Goldenweiser was born two years later than Rachmaninoff. In a russia under the zsar. he survived the communism, he survived two world wars and he did live till the early 60ties. so his influence on russian pianists is very important. and he transmitted the spirit of 19th century interpretation. when he was a child Tchaikovsky was still alive.

Goldenweiser Igumnov Neuhaus were the three God at Moscow conservatory! I would advise to see the following link It is interesting to think what did they think of Rachmaninov that was enough exile and litterary escaped because was terrified by bolșevismului. There are many stories about it.For example it seems then kommunists went to his estate in Ivanovka they brought with them everything they could.When they saw the grand piano at first floor,they didn't know what to do and decide to throw it form the balcony out on ground...

Interestingly, Ginzburg died just 10 days after his teacher Goldenweiser passed away. Just coincidence or is there some connection?

I just found this. He had a heartattack in 1960 - and by they discovered a cancer as well. That cancer killed him nine days after the death of his beloved teacher. dmitryrachmanov.com/pdf/Pianistmarch-april2008.pdf

For me there are more dynamics in the performance of Argerich&Zilberstein

goldenweiser was a composer so he did understand very well the emotional context the meaning of the different harmonies and so on. he was educated in 19th century. so its not possible to expect the same quality of interpretation of Martha Argerich who was only pianist in her life. a very hard working one and so not uninteresting pianist but not to compare to pianists like goldenweiser.

@@Queeen7q What does "Jewish-born" mean? Is Jewish a nationality? Were they not Russian when they were born? What is the point of stressing their religion? Tsarist Russia and the following Soviet regime were permeated by antisemitism. The USSR did have a "Jewish nationality" written on passports. That's why I consider this comment "Jewish-born" as of particularly bad taste, and reminding a sinister period.
@Queeen7q

@@brkahn Yes, in Russia 'Jewish' is a nationality. Because the way of thinking and values of a Jew, on average, differs significantly from the outlook of a Russian. :-) And it does not depend on the religiosity of the person. >and reminding a sinister period. The "sinister period" has not gone anywhere. Most Russians think the old way, and you know that very well.
