Great video Eric. I totally agree with you. There are a lot of instructors out there saying to let the wrist angle release through impact. I realize this is what actually happens but the more I work on the move you are demonstrating, the better I hit the ball. As you say, best lesson ever.

Thanks, Dave! Exactly. Of course it needs to release.....but if we do it TOO MUCH or TOO EARLY then that doesn't get us anything. Like anything else in the golf swing we usually need to EXAGGERATE to get things done.

Great tip. I have recently heard of the same idea being described as the Right Forearm Flying Wedge that focuses on maintaining the wedge throughout the swing. The wedge being the angle between the right arm and the right wrist extended/cupped not bowed or flexed.

I took your tip beyond the 90 degree arm-shoulder and concentrate on keeping the right wrist cupped until 3/4 follow thru like Tommy Fleetwood. For me, if I try to keep the wrist angle too close to impact at 45 or 90 degrees, I still early release. Since doing the “Tommy Fleetwood Drill”, I consistently hit the ball to the right! Now I have to learn to dial it back, which is a good “problem”. Thanks for putting out these videos!

A variation of this is to have the swing thought of following thru with the back of your lead hand to the target as long as possible. A low handicap friend taught me that after struggling on the front. I switched to that swing thought and only missed 1 fairway on the back and shot 4 over on the back.

Ok I thought I learned great tips before but this is the best! Although it goes against the “keep club shaft as extension of arm” on take back idea, who cares! Snapping the club with wrist on initial take back sets your mind and muscle memory to do the right things on impact. I’ve worked with this a couple days now and he is right about if you do it this way it makes up for other things your body might be doing wrong. Anyways, I’m now hitting the ball great about 80% or the time. For me that’s huge!!! Thanks. I’ll check out your other videos for sure.

Excellent video! While I was practicing this drill, I noticed the more loose my wrists are at impact, the more shaft lean I see on video. Feels as if the lead arm lever is pulling the lead wrist towards the ball, creating the angle you describe. I found I didn’t have to consciously flex my lead forearm muscles. Am I on the right path?
@CogornoGolf

Hey! I cannot say. I have not seen universal "yes" or "no" for being more loose helping. Some people I have seen that help, others worse with than and do better more firm. Ultimately test it and confirm with video...whatever gets the job done!

I discovered this on my own as a beginner. But word of warning in case what happened to me happens to you. I did not understand the rest of the body mechanics of rotation and proper lower body movement nor did I have those skills yet. I found that really exaggerating this could give me cases of horrendous shanks. I got them once so bad I literally couldn't do anything except hit shanks over and over. I'm not saying this will happen to everyone but I've definitely seen others relate similar experiences. It is definitely a great feeling for those searching for more consistent strikes.

Great tip! Ive just headed inside for the winter and the Quad numbers tells me i have a tendency to hit with too little negative angle of attack, thus meaning im hitting to much up on the ball on impact (7i). Hi, first of all love your channel… No doubt people can play with this, but it is terrible for our wrists. That’s why so many are moving to a strong lead hand that works more in a karate chop motion. That creates a flat wrist but in a way that provides inherent stability. When the wrist is flexed, it is a loose bag of bones from a mechanical standpoint. This opens us up to wrist ligament and tendon damage over time. Thanks, Alan

Eric, I’m going to the range to try this, as I have been trying on my own to make this happen...one discovery was to press/push the heel of my RH into my left wrist as I’m about knee height coming into the impact zone...my understanding is that there are no muscles to speak of in the back of the wrist and the initiation has to come from somewhere that is easy to feel... Comment on that?

The left hand grip, to me, is a big player here. Interesting that you came out with this video today as I started looking at this just recently - I'm reviewing fundamentals as my driver has been all over the planet for a while... When I grip it (left hand) like a baseball bat say (think shaft more perpendicular to the left forearm) , then my wrists are _more_ restricted through impact, which makes a flat left wrist harder - like I'm "jamming" myself at the bottom. Then the body has to slide; hands have to manipulate things, etc. Conversely, when the left hand grip is such that the shaft and left forearm are more "inline", then the left wrist flattens, all by itself, through the bottom. It is, to me, a 'weaker' feeling in the hands - until impact, then it's a stronger overall sensation. A good thing. Strange game. Interestingly, this grip feels more restrictive at the top (can't 'cup' as easily) seemingly telling my brain that it has to work differently (better), and not manipulate things with the arms/hands/wrists. Too many things going on for this to be 'magic' but the left wrist feeling you mention happens no other way.

How do you reconcile this move with a throw type release, ie cupping of the left wrist early in the following thru. You’re also suggesting that the left arm comes off the chest in the early follow thru. This is counter to classic teaching that the left arm stays glued to the chest well into the follow through.

