Goldfish & Angelfish | Good or BAD Idea?

Many times online I have seen Angelfish being kept with Goldfish in the same aquarium. My initial reaction was that this combination is a bad idea. In this video I wanted to discuss if these two species can be safely kept together and if I would personally ever try to combination.

I think it’s alright and it will work. It often depends on the size of the tank like one angelfish and then one fancy goldfish in a 125 gallon will probably work out.

I find most posted parameters are referring to the wild habitat. Very few common hobby fish have ever seen that. Goldfish in outdoor southern state ponds probably see mid 80's or higher a large portion of their life.

Yeah that makes sense. On my website I tried to give the largest average range I've seen from all trusted sources. It would be great to see more studies done on different species to gauge how well different parameters affect lifespan, growth and such. Most species only have one or two studies so it's hard to use them as a definitive source of truth.

Great video on the topic. Good commentary, that tank is sweet btw. I have a 110g planted angelfish tank with one large Severum and was considering getting one goldfish because they’re such cool fish.

@@TheAquaticCoder so in a twist of irony I put a fantail goldfish in the tank with a large Severum and 8 koi angelfish. They get along great and no aggression at all. But … a week later most of my angels and especially the Severum have parasites and Ich real bad. It was definitely the goldfish that did that. Treating the tank now and praying that I don’t lose any fish.

@@Skysmeller1 Ah bummer, sorry to hear that. I hope everyone recovers quick. Unfortunately situations like this is why it is recommended to quarantine. For larger fish like a goldfish that isn't always possible though

@@TheAquaticCoder I have a 10 gallon tank on the side and should have quarantined with meds. so far lost a drawled Peruvian catfish I had for 3 years he was a one inch cool little fish I felt terrible. My loach is looking bad now and the rest of the fish look like they’re recovering. Let’s see. On the good news the goldfish gets along with everyone

Hi. Thanks for the video. I just want to share that right now I have 7 angels and 2 fantail goldfish in a 55 gal. that I have been raising since they were all tiny and frail. Temp is 76 degrees. They are all fine and thriving, so far. There is also a common pleco in the tank who has grown to 9 inches. No one is stressed. However, between the goldfish and the pleco, I have to do frequent want changes. Eventually, I will have to separate all these fish simply because they will outgrow the tank, not just in terms of size but maintaining water parameters. At 76 degrees Finnyus and Ophelia (the two big fantails) are active and are exhibiting breeding behavior. Your comment that at 76 degrees they might not live as long caught my attention. I realize their metabolism is faster at 76 degrees but do you think that equates to shorter lifespan? I'm concerned and will research this. People who have a faster metabolism don't burn out and die younger. Do goldfish who live in tropical waters or ponds at higher temps live shorter lives?

Keeping fish as higher temperatures is generally thought to shorten their lifespan from what I've read / watched. It definitely is worth looking further into if you are curious. I have not personally looked at specific studies and only heard this from other hobbiests. So if you find out conflicting information I'd love to hear back
