาดีแล้ว ก็ไม่ต้องมาคุยกันอีก ที่เหลือคือมุ่งพัฒนาให้เข้าใกล้เป้าหมายให้เร็วที่สุด เรื่องอื่นไม่ต้องมาคุยกันอีกแล้ว) 45:12 the way we approach it. Trying to make those values that we talked about in the beginning come alive. 45:20 And the players will feel that, if it's authentic they'll feel it. And as they're assimilating, 45:29 they get more and more comfortable. And again, I think enjoying, 45:35 coming to work is just a huge part of it. And so trying to create the environment 45:44 that will allow for that is key for us. 47:37 the best you can is key. ทำให้ดีที่สุดที่สามารถทำได้คือ key 53:39 and we're using a lot of different technology. 53:44 In practice, we've got cameras in our facility where players are, will actually shoot the ball and they'll hear the angle of the degree of arc on their shot and there'll be an audio, and so I think players are embracing it. And so I think the, 54:05 probably the best thing that comes from it is the players understanding that (we're just trying to make them better ต้องสร้างผลให้ดีขึ้นทุกวัน) and help them get better. And we're searching for every possible way.%FG สำคัญ อะไรจะช่วยให้ % การยิงสูงขึ้น(sale สำคัญ)

That’s interesting! This country is in great need of ‘ Change’, as well as this World. That doesn’t mean that he or that we need a perfect person; we do need more human beings to be ‘ more mindful’.

In my work life I thought about team building a lot, and authenticity was a big concern. After retirement I watched some basketball, but it was actually the Steves -- Ketr and Nash -- who got me back into it. Watching the Warriors win was a joy, and I thought about team a lot, really a lot. But the last couple of years I've stuck with the Warriors. The winning wasn't there but the team was, and I was deeply interested in how they would get back to the winning. I gues now we know. I really enjoyed this talk. I had a chance to meet Bill Walsh and hear him talk about teams, and that was also memorable as was this discussion.

There's an eclectic quality about his experience and Ws culture . In fact it's so American " cultural borrowing " from a big stream of streams yet its still centered on survival continuous improvement and winning. If there's a seminal question that's like the yeast for the culture it's " What works ?" If it works you use it till it doesn't, but in such an intense competitive environment around competitors you need fun, relaxation, and joy time to sharpen the saw , retrieve the fragmentation, and reintegrate. Imagine a rubiks cube where the colors change on being dialed . Teams are a thing in motion , travel, injuries, economics, competitors , age , loss of focus, attrition, entropy, and rebirth. Can you assimilate around your core.

This guy should definitely run for The President of the United States... He ticks all the right boxes in leadership. I know its sports but its still running a successful organization to ultimate dominance.... Winner, Intelligent, Articulate, Competitive, Classy, Witty, Compassionate, Purpose, Ambitious, Great work-ethic, Authentic, Innovative, empathetic, well travelled/read and experienced etc... Plus his activism againt gun violence thus giving him an actual cause that is a real disaster in the country. The democrats should really beg him to run. Its soo out of the left field, If the republicans can nominate actors and reality celebrities in Regan and Trump.... Why not a Coach as the leader of the free world, wow. That would be perfect. Right age also nearing to enter his 60s.

5:27. On men talking to other men. About 90% of the ppl I associate with (friends, family, social media contacts) are females of all ages, from little girls to old ladies and everything in between. I feel more confortable having a conversation with a woman than with another man. That was a problem with my first wife and my second one too. Both were jealous of my female cousins and friends but that's just the way I am.

You can really tell when an academic host an interview, they ask meaningful questions but there is no interaction between the guest and the interviewer, it’s almost like she’s waiting for him to finish what Steve Kerr says, so she can ask the next question and check off the question box.