Hey Robert! Hopefully you heard the parts where I repeated a bunch of times that THIS IS AN EXAGGERATION and this doesnt really happen this much. Eric great drill. I started a forward press as a swing trigger which has definitely help. Question is - in your “one drill to fix your entire swing” vid you mention during the start of the backswing that the right arm right wrist fully lengthened. In this drill it looks like you cock your arms at the start of the takeaway to create that shaft lean angle. How should we navigate? Great content as always.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mark! Yes-you would need to do different things here with these different drills. Like maybe in school you used to have Spanish class period 2 and then gym period 3 then math period 4. The one drill (float load) has the right wrist fully lengthened in the BACKSWING.... This drill you pre set it because you are pre setting in the DOWNSWING.
@xrayvizhen501

For many of us with this problem, when making a full swing, centripetal force combined with the weight of the clubhead causes the wrists to release too early. So don't you think it's something else that's causing this, probably at the top of the swing during the transition?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I think an early release 90%+ of the time comes from an open club face.... and/or.... too steep (over the top) during the downswing. The early release (trail wrist flexing, lead wrist extending) makes the club face point more LEFT (squares the face) AND shallows out the movement of the club head (angle of attack) Both of those are GOOD things....the problem is it also adds dynamic loft (high/weak shots with no compression) So you want to find a way to both SQUARE and SHALLOW the club head DIFFERENTLY and have that release happen LATER so you get the best of both worlds (square face/shallow club head approach/ low dynamic loft)

Something I never hear from teachers - increasing shaft lean creates a new variable that must repeat to get center-face hits. Increasing the angle shortens reach to the ball at impact. So you have to go/stay down through impact more or you'll top it. If you vary the shaft lean at impact, you vary the shaft reach at impact.

Looks good Eric however you neglect to add when you roll that lead arm to finish. Where do you finish the shot? If I create that move. I will have an open club face. I do have a tendency to start my lead arm roll early in my downswing. Good video, stay safe!

Thats correct....with a stronger grip you dont need to bow as much. Either A) Keep the strong grip and dont bow B) Keep the bow and weaken the grip I talk through the details of all of that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ1naa-q27OagJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bqmXZbJpxtrRiY0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abeBiNyD07i3eok.html

Hey Eric I've been watching your videos for some time and at this point understand that this is an important concept - however the feel that I get (I have a high swing speed) is that I don't have the wrist strength to maintain or increase wrist flexion like this through impact. The force of the club seems to much. Do you recommend exercises for this, or perhaps I'm missing something.

Hey DJ! Of course I would need to see your swing to say specifically what YOU would need to do. If you dont want to flex as much then go with stronger grip style Video on that coming out Thursday kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ1naa-q27OagJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bqmXZbJpxtrRiY0.html

Nicklaus's entry for the 10 BEST putting tips of all time from different people was, "Never listen to a putting tip". He further said, "by the time you try it, it probably isn't working anymore for the guy who gave it to you". Lot's of truth in that one. What I learned the hard way is putting is not a God given talent, it's an acquired skill. And learning that skill is probably the hardest part of golf.

I take lessons and have been working on this. I rehearse and practice all the time with my simulator in my garage. I struggle as soon as I put a ball down and take a full swing. It drives me insane. My practice swing looks really good. Backswing, downswing and post impact. That little white ball messes all of that up. For the life of me I can’t seem to make the positions I practice work once I put the ball down

Love it! If you want more fade you could 1. Open stance line 2. Swing more left and lower in follow through (arms lower and more around) 3. Feel like you hold face more open into follow through (face toward sky) 4. Open face more at setup

I have a problem with chicken wing and one of the fixes for that from one of your other videos is to keep the upper left arm connected against the left side of my chest as I move into the follow thru. In this video, you indicate that the left arm should separate from left side when doing the drill. Should/can I try to exaggerate the bowing of the left wrist as described in this video but modify the drill to keep my left arm tucked into prevent chicken wing and still get the solid contact and distance increase? Please give me your suggestion. Thanks

Any concern about delofting stronger lofted clubs? Probably doesn't help that I have low/mid flight shafts, but hitting down on a 23° 5i with a very bowed wrist just doesn't seem to produce the launch angle I need. My 9i can carry 150 like this, but I start to see comparably diminished returns around 7i.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
100% concern with that. If you ALREADY have very low loft you need to THROW more to give yourself more loft (all else equal with your current swing)

Hi Eric, doesn't this tip come with a caveat to match up that bow with the grip style? A strong grip would not match up well with that position post impact.

Hey Benny! Thats correct. Grip DOES matter. BUT this CAN be done even with a STRONG grip. If you have a STRONG grip and THROW (extend) early.....you better bet you still need to FEEL more bow longer....and that DOES match up. @CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott! Nope! Flexing (bowing) the wrist CLOSES the club face. If you feel like you will slice from here your club face is likely TOO open before hand. Could be grip too weak, too much arm rotation in backswing, cupped wrist, etc.
