There is, simply, not enough physical evidence to understand what happened in this period. Any attempt at answering the questions, without more evidence, only makes for interesting conversation. Nothing more. At the moment, we only have dim sketches of what happened. Period.

Nefertiti was Nefer-neferu-Aten. I hope someday her tomb will be discovered. When I was 16 years old I had a dream that she was buried in a tomb near that of her husband Akhenaten in the eastern wadi from Akhut-Aten (known as Amarna today).

One of my favourite quotes on humanity, which is especially apt when addressing conundrums like this (and is superbly demonstrated here) is that "our questions unite us, our answers divide us". All of these hypotheses expounded here ask the same questions, in that the various experts agree. However, with such a garbled period in history as was the "post Amarna" period, to aim for concrete answers will lead to the protagonists that opt for any single answer to ignore key questions that might point the finger of doubt upon their own chosen answer. We simply do not (and may never have) enough information to be fixed in our interpretations of such fragmentary evidence. To me, the Nefertiti angle is the most logical as she was a senior figure and had been the great wife of the king. Meritaten, though, does have some claim for similar reasons (she was Smenkhare's wife, or so it would appear) The third hypothesis is therefore the most tenuous. That does not, however, mean that is is impossible.

The third hypothesis is actually the one providing a rational answer to all the questions, as you suggest should be done ("not ignoring key questions that might point the finger of doubt"), as well as best matching the material culture. It is the most economic one (in terms of lex parcimoniæ) as it does not require a lot of complicated scenarios. What it does not do, however, is match our own etic vision of how succession should work, because Neferneferuaten was not the eldest daughter. Egyptologists consider that everything Meritaten could have ever wanted was to become pharaoh, whereas she was obviously more useful as a royal spouse, being the only one likely to produce offspring. For the same reason, a "senior figure" might not have been the best choice to keep a dying out dynasty alive. Although the Nefertiti option might sound the most "logical" (again, from our modern point of view, where ego often takes precedence over the interests of State), it has to face many counter arguments and does not match the material culture.

For me IT was Like this. Amenhotep III married His elderly daughters and sitamun was great royal Queen and heiress to the throne. So amenhotep lV married His sister and she changed her Name to nerfertiti. Then amenhotep lV changed His Name to akhenaton. After death from akhenaton she Rules AS king neferneferuaton. Like manetho says: a Queens daughter became Pharao. Then she changed her Name from neferneferuaton to semenkare. To keep distance her raign from akhenaton raign. After her death tutankhaton became Pharao. Then He changed Name to tutankhamun. There was No Male semenkare. A Male Pharao semenkare would never choose a throne Name Close related to neferneferuaton. AnkhcheperuRA ist the throne Name from neferneferuaton. This is a good hint that semenkare was neferneferuaton and that was nerfertiti! AnkhcheperuRA was throne Name. We found this Name with feminin t Letter. AnkhTcheperuRA. There are No evidence that Meritaton became Pharao! The daughter neferneferuaton from akhenaton and nerfertiti would be to Young for Pharao. IT IS clear that First became Meritaton Queen and after death of Pharao AnkhcheperuRA semenkare (neferneferuaton) tutankhamun became Pharao with ankhesampaamun as great royal Queen. I will doubt there was a daughter named neferneferuaton will choose before ankhesampaamun. This makes No sence. And WE have for this theory No Evidenz as Well.

Nefertiti also held the name Nefer-neferu. Nefer-neferu ta Sherit was “the younger” (similar to jr.) because she was named after Nefertiti.

This is all very interesting, but somehow neither of these theories seem to make sense without bending logic. The problem is, in my opinion, that we still assume that Tutankhamun was Akenathen‘s son, even though there is apparently no proof that Akhenaten really had a son. Where does Smenkhare come into play if Akhenaten had a male heir? Why would Smenkhare follow on the throne before Tutankhamun? That doesn’t make sense. This would only make sense if Tutankhamun wasn’t Akhenaten‘s son but the son of Akhenaten‘s heir on the throne, which would be Smenkhare. In my opinion the following could have happened: Smenkhare (probably a brother of Akhenaten) becomes coregent, because Akhenaten doesn’t have a male heir. After the death of Akhenaten Smenkhare becomes pharaoh. Smenkhare and his great royal wife Meritaten have a son (Tutankhamun). Soon after taking the throne Smenkhare dies and his great royal wife (Meritaten) becomes pharaoh, because her son is still too young to take the throne. After her death Tutankhamun follows her on the throne with his great royal wife Ankhesenpaaton. This would mean that the mummy found in KV55 would be Smenkhare and the mummy called the younger lady would be Meritaten (aka pharaoh Neferneferuaten). It might also explain why Smenkhare and Neferneferuaten had the same throne name (Ankhcheperure). It would also be an explanation for the dna mystery regarding the fetuses found in Tutankhamun‘s tomb. In my opinion this theory would be a far more logical explanation

I see it as the amun priesthood will accept a continuation of the blood line, but the boy must be king. But the family can not allow him to rule under the influence of the amun priesthood, so a compromise is accepted, the sister will rule until the boy com of age an can act on his one. Its all to stop a civil war from breaking out

Funny how for many only the appearance is of interest when it comes to Egypt - modern or new - instead of anything the people have ever done. I wish, we would have more presentation about the average life of Egyptians of the past though Neferuneferuaten’s case is an interesting.
