I owned these speakers for two years. I have had ultra high end speakers at 6-7 times the price since. But I have never had as much fun and soulful experiences as I did with these! I think I will have to repurchase them. I can't stop missing the Triton References. Amazing Value!

@@anadialog yeah well but it is true. Some have been more refined and detailed and all that, but the dynamics, the incredible bass and the ability to sound good on everything is quite unique! They just gave me a foot-tapping experience like nothing else. Also they had an amazing 3d! For my non audiophile friends that have heard all my setups still rave about those Tritons, and how insanely impressive they thought they were.

@@audiolife5038 The bass is far from incredible and mediocre with regards to speed and control. Contrary to what Guido and GE claims, the speakers aren't flat to 12Hz. GE does what Polk and Def Tech did regarding frequency response and what Klipsch does with sensitivity - they lie. The Tritons do everything reasonably well but not greatly by any means.

Pretty thorough analysis. It's pretty crazy how some speakers reveal the sound engineer, in addition to the equipment you have. It really takes a great pair of ears and constant listening to attempt to figure it all out. Then, when you throw in your set up concerning the speakers, that makes it even more maddening. We should be so lucky, to have receivers that can at least help us make that adjustment. Unfortunately, I don't know a tube amplifier that can possibly do that.

I’ve heard these and love the sound, but the 1R’s sounded very nearly as good to my ears for much less. I wish there were more options without the built in sub (other than the Triton 5), since where these best image is not likely to be best for bass response ( which, btw, doesn’t extend to 12 hz, though it is very good). Additionally, there’s always the risk of amp failure, which was apparently quite common on the Def Tech’s built in subs. I didn’t think the midrange was lacking, but I didn’t have anywhere near the time with them. Since the midrange is where vocals live, a lack here would be a deal breaker for me. There’s no perfect speaker, but this checks a lot of boxes for many people. Excellent long term perspective!

I owned the Triton one.5 for several years and really liked them. But I wanted to try a horn speaker and after reading virtually all superlative reviews, bought the Klipsch Cornwall IV. After about 100 hours I could understand what everybody was talking about. Many had criticized previous Klipsch versions as too aggressive. Not this Cornwall; it’s a completely different animal that fills the room with sound. The soundstage is amazing though not necessarily pinpoint accuracy. The bass, which I thought I’d miss after the Tritons is wonderful! Though it goes down to 34 Hz, it truly is very satisfying and I found I didn’t miss the extra bass one bit. In fact, though the Cornwall, does not go that deep, I find it much more satisfying than the Triton. All in all, it’s a superb speaker which, I’d have to say gives me more enjoyment than the Triton. I also love the retro look and the wood veneers are beautiful.
@anadialog
@anadialog Жыл бұрын
Eric, you are actually depicting what I am trying/would love to do. I don't have enough room, or better I would need to sacrifice something, in order to get a pair of Klipschorn. Also the Cornwalls seem fantastic in any case the direction I want to get soon. Great choice!
@ericlubow4354
@ericlubow4354 Жыл бұрын
Guido- I think the Cornwall would work fine in smaller rooms. Then there’s always the Forte IV which has also gotten great reviews, is smaller but doesn’t go as deep. There are lots of reviews of the Cornwall on KZfaq but the one I really like is done by Stjernholm Reviews maybe out of Denmark? Obviously, I can’t link it here but you can type it into KZfaq to find. He’s quite funny and really gives you a feeling of why so many love this speaker. It’s more expensive in Europe, I believe. I run mine with a Rogue Cronus Magnum tube amp but you really don’t need that many watts. I’m in my seventies so this will obviously be my last speaker but even if I was 30 years younger, I’d probably feel the same way. The strangest thing is this speaker never sounds bad. With my other speakers, I would always have days where the sound was disappointing, the reason I can’t really say- maybe my ears on that day. But with the Cornwalls, everyday is a good day. I don’t know why that is-possibly to do with its efficiency, who knows. Anyway, I’m so glad I gave this a try. It’s really a fun and satisfying speaker.

