This is precisely what I've been looking for. I'm stuck at 105 driver club grad speed. I've had a few at 107 but that's not a relaxed swing. I'm pretty flexible and athletic so I'm hoping doing this drill will release a bit more speed with less effort. That should result in increased accuracy.

Great drill. I'm a low single figure who sometimes gets caught up in swinging easy which can disengage my lower half. This drill is excellent for sequencing. Your statement on the brain realizing "this won't get it done" and it better engage the big muscles is ABSOLUTELY the case and that's why I feel so positive about this drill.

Pretty sure your rep as a teacher is going to grow pretty fast. There are a lot of big name teachers trying to teach stuff that is contrary to my experience as golfer and athlete. Your ability to explain straightforward approaches to swinging efficiently is way better than most. It shows in the evolution of your swing as well. Great to see your channel growing.

Just used my launch monitor to test this out: 7i went from 80MPH to 86MPH, with a 10-15yard carry increase. Next is to bed this in over the next few months! Amazing!!

Love this video. How to swing faster without just trying to go into a full long drive mode. There are tons of long drive tricks where you can cheat out an extra 5mph. But they result in poor consistency. Focusing on efficiency improvements and staying within yourself is much more valuable. Thanks for this video.

Hello Matt. This drill is tailored to me. Thank you for demonstrating this. I found you on line by pure luck. So glad I did. I watched hundreds of videos of you on a previous channel. Thanks Matt. Great advice. My coach got me to do the short backswing drill for both improved clubhead speed, improved max height, and better contact. Progress is slow, but steady, as I am unwinding 50 years of bad habit.

Wow, I just gave this drill a try and it is exactly what I've been looking for. I needed a drill to create separation. Contact is cleaner and I've gained about 10 yards on the shorter clubs so far, with no extra effort. Thanks a lot Matt!

Matt always been a fan and love the direction of the channel. Used the first drill today before a sim round and felt it was just what I needed. Only about 12 warmup shots and I fired my best round ever (+1) on a very tough track and I left plenty out there with the putter. Also had to club down pretty consistently because I was firing well past my stock yardages following the drill. Amazing will 100% be adding it daily. Thanks Matt

Love it mate! I’m going to try this next time at the range. As a 48yr old I’m working on flexibility & strength this winter. As well as working on creating more clubhead speed in my driver. Right now I’m between 93-98mph, but want to get consistently between 100-105, for that elusive 150mph ball speed. My drives have 195-210 carry, and ideally I want to get it up to 230-240 carry. This drill will help tremendously, I think 👍👍👍

its amazing how that 3:1 ratio is so true and how best results, for me anyways, comes as you get closer to it. I used to have a 5:1 ratio by taking the back swing very slow and come super quick through the ball. If I pulled it back faster and swung faster i would get it to 3:1 range but no control.... 2 years later, I finally figured out to take it back slow in my level of comfort and smoothly accelerate through the ball with a 3/4 swing. That brought me back to 3:1 and will about the same swing speed with driver, for example, of 106MPH. But this video makes me want to practice ramping up my speed back and through in increments and something I can monitor since I set up a basic simulator in my garage with GSpro.

I've gone through different phases of my game where I've utilized each of those drills as my on course swing. The first one I noticed significant improvements with ball striking, consistent distances, and just overall less back pain due to the shorter backswing. Second drill is for those summer months where my body is nice and loose. Ball striking suffered a bit but when I struck it decently, man did it feel good...especially irons. Would you recommend using these drill prior to a round, maybe 10 minutes each, to dial in the swing for the day? I appreciate the detailed explanations and including that one shank so that everyone can know that those happen sometimes when you're trying something new!

Love your content and work as always Matt. Watched this video and your one after about the lead arm. I hadn’t played golf or swung a club since before the holidays out of frustration with my game/swing and the weather. Went to the range and worked on these drills and feels, and I was not expecting to hit it well as I was working on things. Best swings I’ve had all year! 😉Joking aside, I had struggled with a really long swing and losing the club face and path and trying to correct on my downswing and being wildly inconsistent for months. Cutting things down helped me get back to good contact and the feel of a consistent swing! Thanks! 👍🏽

I found that my swing gets too long and when I do this drill that you demonstrate it allows me to get back into my separation and proper sequencing. If I try and get more length swing just falls apart. Lately I am just thinking halfway back with speed and whip back or sling through impact. My lack of flexibility at 55 and wide shoulders and chest I believe keep me from having the fluid feeling that I get with a shorter swing. It feels quick yet fluid if I keep it short hands feel like the never get above the shoulders. This drill is spot on and may help many golfers discover all the points you highlight.

Thanks for the drills Matt. I tried the John Novosel Tour Tempo 3:1 method back in the 2000’s . The theory made sense but didn’t help me, just seemed to stifle the backswing and cause me to rush. I will try using the 2nd drill to focus on increasing backswing speed only and not the 3:1 tempo ratio.

I know 100% I benefit from a faster backswing. I suffer from a chicken wing also but I notice when I swing back faster I do seem to feel like I get more separation and the speed/momentum almost helps me keep my arms in a better position. Feel vs real right. Great video Matt I can’t wait to use this drill.

one thing i learned from the long drivers (Kyle Berkshire, Bryson, Martin Borgmeier) is that fast backswings help produce faster downswings. the reason is two fold. you can take advantage of the inertia of your club and upper body turning backward to keep the club in position longer at the top while your lower body is firing forward. second reason is that you can start ramping the pulling force on the club at the top without moving the club down (pulling on the club while it is still traveling up). in both cases by the time the club starts moving in the down direction, your hands are already applying a high force and have more time to add energy to the club. if you truly paused at the top, it would start coming down the moment you started pulling and you would have less cumulative time to pull on it before the club hits the ball. also, faster backswing does not equal faster tempo. if both your back and downswings are fast, tempo can be exactly the same as before. Kyle Berkshire was 2.85:1 when he won WLDA with 158 club speed and 230bs. just imagine how fast 158 club head speed is and you have to see why the back swing must be fast also, otherwise you easily end up like Hideki with 6.4:1. the second thing i learned is that you don't have to use all the speed increasing techniques when you play golf. you don't even have to use any of them when you play golf. is is good enough that you apply them during regular speed training sessions (practice time), so that when you go back to your own familiar swing, your normal, base effort is actually permanently faster from conditioning. since Hideki was mentioned, i'll just say there is no doubt he could hit it faster if he quickened his tempo to the usual 3:1, but honestly, nobody on tour prizes speed over control...they already have speed from junior golf years and are individually cutting back on certain moves depending on which one makes them feel they can have more control in return. they are usually also freaks in certain aspects to compensate for not doing what is common sense for most amateurs to do (like keeping elbows straight at impact which Speith and Hovland dont do, 3:1 tempo which Hideki doesnt do, keep your heels planted on transition which JT and Morikawa dont do, etc etc etc). Hideki has insane core strength and spinal flexibility to compensate for not doing a faster back swing. judging from hand position he has a very long backswing like Cameron Champ, but can reach his top with both heels planted while Champ has to lift his lead heel. to be able to do that with a 6.4:1 tempo is itself a freak ability. which brings me to another thing i learned from a coach: if you wan't a good efficient swing, don't look at the male tour pros ...look at the LPGA tour pros. if LPGA is outdriving you, it has to be from efficiency and nothing else.

What do you think accounts for speed generation beyond what is achieved from this hip high back swing? I know quite a few golfers who only generate the same speed with a full swing that they generate from a hip high swing. No matter how 'hard' they try they can't generate any additional speed with a longer swing.
