You can tell by the sound of the material when it hits the pan, gold is more dense than that. Clearly painted a few rocks gold buried them in a nice easy dig People shake and scream when they find less than that.

Surely if you were using a metal detector having retrieved one nugget, you would scan the hole and the dirt removed from the hole before continuing digging. Only time he uses his detector again is after he finds all the gold in the first hole, which also had suspiciously loose soil.