I appreciate your videos. If you've heard speakers with midranges you like more, those might be the ones you would enjoy more. The midrange is what it's all about. For me, the bass is only the icing on the cake. I do need it to be tight and tuneful. I do not need it to be that deep. Speakers with very deep bass; well let's just say that it often adversely affects the mid and upper bass, The absence of real low bass has the audible effect of making the mid and upper bass sound more articulate, without all that booming and banging going on down below. I'm sure I'm missing a few things without the very lowest bass; hall ambient cues probably being the most missed thing. But I like my mid and upper bass to sound crisp, taut and fleet. I find the mid and upper bass to be the far more interesting frequency range than the frequencies below that. My priority is where it belongs.I do need bass that is at least of a useable amplitude down to 35 hz. I've never heard the speaker, so I won't comment on it. Some say there are a lot of overly complex over designed products on the market, and they are usually expensive. Sometimes simpler is better. I can't believe how good built in DACs in cd players can be sometimes. I don't doubt they could be bettered; just amazed how good they can be at such a low cost; and they must have cost very little. For those who care about little else than themidrange, and as long as their bass isn't a muddle and their treble is good enough to fall smoothly on the ears, I think there are plenty of people who have simple but highly satisfying systems for not that much money. You don't hear much about the vintage time delay systems which became popular in the 1980s. They delay the signal to the back channel speakers for a fraction of a second to simulate the longer arrival times of sound reflections in a much bigger space. If used correctly they can persuasively sound like you are listening in a much bigger space. Anything from a Jazz club to a cathedral. They don't mess with the front channels. Although the focus of the front channels seem to sometimes suffer a bit. What the delayed signal does for bass reproduction which is wonderful, might be worth that sacrifice.

Don't get me wrong, the mids are great but if I have to indicate what I prefer less (just a bit), that is probably the part I would point at and yes, I agree mids are fundamental. There are amazing horn-loaded speakers or full-range drivers touching only 40/50hz and they sound amazing. We can live without bass but not without middle-range.

Hi , really enjoyed this video. As a fellow Golden Ears owner, ( Triton one.R), I would appreciate your opinion on connecting within a fairly large home theatre. I have 2 large powered subs. Should I set my AVR fronts as , “small “ leaving the Tritons only to see 80 hz and above? Or should I set to full range ( large) via the speaker level inputs? But potentially causing cancellation of bass with the subs? Or, run a split cable from LFE channel to Tritons, and speaker wire to them in the small setting? My goal is to have the Tritons use the capabilities they have with the bass potential and their amp together with my big subs for max impact. I think right now, using as small front, I’m not even using the built in amp or bass woofers under 80 hz. Seems wasteful?? My AVR essentially driving just the midrange and tweeter? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. 😊
@anadialog
@anadialog 8 ай бұрын
How there! Well, these Tritons already have amazing frequency extension. I know this may not be the answer you are looking for but you really don’t need the subs. Ok, IF you want more volume (surely not frequency range) for the bass then the best option without doing nothing is just to tune by the ear and decide but remember that there is going to be a big juxtaposition and the lower register will be smeared. If you really want to use them and get the maximum from your system the only way is to have somebody use a dedicated crossover because of you cut at 80hz I am afraid the subs aren’t going to go around that. If they do then, yes use them as small.

Not surprised that the Triton bass does not integrate well. No surprise that the mid-range is less convincing especially considering your previous speakers. Obviously the Triton is incredibly impressive though… that’s a whole lot of speaker and technology!!! However as with most highly (overly) engineered designs with a mix of technologies - DSP bass, passive radiators, a multitude of low cost drivers, a ribbon tweeter etc - you aren’t going to get reference quality fidelity that integrates drivers perfectly or remains consistent at very high SPL as well as very low SPL. However this is absolutely incredible value and probably one of the most impressive sounding speakers at that price point. I would also worry about long term reliability - I would be scared to crank these as 12 Hz is ridiculously silly or will be pointlessly distorted without some Italian made 21” woofers with 6 inch voice coils in big boxes - that is just the reality of acoustics and physics!

Hi Guido. How is the sound stage/perspective when it comes to height? Does the singer sound like standing up or being down on the knees? Do you get an impression of the height of the ceiling on recordings from jazz clubs or concert halls etc? Or do they suffer from the same problem as any other speaker with the tweeter placed between the other units? You mention not having the optimal sound stage/perspective otherwise (though still good), but not a word about the height perspective. Can you drop a few lines about it to satisfy this curious bastard? The very best wishes from Denmark. Stay awesome Mate.

