Fantastic ! There is so much great information in this video that I don’t think a beginner can fully appreciate that these positions are part of the foundation of a sound golf swing. It has literally taken me 35 years to figure out these positions without the aid of videos that we have at our fingertips now. There is absolutely no reason why someone with average physical ability, and understanding, would not be able to play decent golf and shorten the learning curve with teaching like this available. As usual, great video Eric.

Your Right wrist back video (and mention here) is pure gold. One thing I struggle with however is focusing on wrist back tends to cause my right elbow not to bend but rather lock in place. It seems like the only way to have both would be via forearm rotation, right? I’ve been hesitant to add that because I was worried it would open the face. What do you think? Thanks much!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hey David! Thanks! Its easier to do when your right shoulder is more externally rotated when you go back....if you internally rotate (flying elbow) you would need more forearm rotation, yes. Hope that helps

This video changed my game completely. I had a spell of months of bad golf. Knowing my club face was open and struggling to correct this. Having my right wrist bent back as much as possible as described in video has me driving straight over 300 yards, irons now with baby draw and hitting 8 iron 160 yards with lovely flight. I was so close to quitting golf. We all say it, but I seriously was selling my clubs. I'm now playing to single figures gross score on most rounds and just love the sport again. Best video I've ever watched.

Amazing that you're talking about that right wrist hinge! Was hitting some drives yesterday and kept pushing the ball and had some weak slices. On my drive back home I started thinking it might be because my right wrist wasn't hinging enough backwards allowing me to stay on plane and approach from the inside of the ball. The videos I took proved that too. Another thing to work on🙂

Another good video to learn from. You really brake down each part of the arm and explain the impacts they can create. This will be good, instead of lifting my arms and hoping, I can try and feel each moment and try to control my arms movements. Only the shot will tell when I play with it. Should be a challenge. I get the feeling this is going to connect my whole arm better to my shoulders. I can see myself rotating my arm as much as I can trying to do a massive draw. Lol. Good video, good explanation. I understood.

Eric I played today at my course and was 2 over par at the turn, two bogies on 8 and 9 due to overstovershooting each green, 2nd 9 was not so good as I started to get greedy in over bowing the wrists, but I have learned from that and will take that on the chin, but let me thank you again for saving my game Eric as I just could not find what I was doing wrong in my back swing till you showed the reasons on you tube, My mates were well impressed with my game, I was amazed at being level par after 7 holes played, just a pity the season has finished, but I won't forget what I have learned from you and I am now doing THE BACK SWING right!

Eric, I just had a lesson detailing a lot of this as an issue… but my instructors thought for me was that I was going too inside via the wrist too early. Most things I’ve seen, at least my amateur interpretation of what is being said, is to set the wrists as early as possible. It’s not so much rotation of the arms that flattens my plane, it’s my wrist starting the momentum in a flat plane. I use the right wrist to keep the left wrist flat at impact. My instructor said, and I agreed with him, that setting that wrist early in the swing made me too handsy looking for a flip of the to mirror the wrist set early in my swing. What are your thoughts of when to set the wrist for someone like me… I was a fairly serious tennis player in my younger days so my natural tendency is to involve the wrist during impact. For reference I’m about an 10-11 handicap when I’m playing a lot.. this year has been sparse time on the range so closer to 13-15 I realize hard to say without seeing my swing… but big point is that it seems like my hinge is creating a swing that is way too flat. By hinge I mean pulling the wrist back on the plane towards my watch if I wore one… not the plane towards the bicep.

Excellent excellent videos Eric, I'm up north of Binghamton ny and thinking about making a trip for a lesson, I have a question I understand the more you hinge your wrist up creates cup at the top, how does cupping of the wrists affect your pivot?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy! Would love to have you! If the "cup" makes the face "open"......than yes. The more OPEN the club face is the more you have to either stall rotation or stand up (early extension) to help square the face The most closed the face the easier to have a good pivot. So if the cup leads to an open face then yes I would expect it to negatively impact your pivot....because you have to to fix the face
@vikingallewahlin6379
@vikingallewahlin6379 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, got a tough one for you today. Most amateurs struggle with shallowing the club during the transition. Why isn't it the norm to swing in a way you can have the shaft on one plane during the whole swing, thereby getting rid of the shallowing part? What's your view on this? Thank you, always reviewing your content :)
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Because when people try to swing on one plan (and have an open clubface or similar issue) they will swing steep because its the only way to hit the ball at a target.

