I was a teenager and watched the occupation from binoculars from the Pier with my dad who owned a store near the Marina . . . the occupation and Vietnam protests had a lifelong impact on me and my belief system. I had great respect for the people who took a stand for what they believed in . . .

I feel I was born in the wrong era. As I would have fully supported their activism and it's a human caused pathetic tragedy that they EVER HAD TO DO THIS.

My grandmother, my mom and her sisters were there. Now you can go look at the museum, in one part of the museum i think its 2-3 pictures down but youll come face to face with a strong indigenous woman staring you down with her 3 children. Thats my grandmother 🖤🖤

Came here from Serbia(eastern europe),trying to learn and understand native american perspective history. Best regards from a country where they care about tradition,amd where we die every day because of it,just like native Americans are.

Adding this would mean admitting why this happened in the first place Native history should be a class of its own with many textbooks or our way no books instead elders telling stories of the old ways and how to live in a good way now a days!

Adam Fortunate eagle always gives himself a lot of credit. Not many people on the island considered him an Alcatraz leader. He was calling to the swimmers to come back and get on the boat, ruining his photo op. Also everyone always shows a picture of the wrong daughter when they talk about Richard losing his daughter Yvonne.

My great grandparents lived there after the prison shut down.. John and Marie Hart. My mother was raised there from 1962 to 1970. Because her father was the night Watchman. Crazy. Great gramps was one of the only people that live there after they shut down. I just saw an article from 1969 in the San Francisco Chronicle when they interviewed him. So that's why I'm looking up stuff now :-)

Shameful the way these indigenous people were removed,displaced and robbed of their identity.promises and pledges made by so called civilised governments completely dishonoured.greed and capitalism overruled the need to do the right thing. It must be heartbreaking for the Indian tribes to witness the destruction to the environment that they held sacred. It's long past the time for American government to make some gesture of decency to the wronged

Well, yes and no. In 2005 due to loss of accreditation, they stopped offering a full-time class schedule, but continue to have various activities to maintain their non-profit status

I will say what I feel really need to be said,it was the first time in native history that the youth of the 7th.generation stood up for their people when everyone else stood still.I watched everything on lanada you have to be crazy if you think you can argue with that kind of intelligence.lamad...warrior woman..you earned it.

Is this the full documentary? I feel like it used to be longer, and this one seems to start abruptly. I'm trying to show it to my students, but I'd prefer the full version--can't seem to find anywhere! (I saw the ABC one that was posted last year, but I'm not crazy about it. This one is better in its full version).

Why is Dennis Banks speaking on Alcatraz occupation? He and the American Indian Movement were not involved

Dennis and Clyde, among others, formed AIM in 1968, in response to racism of the police in Minneapolis....the Alcatraz occupation gave more notice to Indian activism, and thus helped propel the cause of AIM and others. John Trudell was AIM spokesman thru most of the 70s......so I believe Dennis was interviewed, as he was an activist at that time, and it acknowledges the movement of all Indian activist groups. That's what I got out of it.

Dennis banks Clyde Bellecourt Russell Means were the co-founder of the American Indian movement And participate in 1968 and 1969 on Alcatraz. And from 1969 to 1971 John Trudell and Richard Oakes and many more on Alcatraz were spoke speakers for A.I.M. .. Aim should have been protesting for better laws by keeping our children safe. And for the forests of our wildlife creature and farmlands where the horses the cows and the chickens live. everything gone made by cement and concrete. Trees are gone so are the blue birds. . have no room not even for vegetables and fruits to grow. Especially in California. Sad how beautiful once was this country was. Now it nothing not broken down buildings full of trash trash trash. No more fresh water. Not even to drink. Soon America will have a food shortage. And will be gone. None of our animals will survive when they're surrounded by cities made with cement and concrete. Without trees.or grass to eat. Or to let wild horses run free.. nothing but in cages. Sad country our Native land once our ancestors was very proud of the land that were free to ride on wild. horses. Instead taking oil from the land.

No, and sharks aren't as dangerous as most media and industries present it. There are sharks in the bay but if u just normally avoid it it should be fine

@@robertmartinez8576 The Rock was considered out of use surplus property (as the Nixon administrator said in the video) and the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the federal government and sioux said all out of use, abandoned, or retired federal land could be reclaimed by native americans. They should have legally been allowed
