Just 12 days before fans and players arrive for the U.S. Open, Pinehurst No. 2 closes to resort guests. We spend the day with Superintendent John Jeffreys, who details all the little things that makes an already difficult Top 100 Course into a test for the best in the world. From its 117 bunkers to lightning-fast crowned greens, Pinehurst No. 2 will pose a challenge for players and an amazing experience for the rest of us, thanks to the work of Pinehurst's grounds team.

As a die hard golf fan who can appreciate architecture/course design/ course prep, hearing a superintendent give this much meticulous detail is simply awesome. He (and staff) genuinely cares so much about the course being as good as it can be! So cool.

I day dream about quitting the corporate rat race and being a greenskeeper. Doing something you love, outside with nature sounds like a dream.

I played it twice back in the 1980s. The first time, it looked like a poorly maintained muni, with patchy grass and shaggy, slow greens. A few years later, under new management, it was transformed. Love the course!

My brother graduated from Penn State's turf management master's school and has been a superintendent for several years. He has been a superintendent at a high end golf course AZ for several years. I can't imagine the stress of getting a US Open n course ready.

I love pinehurst n2 It’s going to be great. Hopefully weather cooperates and the fairways and greens are firm as can be. if it’s dry like last time the one thing I would change from is keeping ‘the stuff’ the wire grasses and what not healthy and lush with hand watering. It was a bit too dry last time for many. Not so much for me but it wouldn’t hurt. Imo.

The stuff is those natural weedy areas off the fairway; as Coore calls it. Last US Open it was super dry and firm and fast which is great but those wire grasses/weed areas were arguably too dry. I’m just saying if it doesn’t rain put some water on those areas. Especially in the landing areas off the tee.

That was the poorest excuse for a golf course I've ever seen. The sand traps needed trimmed, and the rest of the course was indistinguishable from the sand traps. What an embarrassment to the PGA

Payne Stewart was being canceled by ESPN just before his death for racist comments, then that got erased and memory holed. He definitely died at the right time. I'm thankful he didn't have to see what this world has become. He would have enjoyed this setup and these greenskeepers though.

@@andrewengels9107 I am speaking asthetically. Not every course has to look like anything but go back and watch the 1999 Open and then watch the one in 2014. Much more scenic to watch on TV for fans . I have played over a hundred golf courses in my day and I am speaking for myself. My point of view. You are entitled to your opinion. I have mine.

@@andrewengels9107if you’re going back to the 30s & 40s you would shorten the course and have 1/4” greens that roll 6 on a stimpmeter. Donald Ross was brilliant but if he was alive today I don’t think he’d have been to upset with how the course looked or played in 99. Not trying to be rude just pointing out not everyone thinks the same.

This is just such a bad representation of how 99% of superintendents and golf courses work. It makes us look wasteful. And we are never going to bring people into the industry if we keep talking about sacrifices. It doesn't have to be like that. You can operate daily at championship levels at less than 50 hours a week. If you can't, you honestly aren't that good at your job.