Hey Eric I have enjoyed your videos, you've helped me a lot! Your teaching style is what I can relate to. Backswing depth is something I've thought about for a long time But when you demonstrate back swing positions while standing straight up, out of your golf posture, your arms and club shaft are much flatter in space than when you are in your more bent over posture, they appear more vertical. I'm sure that all of these positions are relative to your shoulder plane, but this can be kind of confusing while watching.. Thanks, Ray

either one... what's important is that you get external coming down kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbGqZZCq05u2YqM.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbCgo9p1rNzMnY0.html I would generally avoid extremes on either side...but it all depends what you match with it (wrist angles, arm rotation, etc) More to the story kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNKCqahm2ZurfGQ.html

Do you advocate (for most people), going from internal rotation of the right humerus, to external rotation during transition?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say I advocate it. It's a move thats done naturally in any throwing motion and most all swinging motions in sports. Definitely can help shallow the downswing and add speed. Not a must do.....but its one way. A good way.

in my swing I have less forearm rotation/ external rotation of the shoulder and I do notice with the longer clubs mostly driver and 3 wood I'm across the line. when I try to actually rotate my forearm a little bit it just feels so unnatural and I feel like I'm really opening the club face. my question is across the line really that bad? I'm happy with my ball striking overall. its just sometimes I'm guilty of trying to fix things just to be more aesthetic on video. however I do notice that Bryson dechambeau is across the line with driver and hes a top pro. thanks for all you do Eric!

LOOOOOTTTSSSS of really good players are across the line. Don't change for the sake of changing, only change if it causes issues in downswing.

Really comprehensive video. One issue not covered is the need to connect the right arm or not. There are videos placing head covers under the right arm or using towels while some instructors promote floating the right arm away from the chest right from the takeaway. Could you come on the lateral movement of the right arm away from the chest- when and how it should happen?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
The way I see it you basically have 2 main options (doesn't matter much how or when to me during backswing) 1. You can keep right arm more connected the whole time during backswing and downswing. This would produce a top of backswing more external rotation of trail shoulder and more lead arm pronation. "laid off" looking. Then it can remain or slightly increase in transition. OR 2. You can disconnect more during backswing like "flying right elbow" a la Jack and Freddy and will produce usually more down the line or across the line look at top...generally speaking. Then you re connect during transition downswing. I've seen both work really well, I dont think there is a black and white answer to when you should disconnect or re connect. Probably easiest for most normal golfers to find a nice middle ground. Not overly connected (for speed purposes) but also not wild at the top.

One other gem that was briefly mentioned. I think at address my wrists are already overly hinged and too low. Have you done any videos how to get the proper wrist position at setup? I think I have to raise my hands up and take out the hinge- is this correct?

You want butt of club in line with belt buckle...hinge or unhinge accordingly to get to that spot

When I was a hacking 14hcp I knew that when I could master right arm only swings /strikes I would have become a good player because at the time I could do good left arm only swings but Im right handed! The key for me having dug it out the dirt is that I rotate in the shoulder/upper arm/elbow but not in the forearm and my hand does the gamechanger hinge that Chris advocates,Hope this makes sense as Im now down to 5hcp and yes I can do good right arm only swings/strikes.

@@CogornoGolf Whilst we are on the subject of arms most pros including yourself lash the **** out of it and their bad shot is a hook.Most golfers starting as an adult male are taught everything But how to lash it! I have ended up with the swing of an LPGA player! Thanks to your left elbow video triggering something in my dense brain I am now beginning to use them like I have done in every other sport Ive been good at. Although I have never hit a baseball I imagine the athletic twirl of the bat they do with their arms as they prepare to lash the **** out of it. If you havnt done one could you think about doing another great video on the arms.

Eric you talk in the backswing about right arm rotation but you rotate only the wrist and the hand and not the arm! The arm rotation I feel should be also the elbow and right under arm. Please let me know what your thoughts !
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
During the backswing you can rotate the upper arm (humerus)....that happens mostly through internal or external rotation. You can rotate the lower arm (forearm) through supination and pronation. You can have a bunch of combinations of these during the backswing... hope that helps, lmk what you want to know

Hey Chris! I don't think you need to eliminate flying right elbow necessarily. Have to match pieces up. I would have to see your swing to give you specific advice. Check out Cogornogolf.com if you can't get it sorted and I'll show you how to fix everything that needs fixing.

I find that I pull my right elbow straight back behind me, which pins my left arm against my body. Since this movement of pulling the right elbow back is not one of your five, should I assume that in no circumstances should you pull the right elbow back behind you in the swing.