The high position of the mid-drives and tweeters helps in delivering a convincing vertical soundstage, almost better than the horizontal one, but as soon as the recording isn't well engineered the speakers reveal that, they're unforgiving unfortunately.

Love the channel but disagree about sensitivity and tube amps, really doesn’t mean anything. It’s all about the impedance curve and phase angles. These Tritons, based on their measurements, would not be a good match for tubes. I’m not surprised you didn’t like the mid band as it would have been exaggerated from 2k-4k. Bet you didn’t keep it paired with the tube amp, just not a good match. Anyways, check out some articles on the topic. Your channel is the best on KZfaq.
@anadialog

What I mean obviously is that tube amps usually have less power than SS that is why one seeks for low sensitivity and possibly a high impedance, even though tubes are much better at handling funky impedences. The designer of the speakers presented them several times at shows with Primaluna tube amps.

Assembled in China, delivered to USA. That is how they could keep this price low. Also our Apple devices are made there 👍🏼 Quality control is top notch anyway.

Oh you mean the entire production? Here is the full story: The company is based in Maryland, the Design and Engineering team is in Ottawa Canada, parts are sourced from over 20 different countries, final assembly is in China, QC/inspection/warehousing is in Kentucky.

Sandy Gross designs are quality sound at affordable (relative to high end) prices. I've owned Definitive Technology ST and ST-L, and have auditioned GoldenEar Triton One and the Reference. My favorite are the Def Tech ST-L due to their great highs and much more expansive soundstage than the Triton Reference. The biggest downside is that the inbuilt amps that drive the built in subwoofer will go bad for sure. If you listen at 95 dbs or above on daily basis, the amps will only last 3-5 years. That's the case for Deftech and Goldenear. This will be the downfall of all active speakers.

I am sure they will fail sooner or later but not that soon...the speakers are already about 4 years old.

I own these. Here’s a secret. They don’t hit 12hz haha. Not at all. They hit 24hz. And then it drops like a rock. 24hz guys. Love GE, but their marketing it’s a total falsity. Just like the 1800w sub haha. It’s a good speaker. The highs are narrow, I agree.

indeed they keep getting away with lie after lie. Does anyone know the actual wattage?

A typical error that you should know better: Class D has nothing to do with digital. It refers to converting the linear signal to pulses for a simplified method of (analog) amplification. There is no digital encoding. It's called Class D simply because A, B, and C classes were already defined. The pulses are strictly analog in format. Look it up. Shame on you!

No typical error if not your fast judgment. It's not the Class D to which I was referring to but the DSP.

It has now become common practice in many places to translate “Class D” as “digital”. In terms of technology history, however, it was “D”’s turn as a category after the letters “A”, “B” and “C” had already been assigned to other amplifier classes that came up earlier. Since we also talk about switching amplifiers and the output stage is actually either “on” or “off”, the simplifying analogy to digital technology is obvious: this also works with binary values (0/1 - off/on). However, an essential feature of digital technology - the fixed number of stages in the absence of intermediate values (the word width, e.g. 16 bits) - does not exist in Class D circuits. It is therefore perfectly permissible to speak colloquially about “digital amplifiers” if everyone understands the same thing by it. Why some people find it worthwhile to constantly point out their “mistakes” in a rude and know-it-all manner should be clarified with their in-house psychologist.

Every company Sandy Gross has been associated with lies about the specs. You notice there is no plus or minus qualifier with the frequency response. 12Hz my butt. I can't stand reviewers who just repeat specs without qualifiers even. All Golden Ear speakers don't resolve bass really well. I don't know what this reviewer is talking about when he mentions transients as these speakers also are only average with regard to transients.

Not a reviewer. Check my channel better. I am presenting my impressions, not a benchmark analysis. That is what people want from my channel and how I enjoy doing it. I present the specs that I find, not my job to refute the data.

They should REALLY stop calling it subwoofers. Powered bass is something different. Consider the low output down below. 12hz? At -20db? LOL
